Dell Inspiron Mini 9, Now Running OS X Leopard
Posted by Mark Wilson at 7:40 AM on October 3, 2008

The first time a mini-notebook is loaded with OS X, like any right of passage, it's a major event. And now the Inspiron Mini 9 has become a man, or at least an honorary Apple fanboy. Loaded with a slipstreamed version of OSX in a manner similar to the MSI Wind, the wireless card, Ethernet and sound didn't work initially but were fixed after the download of a few additional files.
If you've got a Mini 9 you'd like to load OS X onto, hit up the link for, not quite step-by-step instructions, but probably enough to get the job done. [UneasySilence]

@Pwnage: Probably because of Apple's 'It Just Works' mantra. In this case they would really have to damper hardware, which provides a lower consumer experience in respect to their much-touted software.
Regardless, perhaps they feel it would make their product line too cramped or unambiguous?
Either way, I feel they are missing out on a huge chance for profit.

@jopari: Mac would be capitalized since it is technically a trademark.

Okay, for a laptop this size and power, I don't plan on gaming, image processing, or etc.; however, I am most interested in preserving my battery life. Can anyone point me to a website comparing the efficiencies of Ubuntu, OSX, and XP in a laptop as such? I don't see a big benefit of utilizing XP if I am not planning on using a lot of programs that don't function on OSX, and I don't see a huge deal in using OSX if Ubuntu would be faster and more efficient.
I already tried google-ing and just got a lot of fanboy propaganda.

@Metkis: No one is going to do an official comparison with OSX running on non-Apple hardware. Unless you've got the cojones to stick it up to Jobs.

I think that everyone should just email Apple telling them they don't want an Apple netbook, so that they WILL come out with one.

I never said it was running on non-Apple hardware. Last time I checked, both Ubuntu and XP would run on a Macbook. I just don't know if there would be huge discrepancies due to how each handles the hardware.

BUT!!!! does it handle garageband??? Thats the dealbreaker my friends..... If an Inspiron 9 can run Grageband and a MB can't, then Dell, and the hacker win... Please... let me know if it works. I would really like a laugh right about now

@Metkis: Mac OS X wouldn't run nearly as well on a Hackentosh, compared to a real Mac. The power management would be all wacky, too.
The whole reason Macs can get away with that "Everything just works" dealio is because they write all their own drivers.
It's also why they can't really do a release of OS X that works on general hardware without compromising, and why Windows is so crappy - everything done and supported by Apple is done by Apple's developers.
Whereas with Windows, they just make the core then people bolt on support. It gets messy.
