Apple Announces MacBook Event For October 14
Posted by Jason Chen at 2:10 AM on October 10, 2008

Apple's just sent out invites for the October 14 MacBook event being held in Cupertino at Apple's headquarters. How do we know it's about MacBook? Well, take a look at the image. The fun starts 10:00 AM, PST. We'll see you there early that morning for our usual entertaining pre-game commentary before the actual Liveblog starts. Looks like we'll get to see which one of those MacBook "brick" rumours will be coming true. We're hoping for the one where Steve Jobs gives all attendees a new car.

@Phenostar: Historically, stock jumps when they announce anything and then in a day or 2 it drops. So get in now, while it's slowly recovering and then cash in on the announcement bump.

So now MacBooks will be in aluminum? and also more expensive maybe?
MacBook tablet with no keyboard (ie a huge iPhone with full OSX) or they are not getting one penny of my money. release the tablet and I'll pay up to $3000 for it.
that is all

@DrewGradesPoo: I'm sort of curious what the need for a tablet mac other than just the "neat" factor.
I would be happy if they just come out with an extremely affordable (sub $1000) laptop for average consumers. It's what Apple needs to continue to pickup ground on the laptop market.
You're right though. It's probably going to be something lame, like announcing that it is the "fastest and greenest" computer in the world.

Unfortunately I put a fist through the keyboard and topcase of my 12" powerbook the day before, so it wasn't exactly something I had time to ponder over.

I'm pretty excited about the "all aluminum" MB/MBP case, should make a pretty stiff laptop (which is a good thing). Curious if it will effect price. Personally, I never thought MB's/MBP's suffered from being too flimsy. But hay, if it doesn't raise prices, who cares. Though, I'm curious if this sort of manufacturing will effect Apple's environmental rating. It may be that this sort of manufacturing process requires more resources, and if there's no actually benefit, I may be turned-off a little.
... I wonder how this case will react to exploding batteries. Will it maintain structural integrity, pop out the bottom, or send molten "magma" ...I mean aluminum spraying all over the place.

@donlphi:
A tablet is good for a few reasons...
Less bulk. Any space that would be used for a mechanical keyboard can be either used for other things, or eliminated.
A solid design with no moving parts is inherently more durable.
Fullscreen multitouch would provide near limitless variation for input. The iPhone has demonstrated this, and with the size advantage, a tablet would be even easier to use.
I full well admit that if you do a great deal of typing, a standard keyboard is the preferred tool, but how many people are typing like novel-crunching monkeys on those netbooks? Few. Most people are only doing serious typing while at work or home, when portability isn't an issue. In fact, as many keyboards are moving to wireless format, it would seem to me a good idea to use the same wireless keyboard for your home machine and tablet whilst at home. Then simply use a virtual keyboard on the tablet for typing on the go.

@FlashSandbox: Usually people are disappointed that they didn't announce the PowerBook G5, or something. Since the iPhone (and intel switch), the rumors have typically overshadowed/over-hyped the actual products that come out. Thus stock goes down (tumbles, takes a hit, drops) after (most) announcements (Google it).

The aspect ratio isn't really unusual. It's roughly 14:10 which nicely accommodates a 16:10 display with some extra bezel for the iSight above it. Nothing new here folks.
What I'm really waiting for is a tablet Mac that's much bigger than the iPhone, but still narrow enough to fit in one hand. A unit 4 inches wide by 7.5 inches tall (roughly the size of the Newton 2100, but much thinner and lighter) could (with a small increase in pixel density) accommodate a 540x960 display that would be great for all the tall narrow content in our lives (documents, web) and, when turned on its side, be a perfect 16:9 display for movie viewing.

@mferrari: What does this have to do at all with the apple event?
Last week's holiday is the Jewish New Year, which isn't any different from you celebrating the roman calendar's new year. Or, say, the Chinese New Year where factories in china shut down for a few weeks.
Today's holiday is Yom Kippur which is the Day of Atonement. You know, where you apologize for your transgressions towards people. Such a terrible holiday to have! In fact most Christian religions ignore this holiday even though their faith is built upon the religion of Judaism. Even Jesus celebrated this holiday.
Quite a few Jewish owned businesses are in fact open on Christmas day. So, I'm pretty sure much of it evens out.
Hell, even Ash Wednesday is really Passover. "The last supper" is a passover dinner.

I'm not sure if I would want an extra button or not. For what I do (graphic design), one button and two-fingers works for me.
But when it comes to gaming, and when I don't have a mouse to rely on, its..a..paaaain to two-finger-click. When I'm playing F.E.A.R, and when I want to right-click, it detects my two fingers and scrolls through my weapons >.< bleeeeeh

@cynu414: exactly, i live in beirut and if i had the money i would do the impossible to see an actual apple event,
at least before his steveness leave the throne.
apple products are a real commodity here, $3700 for my first gen 17" mbp, but got lucky with my iphone, a friend visited the 5th avenue store, i actually still have that lovely bag :)
black market 3g cost $1200, 2g $700

@DrewGradesPoo: I have a Gateway convertible tablet and I was sick of it after about two months. I used the tablet feature at first, for sketching and doing crossword puzzles, mostly, but once the novelty wore off I realized that, for my purposes, it was a complete waste. Of course tablets are practical for some people, but I found that they really aren't as cool as you might expect. I'm planning on ditching it for my first MacBook at Christmas.

@Brawndo: I was told by a person that has direct ties with Apple (the company he works for works for Apple). He has been correct on other things so I am thinking this is the case now. He suggested it would be a larger trackpad with multi touch. Also cheaper!!! Now if it is aluminum I think I will skip the MBP and go with the new MB...

I'd love to see the current model with quad core and support for 8gb memory, that'd get me to ignore the current sales going on (though $899 isn't tempting enough for a macbook, $699 is :P)

Finally and good timing too. My customers finally paid all the invoices I sent them so there is money in the bank.
My old machine is a G4 666Mhz powerbook. Not exactly a speed demon. Even simple flash menus give it a headache.
I am hoping these new models will accept larger amounts of memory than the current macbooks. Something tells me that 4GB will not cut it in about 2 years and I plan to keep the new book for longer than that.
Predictions:
Notebooks will not contain any revolutionary features, just more of the same. Think macbook air trackpad and screen technology with traditional laptop array of ports and storage. The pro will get core2 quad core processors, the regular model will get dual core. The quad core pro laptop will be the only really new thing. The technology will be scaled down from the recent 6 core xeon where all cores are on a single die instead of 2 dual core dies in the same package like current quad core desktop chips.
The case design that has been leaked doesn't really look like a big design change from the outside. These laptops will still look similar to macbook pro models you buy today. The regular macbook getting a metal case is new but not radical.
Chipset support I don't have any insights on that. Probably an existing chipset with tweaks for the new processor on the Pro.
Video Rumours are Nvidia chips. Again a tweak of something that is already released for the Pro. The regular macbook will be integrated graphics again. (PM45 chipset)
Memory: DDR3, Hopefully the chipsets allow for large module sizes to reach 8GB on regular and 16GB on pro models for the maximum supported size.

These macbooks are gonna look really cool, you can just tell... As for the tablets, i would definitely buy, the only thing is i would also buy a wireless keyboard and mouse to go with it because it can get very annoying just using the touch screen... but if you've seen the HP tablet PC then i guess thats what we can be excepting from the macbook tablet.

Let's look a the changes in the marketplace and most users consumption of computing resources. Firstly, there is a trend toward smaller, lighter, and cheaper netbook computers. These machines with their 8"-10" screens, small footprint, and conservative architecture have come into their own from several major players. ASUS, MSI, IBM, and Dell have all presented the market with a compelling device in the $300-500 range. Secondly, these systems fill the needs of the majority of net users. They surf the web, check email, author simple documents, and can be used to tote around presentations. Not geared for the power-users out there mixing audio and video, but engineered for a mass market. I want a Macbook light or mini, or nano, or pico, or whatever Stevie J calls it. Give me a 1.2G Atom, 2g ram, 120g HD, and the rest of the cast of usual suspects!

@Noobs-R-Us:
Looks like the below $1000 is likely a misinterpreted rumor. The $800 part is going to be a new cinema display LCD monitor.
So instead of an announcement of a cheaper macbook you are getting a very expensive monitor.
So if the latest revision to this rumour is true and it's an $800 monitor then Apple is still crazy expensive for peripherals.
Just last week Dell had a 1 day sale on their 24" Dell E248WFP for $279.99. Regular price for the top end Dell 24" is $700 and that goes on sale frequently. The 27" with displayport connection is $950 and can be gotten for much less by calling a corporate sales rep.
