Carcade Transforms Car Window Landscape into Arcade Game
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 11:45 PM on October 8, 2008
Screw green engines and automated driving. This is what I really want: Carcade, a system that captures the window landscape in real time to create gaming stages on the fly. Created by Andreas Nicolas Fischer, Martin Kim Luge and Korbinian Polk--three students at Berlin University of the Arts--Carcade opens the possibility to never-ending gaming, with the potential to shut up kids doing long-distance car travel all over the world. Permanently. And only for that, my friends, these guys should get the Peace Nobel Prize.
Their demo is quite good. They used a webcam connected to a laptop. The program then analyses the video, detecting the outline of the landscape and using it as the terrain for a shoot-em-up kind of game, in which you manoeuvre a spaceship to obtain stars. Best of all, they even implemented a two-player game mode.
It's a lot simpler than the aeroplane racing simulator we covered yesterday, but my guess is that this could be made even more sophisticated by using laser meters to actually detect depth of the landscape and make more complex, multidimensional game stages. [Carcade via OhGizmo!]

Dirt bike! As a kid I would imagine racing a dirt bike along the side of the highway, not I can virtually actually do it :)

Could you attach this to the windshield and have a linear version of frogger?

@Kevin: Espically when your driving while playing at the same time.

Hah, that's pretty cool. It's basically doing what I did in my head half the time while riding in the car as a kid.

Love it! But you definitely need to be driving through, say, not Kansas e.g.

I am suddenly reminded of the greatest driving simulator of all-time -
Desert Bus
You drive a bus from Tucson, AZ to Las Vegas, NV in real time at a maximum speed of 45mph, a feat that would take the player 8 hours of continuous play to complete because the game cannot be paused (real life has no pause button).
The bus contains no passengers and there is no scenery or other cars on the road. The bus veers to the right slightly meaning it is impossible to tape down a button to go do something else and have the game end properly.
If the bus veers off the road it will stall and be towed back to Tucson IN REAL TIME. If you make it to Las Vegas, you score one point. You then have the option to make the return trip to Tucson - for another point (a decision they must make in a few seconds or the game ends).
Players may continue to make trips and score points as long as their endurance holds out. Some players who have completed the trip have also noted that, although the scenery never changes, a bug splats on the windscreen about five hours through the first trip, and on the return trip the light does fade, with differences at dusk, and later a pitch black road where the player is guided only with headlights.
OMG! Ponies!

And if you hop to the driver's side, you got yourself the most realistic driving sim ever, well w/o the simulation part...

What happens when you go past tall trees, telephone poles, and lamp posts? You'd have nowhere to go!
Not that I'm complaining. This looks awesome.

Great, just what we need, more distractions for drivers on the road. Why don't we put this in trains so the engineers can play too?

I remember the days of sitting in the passenger seat of my mom's car and using my finger to jump over cars, utility poles, buildings, etc.
This is a very nice upgrade to that little game.

I used to do the exact same thing! For some reason, a dirt bike make the most sense when it came to imagining somthing driving just off road beside you.
Next version: outside of commercial aircraft. Passengers can dogfight each other outside of the plane on long trips!

I'd wanted to do something like this with glasses years back. FPS wherever you go. Walking through town, blasting the shit out of aliens that jump out from behind that tree down the street from your house. Multiplayer action even? Well, with this, its the start. Can't wait to see more!
Now combine this with that Brain-Wave Reading Head Thingie⢠and we're set!

With the addition of multiple cameras in many new model cars, the different POVs could add a lot of flavor to various game styles. Very clever and original. Although, I certainly hope it gets restricted to back-seat use with headphones... :P
I already find the use of large, video-playing, dash-mounted LCD screens to be questionable in terms of safety. Most drivers are retarded enough without adding to their laundry-list of distractions.
Driving, talking on a cellphone, trying to follow GPS directions, and playing a video game, while Iron Man is playing on the LCD screen... sure, no problem.

@everyxnewxday: Did you not watch the video? The software sees the "obstruction" and determines the best spot to place a "warp" gateway (based on degrees of contrast) tha tyou must navigate your ship through.

Eventually I'm sure it could.... this being a prototype, I'm sure they didn't have the scratch to develop smart-glass with embedded haptic touch sensors and 3D emulation...
But I have no doubt, given the nature of the automobile industry, that someday such things will exist.

I did the same thing as a kid. I pretended a ninja running along on the side of the road, swinging and bouncing off buildings and stuff.
My wife said I was crazy and no one else ever did it, but today, this has proven me right! Woo-hoo!
Now, for someone other than me and RockStar to talk about people decorating their rooms with black trashbags on the wall like wallpaper back in the 80's pre-goth era. It got a mention on the radio in GTA: Vice City. But my wife doesn't remember the fad at all.
