Apple Fixes iTunes HDTV, Genius Problems With 8.0.1 Release
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 12:55 PM on October 3, 2008
In case you haven't opened up your iTunes in the last few hours, Apple's released v.8.0.1 to fix several 8.0.0 issues with HDTV episodes, the Genius auto-playlist feature and software update checks. For instance, iTunes will no longer accidentally overwrite HD versions of your TV episodes with their standard definition copies. Performance and stability have also supposedly been improved. Check it out and tell us what you think. [Apple Insider]

Is anyone else having issues dragging songs to a playlist? I can only right click and send.

WHAT?!? You mean Apple released ANOTHER update? I have to enter my password again for an UPDATE? Jesus, I should just kill myself and avoid all these troubles! I wish it would be more like Windows and just install itself already without my knowledge or permission!

Does Apple have a QA department?

@Dudemeister on the Run: Why and how do you connect your LAPTOP to iTunes?

Ya see, this is what I hate about my iPod. If you don't have iTunes to put music on, you're pretty much screwed with anything that can't run Rockbox. Someone make a affordable iriver with a decent amount of storage dammit

Well I am glad that Apple finally released an update officially that fixes the Vista BSOD issues when plugging in the iPhone.
The thing that sucks the most though is that for me the app store only had two good functions. Finding new apps to play with and then installing them. Apart from that I couldn't care less about music and video. Since last weekend Apple removed the ability to find new apps from the categories section of the app store.
I have to say; The App Store New Apps feature was always a bit broken, but broken or not it was the only way to get at a glance, all new apps. Unfortunately Apples has no idea how to manage large scale caching and it was systemicaly broken a lot, where apps would constantly show up on two or more consecutive pages because of their poor page caching system, but hey, regardless, it still put all the most recent apps in one place. For me it was the most useful feature in the entire itunes application and its now gone. Yes you can use Browse, or enter each category individually, however using Browse does now work with the Entertainment section at all right now, and ALL the data caches seem to be old for every other section.
For a Flagship part of the itunes application it sure seems that the app store is really the poor cousin.
Its actually become easier now to use a non apple sanctioned RSS feed to find the new applications and search for them by name because the chances of them showing up in the browse search seems to be pretty close to zero (and I did that today I found two apps I wanted to buy in an RSS feed and sure enough they still have not shown up in the store pages but you can find them by name and buy them).
The thing that surprises me the most is that developers are not up rising over this because essentially there is no real way to find new apps as they get published.

an update like 8.0.1 infers small fixes. updates are supposed to be small. instead i have to download the whole freakin 74mb installer and let it run its magic. this better be worth it

@OletheaEurystheus: Im a developer. Im aware of the processes.
Good QA development teams assure your project goes into UAT without issues. What they can never seem to discover is if your program will have issues years down the road when great amounts of data has been accumulated on the various aging systems. They always miss that.
Either way, after reading some of the comments below, i think that answered my question.

Genius is not so Genius. Its still saying when I click on a song that I don't have a song in the Genius area when I do. So its still the unGenius feature.

@Mike918: It kills me. You have to A) type something and then B) click a button. Do people not read what they type between point A and point B?

@ompwebdude: It's driving me crazy, too. Every morning, I'd check for new apps. Now I can't. As a result, I'm not buying many apps. Smart move, Apple!

I updated iTunes today and it asked me to reboot. I now get a message about some dll needing to be replaced and I never get the login screen, just a button to restart.
Going to have to try restoring the original dll later today so that I can get back into my computer.

@8026mn: That's because the purpose of iTMS/iTunes is to get you to buy crap. I hear you.
iTunes 8 dropped at the same time as Zune 3. Whereas the Genius Sidebar recommends that you rebuy music you already own, the Zune Marketplace tells you if a song is in your collection by changing the BUY button to an IN COLLECTION button.
The Genius Sidebar could have been so much more. Perhaps an algorithm that detects the percentage of an artist's albums owned. If someone has 8 out of 10 of an artist's albums, they probably wouldn't buy a greatest hits album (why buy what you already own?)
It is possible. Zune makes note of the proportions of music by specific artists and marks them as Top Artists. Unfortunately, this has been a problem for Apple for years. The Mini Store had the same problem. The "Just For You" feature also had the same problem. I tried the JFY feature for about 5 minutes until I got fed up with having to tell the iTunes what I already own.
The bottom line is that if iTunes can match a ripped album to iTunes artwork, the same system can and should be used to communicate better recommendations. It's lazy programming. My iTunes library is a database with data from a central source. I don't understand why Apple can't get its act together.
OMG! Ponies!

@Kaiser-Machead's LEGO WALL-E: Hyuk yeah @madog: Really? So your big bad difference between Apple and Microsoft is just that MS does it automagically? FAIL. Hey look everyone! Turns out both companies churn out crappy software that requires updates. One just does it without permission (unless you change the setting, but that's for advanced users. Like madog. Or wait.).
