Fisher-Price Doll Reprogrammed by Al-Qaeda
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 11:15 PM on October 8, 2008
The hard-hitting investigative team at MyFox has just discovered the latest and greatest threat to national security and your children: Fisher-Price's Little Mummy Real Loving Baby Cuddle & Coo Doll, which is sold across the country, has apparently been hijacked by Al-Qaeda to reprogram your children into followers of Allah! If you squint your ears, one of the talking doll's catchphrases sounds like "Islam is the light." God-fearin' parents everywhere are horrified, or at least outside of this McDonald's and Pizza Hut. Why hasn't anyone been talking about the surge where we really need it, the heart of Fisher-Price??? [YouTube]

Yes, but this totally fails to take into account our infiltration of 'Fatwah Sally' dolls into the middle east market which are programmed to repeat McCain campaign talking points.

Just curious. How does a positive phrase about Islam equate to being corrupted by Al Qaeda? Kind of offensive to Muslims if you ask me. Nice work there Giz. Maybe if it was saying something like "Osama is the man!" or "Kill the infidels!" this headline would make sense.

@vadubgeek:
You misunderstood the satire.
It's kind of like when the New Yorker had Barak and Michelle Obama on the cover dressed as terrorists. It wasn't saying they are terrorists - it was mocking the ridiculous paranoia and ignorance that causes backwoods hicks to think that they actually are terrorists. So in this case I think Matt's ridiculing the kind of mindset that could not only could hear "Islam Is The Light" in this doll's recording, but would construe that statement as a terrorist threat.

@vadubgeek: It's offensive to anyone NOT of the Islamic faith. What if it said "Satan is great"? The point being, it's a hidden message not intentionally placed there by the creators of the doll, and probably not approved by most parents unless they were aware of the phrase prior to buying it. I agree with vadubgeek, the title is sarcasm...but the real question is, who really did insert the phrase?

obviously it shouldn't be said by a doll, and it's very weird, and it's inappropriate. but it's not offensive unless you're a bigot.

@SpiffySteve: I don't believe it is a fear, but rather a concern that something they may not want to teach their kids is being concealed in a doll without their knowledge. The doll could be programmed to say things like, "murder is ok" or "vote for Obama", or "Satanism is the light" or any number of things that parents don't want their kids to hear. I doubt that most parents have anything against Islam itself. The point is, it shouldn't be there unless the doll was specifically made, advertised, and sold stating what phrases the doll says so that parents can decide whether or not they want their children to hear them.

what kind of news is this? even if the doll says "islam is the light" - where's the hate? would "christianism is the light" mean hate as well? islam = hate? that's dumb and stupid journalism. i really get scared when i see "news" like that as it suggests an opinion but doesn't reflects objective news - you really need to be careful when you watch tv or listen to dependant media.

@lostarchitect: Ok 'Satanism is the light'. See what I did there? It's offensive in the sense that if it isn't your religion, why would you want to hear it. By all means this isn't to say that Islamics don't have the right to believe what they want to believe. It's just that it's offensive to have the phrase concealed in a doll when that doll was not advertised to to say that in the first place.

@SerialPsychosis:
1) Most definately. Would you have heard anything discernable had you not been prompted by the story first?
2) It's not supposed to be saying anything. It's the Cuddles & Coo doll... it's cooing. Just making pre-recorded random noises any baby, islamic or otherwise, might mutter.
Pareidolia is the perfect word for it, or apophenia perhaps. I'll go with ignorance syndrome, sometimes known as redneck-itis.
You know, I gotta ask... how do stories like this get on the air? Did the first lady call Fox and say "OMG, you won't believe what this doll is saying.. meet me at the McDonalds on 4th and Washington!" And Fox said.. "We'll be there in 5!" WTF?!!?!

Okay, wait... all I heard it say was "Islam is the light." That doesn't sound like hate. One of the people said it said, "Satan is King" but that isn't Islam. They believe in God too.
This sounds like the purple Teletubby doll that said, "I like it in my bum" or something or when I went to a Baptist youth group as a kid and was told rock n roll was the work of satan because of the hidden messages when you played it backwards.
In other words, total bullsh*t. Two wrongs don't make a right people. I like the little girl's answer. Take the batteries out and play with the doll. Take the hate out of Islam and play nice with them.

I don't know what it's supposed to be saying, but it definitely isn't saying "islam is the light." The phrase definitely ends with a strong K sound. Listen to it again. It's a K at the end. Mostly likely it is saying something "is alike." Myself and several speech therapists I work with all heard a definite K sound at the end.

So what if it says "Islam is the Light"?
I bet there's got to be at least more than 1 doll or toy from any other religion that doesn't necessarily say aloud a message, but probably has it written on the doll or the box or something like that.
I mean is Islam a bad thing? No, it's just a religion. If it said Judaism, Christianity, or any other religion is the light, why would that be bad? it's basically saying the same thing, but about a different religion.
I don't see how this is a bad thing, and quite frankly, as a follower of Islam myself, I'm a little offended by Fox news. (Who else of all news stations would it be?)
Then again, in another light (meaning perspective, like if I weren't a Muslim), I would be a little angry with Fisher price for not labeling it as a Islam-promoting doll. Other than that, I don't see anything wrong with this doll. Why doesn't Fisher price just make them for all of the religions, label them this time, and sell them to make a ton of money off of highly religous parents?
Problem solved, and fisher price profits = UP!
