Apple MacBook 2008 Event: All the Information You Need to Know
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 10:40 AM on October 11, 2008
New MacBooks, MacBook Pros, and probably an updated MacBook Air are coming up next week, at the Apple MacBook 2008 event. The MacBook and MacBook Pro are long due for a case redesign but, beyond that, little is known for sure. Here we have collected all the pieces of information we have about them. All the facts, the logical rumours, and the crazy ones, which we will keep updating through the coming days until the MacBook Event liveblog kicks off.
The facts
• There's an Apple event on October 14 and we will be there to liveblog the pants out of it.
• Long overdue, a new MacBook line will be unveiled, with newly-designed MacBooks and MacBook Pros.
• Remember that Apple told resellers not to stock MacBooks or iPods (this was just before the Let's Rock announcement).
The logical and probable rumours
• The MacBook Air, being a recent design, will probably get a features bump, but not a redesign. This could to be supported by price cuts during the summer.
• Despite the pretty mock ups, the MacBook and the MacBook Pro will probably look like the MacBook Air, but on a different scale. In previous generations, there was always a new model that introduced a new look, then the rest followed up.
• Several images of the base top, the base bottom and the display frame of the MacBook Pro have surfaced. It is still not clear if these images are real or not, even while they do look real indeed.
• Some people alleged that these images show a shell carved out of a single piece of aluminum, using a new and revolutionary manufacturing process code-named "Brick".
• However, there are several reasons to believe this may not be the case, starting with an Apple patent detailing a new welding process. However, both manufacturing techniques may have been combined for this product.
• The MacBook in the teaser invitation may be the 13-inch model. Assuming the Apple logo is the same size as before, that is. They have changed its size before.
• Following Apple's commitment for greener computers, all displays in the upcoming MacBook line may be LED-based.
Crazy rumours and wishful thinking
• The usual blurry MacBook spyshots have appeared, all of them demonstrated to be fake.
• The glass iPhone trackpads are most probably just that, fake.
• Some crazy people really wish to see a touch notebook.
• There's even more crazy people that think that a semi-transparent MacBook Pro may appear, based on an Apple patent.
• Some really really crazy people have been dreaming about tablet Macs since 2007 and before.

The best rumor is the one about price cuts. If the macbook line starts at $800 instead of $1099, that rocks. And it would probably still be an upgrade over today's $1099 model. Toss in the possibility of dedicated 3d graphics, and the $350 in Apple gift cards I have been hoarding.... world domination!

@1967CamaroSS: Usually manufacturers will shape the billet so that there is minimal waste and need to recycle by melting it down. It would still be more expensive, I think, but not as astronomically high as you might think.

@1967CamaroSS:
yes, yes i have. i have been waiting for someone to bring up the waste and machining expense of making a case out of billet. as far as i know, you would have to mill out the center of the case. now, you could have the blank forged to have the pocket 90% cleared, but the time to finish it would be pretty heavy, and cutting all the outer holes even with a water jet would be a programming challenge. i would even venture that a laser would be hard pressed to keep the tolerances you need for mass production.

My guess: the picture on the Oct. 14 '08 invitation, it's not a laptop but the back of a multitouch tablet. Brick means 3 things: the tablet weighs as much as a brick, the manufacturing process only took one wide brick of aluminum and a tablet is essentially a wide brick. It'll be called Mac Touch and will replace the Mac Mini, the Apple TV and the MacBook and MacBook Pro.
It will have a: 7"-10" LCD, next gen CPU, non-desktop hardisk (tiny) and next gen GPU, will introduce a new typing method on the virtual keyboard, will have all the iPhone feature except the cellphone feature (two uniquely designed speakers, iPhone batteries grouped together), will make way for desktop apps to be downloaded to App Store (compatible with both desktop apps and iPhone apps), will also be a controller for other equipments with partnership (including house security, Macs and vehicles), will have biometrics for security (not a palm scan but a face recognition), optional iPhone piggyback adapter for cellphone function and mobile internet (3rd party for other phones to follow).
This MacTouch is essentially a bigger iPhone; having some of its parts from the LCD, to the camera, to the battery without the cell features. It will also be able to detech more than 5 multitouches. It is targetted for the house, as Microsoft surface competitor, as an Eee PC competitor and is meant for one hand computing (the new typing method will make it as fast as typing with two hands) that will replace the clamshell design for laptops, netbooks and the like but typing with two hands is optional. It is also meant to replace the mouse, stylus and keyboard combo. The MacTouch Pro (will replace the MacBook Pro) will have the MacTouch features but with pressure sensitivity. The multitouch design will also make way for different GUI (current GUIs are designed for the mouse/keyboard/stylus combo and is limited to one at a time system) which, for gradual transition, will start to evolve after Snow Leopard then come OS 10.8 (two years after Snow Leopard) to OS 11, it'll be completely different, no more Dock or Menus/limited menus (like what you've seen in Jeff Hahn's system). For the most part icons (which is actually a command in picture without the menu hierarchies) and gestures will be the new menu and commands.
MacBook Touch haptic to follow that will make it accessible for the disabled and for the rest to be able to do things better without looking, if you're using it as a controller for your Mac and other equipments for example. The Pro version will of course be a little bigger (10" at most) and more powerful. The screen size in years to come will not change- these are essentially meant to be light and portable, 17" laptops proved to be too big.
Apple just says notebook but because a notebook should literally be like a notebook which you use with one hand to hold and write. It did say months ago that there are really innovative things to come, it won't be innovative if it's another clamshell design which Apple is trying to get rid off and instead is shifting the way we interact with gadgets through the flexibility of a multitouch (by multitouch it means 5 or more detection) screen which the iPhone started.

-Macbook and Pro line keeping their names
-Macbook getting an aluminum interior, white/black (customer's choice) plastic exterior. Staying with Core 2 Duo, up to 4GB of RAM. Possible SSD option.
-Macbook Pro becoming one piece of aluminum. Removable back to easily replace hard drive (possible graphic card slot also). Comes in regular and black aluminum. Still 1" thin. Option to upgrade to a Intel Quad core, and up to 6GB of RAM. nVidia graphics will be the higher mobile 9 series. Possible SSD option.

the iPhone is the mac tablet. the next version of the iphone will have a better screen resolution, and maybe will be a little bigger, gradually it will be more powerfull and do what a laptop can do.
Why create a phone-less tablet and then merge their tablet line with the iphone line ( after some time ) , it makes more logic to evolve the iphone gradually

My Guess Follow up: Hi. More clues that it'll be a multitouch tablet. The Apple Ad says: The spotlight turns to notebooks. But why would Apple make it obvious that's it's a really small notebook or a netbook- that would affect the interest of attendees a bit coz' there's nothing innovative about a small clamshell notebook form factor with faster/efficient things; other companies had done it. The ad could have just said, spotlight on netbook or cloudbook. Notebook form factor is something you generally use with one hand which to do things quickly with one hand in the current GUI we have is to use multitouch (at such a small screen your fingers will be able to click faster compared to a trackpad if the pointer has to go from the Dock to the menu for example).
Last clue is the price. If you take away the bottom part of a MacBook and just cram everything using iPhone/iPod Touch parts to the screen part (giving you a tablet form faster), add the iPhone/iPod Touch features and make the screen smaller than the MacBook at Eee PC screen size, add a slim blu-ray drive then the sub 1000 dollar is possible- it also saves a lot of materials especially the aluminum. It makes no sense that it's a thinner MacBook (the Air version) coz' Apple usually will price it the same as the last offering of the Mac model it upgraded which would be more than 1000 dollars. Also if you calculate the price of the iPod Touch into 4 you'd get around 916 dollars which is still 1000 dollars. Come to think of it the screen size of the iPod Touch is 3.5 diagonal if multiplied by two = 7" (since you need two more to form a rectangle the MacTouch's screen would be equal to four iPod Touch/iPhone screen). But this is only good for the MacTouch's screen size, it doesn't have to have four of every part of the iPodTouch/iPhone (though it could if it's offering higher models, two to four hardisk for backup or two to four batteries grouped). Since the base model could have just one next gen CPU and GPU, it could bring the price equivalent to only to 2 iPod Touch at around 399 to 459 dollars (or 499 knowing Apple's pricing strategy).

Apple's going to need to bring the specs up on their MBP to get to Dell's level these days. They're getting left in the dust. I'd hope they'll bump them up to match the Dell M6400:
Quad core extreme edition processor w/ 12 meg cache
1920x1200 LED screen (like the MBP)
16 gigs of ram
RAID 1 Solid State Drives
Quadro FX 3700 with a gig of ram
Built in GPS and mobile Broadband
8-in-1 card reader; ExpressCard 54; PC Card
2mp webcam with stereo mics
fingerprint reader
shuttle touchpad
backlit keyboard (like Mac's)
I took shipment of one today, same specs, but with 4 gigs of ram
Sure it weighs a ton, but when it comes to doing 3d and CAD work, it runs circles around anything Apple offers (other than the Mac Pro), using 1/2 the energy. Pretty impressive stuff. That's what I expect Apple to release.

its just going to be a new keyboard like the macbook and better guts, and some little things, just like all the other upgrades, from the transparent keyboard to titanium then to aluminum and 3 different sizes (12,15,17), etc. etc. so lets not get exited, there is not going to be a big differences unless its a totally new family but then again they like to keep it to a minimum, no more than 3 similar things, ipod touch- iphone, ipod nano- classic, macbook- pro- air, imac 20- 24 inches, so there.

That's why with Apple products you ALWAYS have to keep an ear to the rumors. We heard back in late July and early August that resellers were stocking up on current MacBooks and MacBook Pros. This is generally what they do before a new release is expected.
This combined with a lot of the other rumors was too much for me to dive in and by a new one. And we'll see what they release. If I'm totally thrilled with the new one, I'll buy it. If the older one is enough for me, then I'll be able to save some cash.
Apple used to have a price break for people who purchase "old" models 30 or 60 days before the release of a "new" model. Not sure if they do this or not, but would be worth looking into - could soften the blow a bit if you save a few bucks with your purchase...

That being said, if you just bought it last week, at a retail store, you should be able to take it back if it's still in perfect condition, once the new one is released. Apple stores that are nice usually allow 2 weeks if a new product comes out and you want to trade.

well i think it's saft to say that the Macbook Air will get a hardive boost, remember the 240gb 1.8" HDD's that came our after the last apple event.
My guess would be that the whole macbook family will switch to 1.8" HDD's and SSD's as a setup option, with 2.5" if wanted for 250gb+. Claiming that it's 'Greener' to use the 1.8" but if you need more space you can have it in a un-green 2.5" retrofit
Multitouch tracker pads on the whole family but not in glass
MB/MBP will get a makeover to look like fat versions of the air
Backlit LCD screens and maybe keyboard aswell
New graphic card
Wishfull thinking: Blu-Ray drive, better battery, glass track pad, webcam upgrade, speaker upgrade, touch screen or 7"-10" Touch-netbook.

Why would a tablet mac have a glowing apple on the back ?
Where would you set it ? it would have rubber feet on the bottom like the base of a notebook.
Also how would a tablet mac replace the mac mini, apple tv and MB(P)? It would be a new product and would certainly not replace a mac mini or an apple tv.
This is basically a description of what happened in your head after you last masterbated over your iphone

So - I hadn't really thought about this form factor as a possibility before, but maybe....
What's to hate about a touchscreen Apple netbook with CPU/GPU, SSD, and motherboard behind the screen so that the screen is detachable to act as a tablet?
I'm not talking about a wireless touchscreen; I'm talking about a tablet that docks into a netbook. The lower half "dock" is a backup battery, keyboard and multitouch trackpad, an HDD (for backup and for large media storage), a disc drive (CD/DVD/BluR), and a plethora of extra ports. The tablet could charge from the base or through an additional charging port. Naturally, the tablet could function in landscape or portrait mode when detached.
This would incorporate/allow for concepts like this patent: [www.macnn.com] as well as providing a real workable tablet. Students could carry just the tablet part to class for taking notes (a stylus probably wouldn't be necessary if Apple used concepts from this patent: [www.engadget.com]), but if they needed to write a research paper they could snap the tablet into the base, fold it up, and carry it to the library like an ordinary (albeit touchscreen) netbook.
SSD and touchscreens are both pretty expensive, but not prohibitively so. With this setup, you are looking at an Apple Tablet (every Apple geek's nerdgasm) with full notebook capability. Priced sub-$1000, these things would sell like mad. Applications for students, graphic designers, audio/video editing, and business.
What's not to love?

I, for one, could care less about rumors (Apple or otherwise), but I'm grateful for this idea of centralizing all related rumors onto one page. Keep it up!
