Apple Ships New, Un-Shocky USB Power Adapters
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 1:25 PM on October 7, 2008
Less than a month after Apple initiated the recall process for its USB iPhone power adapters, customers are reporting that their replacements have been received. The original adapters had metal prongs that could break off and remain in a power outlet, which carried an electric shock risk. The new one looks exactly the same as its predecessor, except it's bedaubed with an extra green dot. [TUAW]

Does anyone have an official tally of all the problems the iPhone has had so far?

@ikaka: Nope. The address label that you can rip off the package says they'll charge you $29 if you don't return the old charger.

I just got mine too. But it came in a HUGE box!
I thought that the box was going to be smaller, but I guess I was wrong lol.

So all it needed was a green dot to make it more structurally stable? Now that's innovation!

@Elaine Chow: Also the new one's prongs are tapered slightly on the end.

@jozen: Can't go off of that either. Even though the software is basicly the same from model to model for WinMo and RIM devices, there's still the little problem that their software is spread out onto all kinds of different phones, which are all built differently hardware-wise. Therefore, sometimes its not always a "one-fixes-it-all" type problem. However, with an iPhone, Apple only has to worry about two different models, therefore speeding up the patching process dramatically.

Got mine today too. The letter included in the box with the new power adapter says that if you don't return the old one you'll be charged $29.

"The original adapters had metal prongs that could break off and remain in a power outlet..."
Seriously, this is the first time I read about something as badly done. Where does the quality reputation of Apple come from ?

I think the green dot is there just as a marker to identify the replacement@Alex7575:

I found a recalled adapter in a hotel room. Got it replaced the same day I bought an iPhone, so now I have 2 adapters, without the risk of creating an iPhone flambé. Happy, I has it :-)

I was going to buy one cause theres no way my iPod Touch is gonna strive on one charge on a 8 hour drive to Utah from Colorado for the weekend. Looked at them, crapped my pans at the price, and bought a dual USB charger at Wal-mart for $14

Moderation: they could just stop being cheap and give you a charger AND a usb cable...
...wait...
...we would then have people complaining that Apple would have to change the beautiful design of their boxes to accommodate the change.
Silly me.

Has anyone had a MacBook two-prong charger adapter break in a similar fashion? I was in a Biology lab when the adapter split at the seams, leaving the prongs and the white plastic housing in the outlet. I kinda zapped myself trying to get it out. Took it to the Apple Store for a replacement, and the guy told me that if it happened again he'd charge me $8.

@SomeoneUKno:
Sure, if by "speeding up the patching process" you mean taking two steps forward with bug fixes, two steps back by breaking apps/features, and continually side-stepping all the basic features users have been demanding for the past 16 months.

@SMSDHubbard: That would depend on whether the damage was the fault (prongs breaking off) or something else. If it's the latter you're on your own.

still didn't get mine, probably will get it today... I would keep my original but some people say you'll be charged $29 and I don't really need the second one anyways...

So has anyone actually seen an example of this defect? Thus far, I've found one photo and one complaint (presumably from different people) about this problem. Anyone else?

I actually do want to keep my old one too because for SOME reason almost every other charger that I use tricks my phone into thinking it's completely dead and then turns it off after a while. Anyone else have this problem?

That's the equivalent of saying that you shouldn't play your Xbox 360 for too long..."of course it will overheat and break if you play it for 1 hour! Duh?"
...they could just make it so it doesn't break...ya know, like 98.7777975% of the chargers on the market.

The only reason this would be a problem is if you don't pull the plug straight out and bend it while pulling. Just pull it out straight and the thing won't break off. Duh?

@newtype2011: Why would you need an extra USB cable? Or better, why should Apple have to give you an extra USB cable? You're getting a free replacement of a defective part.
And last I checked, retail USB adapters ship with a USB 30-pin cable as well.

Hmm... Green Dot usually indicates "hospital grade plug". If you work in a hospital check out the medical equipment they have a green dot on all the plugs. Of course this is apple so form over function: meaning somebody probably thought it was cute not that they made a better plug.
