Disney Sucks the Magic Out of Films With 120 Pages of Blu-Ray Legalese
Posted by John Herrman at 8:30 PM on October 8, 2008
Sleeping Beauty is Disney's first classic animated film to make its way to Blu-ray, and it's loaded with legitimately compelling BD-Live extra features. Format War Central tried to check these out, but got smacked with a 57 page EULA followed by a 63 page Privacy Policy before they could view any of them. Also upsetting: the new ending, in which Princess Aurora, upon waking up from Phillip's kiss resolves to become a copyright lawyer for a large electronics company. [Format War Central]

Does it show up every time you play the disc or is just a one time thing?

@mikecoscia: RTA, it's only when trying to access the BD-Live features. I would hope it's only one time but I suspect unless Disney changes it, it will occur every time there is an update.

@unkpku:
Sure you don't.
Besides, I own your soul.
Do you remember that small shareware program you downloaded the other day? I wrote it. And I wrote its EULA. And by clicking "I Agree" you have renounced the rights to your soul, passing them to the author of the program.
That's so much easier than blood-signed certificate on bull skin. Not as much fun, but so much more efficient!

It's hard to tell from the screenshots, but it looks like it's 120 pages, 8 lines to a page. I'd say it's a standard length EULA/Privacy Policy, they just screwed up on the display/implementation.

I actually really enjoy reading EULAs while the kiddies are anxious to watch the film. I know on many occasions I have modified my approach to media consumption based on the valuable information contained in some of these often overlooked sources or knowledge.
I also enjoy torturing small animals and blister packaged medication.

That's one of the new features of the disk. Is there also a short on the making of the EULA? Can it get any better than this...
I personally am tired of simply signing these things without reading them. How long will it take a company to insert some abusive power in the agreement because they know nobody reads these things. They're kind of like those credit card agreements you have with your card company. Ever read one of those?

Are these things enforceable? Has this been tested in the courts?

there must be enough rules in that eula to make any normal consumer who agrees prosecutable if disney would be in the mood to do so.
why pay for the right to be sued, if you could just take your chances and get the movie from thepiratebay.

All I had to do was click "Continue" on our PS3. It did not require us to "read" or "scroll" the EULA.

What's funny is that the pirates don't have to see that at all.
Only the folks who legitimately paid for it have to sit and deal with this bullshit.
Once again the law-abiding are punished.
Punished by Disney.

Why is sleeping beauty on Blu-ray? Though I did read, here i think, that Disney provides some of the best BDLive content. 120 pages worth i would hope.

@kahri:
Two things:
1. They increased the width of the frame to some aspect ratio that had originally been dreamed of, but never realized, so now you're seeing _more_ image than ever before.
2. Disney has a major hard-on for Blu-Ray, and has been trying to disuade people from buying standard DVDs by stripping a lot of the more traditional DVD bonus features (like commentaries) from the DVD releases and restricting them to Blu-Ray releases. My Pixar DVD collection hates them for this.

Why are they releasing this now? If Prop 8 doesn't pass in California in November, they're just going to have to re-release it with an alternate lesbian ending anyway.
