Blackberry App Store Already Has Third Party Competition in BerryStore
Posted by Adrian Covert at 11:00 AM on October 7, 2008
After today's reveal that RIM will launch an official app store in the near future, TechCrunch reports on BerryStore, which not only promises to provide apps for the Storm, but the rest of the Blackberry line as well, including the old phones. What makes this a legitimate challenger to the official app store is that BerryStore's content will be available to everyone, regardless of the carrier (the official app store will make different apps available to different carriers...apparently).
Currently, the selection in BerryStore is thin, consisting mostly of location based services, Google related apps and bookmark icons for news services, but they're accepting submissions for more apps. The service also plans to incorporate paid apps in the future, though everything available now is free. BerryStore uses a standalone client on the Blackberry to search and browse apps, then connects to the Blackberry browser when its time to download. BerryStore is available now. This is just about convenience because BlackBerries don't need a "store" to be able to download apps...so if a carrier doesn't have it in the store then just go to the website that hosts the app and download it there.

Hmm..
Apple promotes a touch screen phone. Other companies start to make their own type of touch screen phone and promote them. Apple makes the App Store. Now others have begun to make their own.
Other companies create copy and paste for their phones. Apple denies this reality and substitutes their own.

I'm gonna be honest here -- Android has a sick app store -- being open and what not, but I've gotta give apple credit, the amount of time they invest in making sure that all apps are worth my time/money is laudable

exactly...if the phone companies themselves filter what is in an app store, people are just going to make a blackmarket store...they should all be open like androids

This is good. Hopefully we'll see some quality applications in there.

I have no problems with app stores, however, i do have problems if the only way you can install an app is if you got it from the store.
If i find a third party app for a device, i want to be able to download it, drag and drop it to my phones memory, then install it.
But i believe this is how things are going to work out. these companies will follow apples greedy path and try to squeeze every drop out of the consumer. "if we dont have it, you dont need it"

Crackberry.com also has a store application for blackberry apps.
"The easiest way to get to the Crackberry Mobile App Store on your BlackBerry is to visit [crackberry.com] and install our App Store launcher. You can also visit [software.crackberry.com] on your BlackBerry's browser."
