Dealzmodo: Samsung Blu-Ray Player to Hit $149 on Black Friday
Posted by John Herrman at 7:23 PM on October 13, 2008

You might want to hold off on buying a Blu-ray player for a few weeks, because thankfully, finally, seriously, and almost too-latedly, Blu-ray players will soon drop into truly affordable territory. A source close to Ultimate Electronics has told us to expect the Samsung BD-P1500 — usually about $400 — for $149 on this particularly welcome and poignant Black Friday. Ultimate Electronics is a primarily Midwestern chain, but look to be offering this deal in cooperation with Samsung — in other words, it's probably not the only place you'll see stupidly cheap Blu-ray players come November 28th. -Thanks, Carmel and Matt!
AU: Thought this would be interesting to post for you guys, even though I doubt it will translate across the Pacific.

Recently purchased the Sony S350 last week. Then I saw in the paper that when you buy the Samsung P1500 this week, you get the Ultimate Matrix for free.
Of course I go and exchange the S350 for the P1500 to get the deal, but I'm not really impressed with the Samsung player at this point. Even with the latest firmware update, Iron Man still will not play unless I unplug the network cable.
If possible, I'm going to pick up the Matrix on Tuesday, and then exchange back to the S350.

@UnseenLlama: It is true that there seems to be a bug in the latest firmware update (which gives this player BD-Live) but I have to believe that will be fixed soon. Probably even before the black friday sale.
Also, another way to correct this problem is to insert a spare USB flash drive. And for the price you can pick up a 2 or 4 GB flash drive these days, this is a very cheap fix. Just a thought.
I picked up this player back in the spring when it first appeared in Wal-Marts around the country. I have no complaints what-so-ever. Any problem I have had has quickly been fixed with a firmware update. Additionally, Samsung stuck to their word and made the player BD-Live compliant. I love my P1500.

@Kspraydad: My bad then...I DID check on SAMSUNG's own website:
[www.samsung.com]
It states 1.1 but if they've move to Profile 2.0 great news. I've read further on the website and you'll have to add a flash drive to this unit (1gb) to accomplish Profile 2.0 but still a good deal.

What the prices of Blu-ray players are dropping despite the lack of competition from HD-DVD?! Shock horror OMG the world is coming to an end.

@Kspraydad:
The last firmware enabled BD-Live on the player, so it's actually Profile 2.0.....so depending on reviews, I'll be all over this one if it's at that price where I live!!

@MacBandit: Competition is an interesting thing. You could have two satellite radio companies, and their prices never came down an inch. But, you eliminate the competition with Blu-ray and the players keep sliding in price.
That said, your point is well taken. The folks predicting that Blu-ray would never come down in price after HD-DVD died have gotten very silent recently.

@The_Bronze: Anything younger than 30 years that has been filmed for the cinema has a lot more to offer than DVD quality. That is a wild guess.
But cinema film is waaaaaay more detailed than DVD. So, they can be 'redigitized' in HD with a LOT more detail.

I can't wait to hook this up to my Goldstar 13" color screen I got 15 years ago. I got the best RF Modulator Converter from Radio Shack. It's hooked up to the Left Audio - Right Audio - Video Cables, which is hooked up to my Component to A/V Converter which is hooked up to my HDMI to Component Converter. Awesome.

There is still competition. From regular DVD and downloads. Same argument Sirius and XM made that their competition regular radio. They just couldn't afford to lower prices.

Who ever thought they would never come down in price? I still say that if HD-DVD was still around you would have had cheaper players sooner. Especially with the cuts HDDVD was making just before they gave up.

Wow, 150 bucks is a killer price for a BR player. I think that will definitely help get more consumers to consider buying into the format. I've been working with Warner Home Video on some blu-ray projects and know they have a lot of great stuff coming out on Blu-ray (aside from the Dark Knight); it's definitely worth the money.

@The_Bronze:
Every movie ever made (unless you count Blair Witch, Open Water and a few other DV cam movies) has MUCH higher quality than DVD can offer. Motion Picture films now-a-days are scanned at 4k to edit.

Any film ever made that was recorded onto 35mm or 16mm *can* be transferred into high-def. Usually 2k resolution or 4k resolution. Film has actually much more 'resolution' than 1080p, it's measured differently. Even a movie like Casablanca, shot in black and white (which makes no difference to detail) and is 66 years old looks vastly improved than the SD counterpart.

$400? Is this piece from Summer 2007?
Usually $400 in Northwest Territories maybe, but in most North American retailers it's been between $229 to $299 for months and months now.
On Black Friday you'll see players for $99

@Bitstuff: Remember? I still can't bear to stop using my Sony S7700 (with the silding faceplate) because I paid $1000 for it.
Component, but not progressive. Eek, a $29 player does more today.

@The_Bronze: Then you don't understand how movies are shot. They are shot on film which has infinite resolution for all practical purposes, and then a home video transfer is made. If you have an older low-res transfer made for TV and DVD, just go back to the film and do an HD transfer for Blu Ray and HDTV. For example, I just watched the beatifully restored Godfather on Blu-Ray last night. And that was made in 1972.
So every movie ever made pretty much has been shot on film (subtract digital like the newer Star Wars and weird indies like Blair Witch shot on consumer tape equipment) and thus every movie ever made will look gorgeous on Blu-Ray.

@Monty: The issue was not that Blu-ray would never come down in price, but that without the competition from HD DVD, it wouldn't come down as quickly, which it didn't.
There were HD DVD drives for $100 dollars last year. We're finally (hopefully) just getting down to $150 with Blu-ray drives, a full year later. It definitely has had a huge impact on adoption of Hi-Def technologies in general because of it.
