DSi Will Peacefully Coexist with the DS Lite on U.S. Store Shelves
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 9:00 AM on October 5, 2008
The recently-announced Nintendo DSi will not, as confirmed by a Nintendo spokesperson, replace the DS Lite in the U.S. Her reasoning? The DS Lite is in half of all Japanese households, but only a fifth of U.S. households. Apparently this kind of whirlwind success actually means there is "huge untapped potential" for the Lite, so Nintendo is going to let the two brothers sit side by side, at least for awhile. [Kotaku]

Yeah, what about some sort of plugin or codec they give us to download with DS-is? that will add Mp3 support. All it is is a codec.

@Jeice: Sorry, that sounded weird.
Nintendo had long stopped production of the original models of the Gameboy Advance. They were still making Gameboy Advance SP at the time of the DS's introduction.
Just wanted to clarify that.

@tenio: I never said the GBA could play DS games. Where did you even get that from?
And I mean all iterations of the GBA. When the DS came out a few stores were still selling both versions of the Gameboy Advance: the original GBA and the SP. Nintendo wasn't producing them anymore, and whatever original models of the GBA that were on shelves were the last of them.

@Jeice:
do you mean the SP?
i'm pretty sure that GBA can't run DS games lol

This wasn't unexpected. They announced the same thing when the first DS came out. Claimed it wouldn't replace the Gameboy Advance. And I will admit, the GBA lasted for quite a while being sold next to the DS.

In other words, they made three fatal mistakes:
1) Alienated the DS owners with exclusive DSi content due to the built in camera.
2) Removed a very important feature (no GBA) without an alternative solution (no GBA attachement)
3) Made its own iteration compete with its former self, making the transition even more painful.

On the other hand. With the GBA SP, it also killed GB and GBC compatibility. So in a way, the DSi killing GBA compatibility makes sense.

IMO this is one of the more foolish devices Nintendo has released next to Virtual Boy. I mean, the DS is still going strong and this thing doesn't seem like a big improvement at all. There was even a camera accessory released for the old DS models not too long ago.
I do wonder though if they boosted the graphics and processor specs on DSi, at least slightly. There's been no mention so far.

So the "huge untapped potential" are either kids or adults that don't have enough money to shell out $130, parents not wanting their children to play games, people with little time on their hands, and people with no interest whatsoever will make up the remaining portion of half of the U.S. That untapped potential will remained untapped, sorry Nintendo.

I just assume get a GBA micro if you really care about the GBA games.

It all depends on pricing. If the DSi is similar in price to the DS, lots of people on the fence about getting a DS will definitely pick this up instead, though the lack of GBA support will burn lots of people.

@Timooo: Correction: It was actually the GB micro that killed GB and GBC compatibility.

I think everyone here is being silly.
The DSi will coexist until the DS supply runs out, then the DSi will take over and no one will care about GBA compatibility anymore. It's true, just wait!

I'm fine with my DSlite. Perfectly fine. So I am assuming that Nintendo will not be making the DSware compatible with the DSlite? If you want DSware you need to get the DSi?
Unless that is they release the DSVision in the US...but that seems off since it's not using the SD card, but a MicroSD inside of a DScart.
I agree that the DSi is like the premium version of the DS family, much like the Xbox has with Arcade (HDDless) and the Pro, Elite. I honestly don't care for the DSi. IMO, it looks cheaper. The lack of glossy screams cheapness. The L/R buttons look less streamlined and the cameras IMO are ugly-tacked on. Especially on the white unit.
And a tad slimmer, but a bit wider? No thanks.

3 MP camera on the front...better than my cell phone.
Bigger screen? Mega plus
SD slot - will replace the need for my supercard DS and CycloDS I have for me and my daughter's lites.
Trust me, this will replace the DS - and it will sell BIG.

@Jeice: okay, i gotcha
I was referring to the fact that DSi can play normal DS games.
And i didn't know they were still making SP when the DS first came out, lol
I understand what you meant in your original comment now and i agree with you! lol

memory card slot = uber homebrew potential.
I VERY EXCITE.
I figger'd the "new" ds would be just a premium SKU. Why discontinue an item that is selling like hotcakes years after its introduction.
It's nintendo. Just like apple they could take a dump in a box and people will buy it. They aren't really competing against themselves.

They said the Game Boy Advance and the original DS would exist side by side on store shelves, as well. These things are said by Nintendo as cautious failsafes in case the new product is rejected (remember, this is the company that released the Virtual Boy, they're probably always on edge with new hardware releases) but are dropped like they'd never actually even be said once the new product starts selling well enough.

bigger screens? so what? are they higher res. too or are they the same old cell phone quality BS. they better be at least 320 x 240 or I wouldnt even consider it. What good is a 3 MP camera when viewing the image on the device looks like it came from a .3 MP camera?
