Breakthrough in Holographic Tech Makes 3D Sets 5 to 10 Years Away
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 4:00 PM on October 7, 2008
Holographic television sets may be only a few years off thanks to a new breakthrough in 3D technology. Researchers at the University of Arizona said they had made the first updatable 3D displays with memory, a prerequisite for getting any holographic image to move. With the new technology, displays can now be erased and rewritten in a matter of minutes.
Though that's still far slower than the refresh rate of normal 2D television sets, the researchers said that speeding the frame rate up would be a piece of cake compared to the first breakthrough. They were so confident, they even gave a time peg--five to ten years before the technology would reach the market. That's right, folks! Five to ten years before every wannabe-Luke Skywalker in the world will get to endlessly loop that integral Star Wars scene.

Really? Like Star Wars style volumetric displays? I honestly thought it was a technology that would never become real at this point and Im still skeptical.

How's it gonna take five to ten years for holo TV's to reach the market when cable providers can still only barely cope with HD? And lest we forget, you need 3D CONTENT to display on your 3D TV as well, and nobody's producing anything like that.

@Elliuotatar: Well don't worry, some big corporation will pour a large amount of money in this project and then show it to the world, and we - tech maniacs that have to have everything first - will stick onto it like flies on honey! Just like it happened probably around 400-500 times with other products of big corporations - Apple, Microsoft, Sony, etc.

It has nothing to do with the hologram you hope it will be .. ( the starwars transmitter ) what they speak about are the holograms you find up to now just in pictures. there are some very good once out there but it is still "just" a picture .. same with the video .. we will have a screen which will appear to be a window to a 3D world once the refreshrate is high enough. However ... you will need a screen .. you will not be able to see it from 360` round ... just 150-170` .. so no its not the hologram which floats midair and looks like arnold with a turban projected from this watch .. (total recall) :) there are attempts to really do this by using the focalpoint of a laser ... but its all not as easy as it looks .. for now I wait for the very nice "D-Tank" which will satisfy me and maybe 80% of the world when it comes to real 3D screens ..

Have patents protecting holographics, including tv, until 2018. Whereby others patents grandfathered on the originals will extent my holographics technology another 20 years.
I wouldn't expect to see holographics anytime soon as Sony and others are waiting for my patents to expire but that will not happen.

My question is this: is this 5-10 years thing when we'll have tech capable of a refresh rate of "a matter of minutes" or full motion?

@holoman:
So then are you going to make these TVs? Why horde the tech if you're not going to do anything with it? Sell/license your invention and make bank.
I'm sorry if that sounds rude but so did your comment.

Who said anything about cable providers? The immediate applications for this are obviously as a computer peripheral or for use with a standalone player. 10 years from now, internet bandwidth should be sufficient to handle most, if not all TV broadcasts anyway, why not content for a hologram projector? By the sound of it hologram discs (same name, different tech) aren't far off of the consumer market either, and their 3.9 TB capacity *should* be enough to store feature-length hologram movies.

@fsusmithc2: The point of a small company holding a patent is to wait until a big one forgets about the patent, makes a product kind of similar to your very vague patent, and then sue the fuck out of em to stifle innovation...

i really hope that the first holographic movie is a porno. normally that would be enough for me, but due to the special occassion, i have a more specific request. The film has to be a "parody porno" that specifically makes fun of star wars> it also has to have lots of holograms within the film itself, and as a direct result, has to confuse the hell out of the audience.
