Apple Adds iTunes 8 Functions to Apple TV
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 4:15 PM on October 3, 2008
Looks like its Update Day at Apple--the company just released Apple TV 2.2, which users can access through the "update software" menu option in Settings. The software revamp now includes support for features introduced in iTunes 8.0, including video playlists, Genius playlists and HDTV show purchasing, and plugs a couple of security holes as well. How's it playing, kids? Any problems? [Macrumors]

Looks good to me.
Making a Genius list on Apple TV couldn't be easier.
Finally the movie lists treat 'alphabetical' in the same manner as iTunes on the Mac.
Info and links on Movie purchase/rental screen is a welcome 'speedbump'.
Interesting how it defines certain TV shows that I ripped myself as 'HD'!

@inkswitch: I haven't tested but it's a start. I've been wanting this feature ever since I got my AppleTV. Hopefully they'll fix that, but it's a start. FINALLY.

Well, the one feature I've been waiting for... music video shuffle... is completely broken. I have 215 music videos, most of which I've ripped myself but a very few of which I bought from the iTunes music store.
When I start a music video "shuffle all", it will randomly play one of the 215 videos... and after that it will only play videos purchased from the iTunes music store. If I select an artist with all of my own ripped videos, it will randomly play one of that artist's videos over and over again, no matter how many videos of that artist's I have.
So this is going to be fixed, I hope... I mean seriously, this wasn't even tested maybe?

WTF is a Genius playlist? Sounds like some retarded playlist that spews Apple hype and propoganda. Hmm.. you know, that actually sounds like something apple would do.
Anywho, I never got the whole Apple TV thing. I've seen demos and promos for it, but the whole thing reeks of suckage. Again, there are so many better (and more feature rich) options than the shiny POS that Apple tossed in the mix.

@inkswitch: Welcome to Ilife with Apple. Where if it doesn't come out of Steve's @ss we don't and won't support it.

@KLanD: Ah, I see your justification. It's too bad all those demos and promos were so "suckage," who can blame Apple for creating a shiny POS for your living room. And then trying to update the functionality; how dare they.

I got 3 AppleTV's....and wow. They're phenomenal. Just a couple of rules you need to adhere to:
1) Rip/Convert movies to spec's outlined by apple here: [www.apple.com]
Visual Hub (Mac) [www.techspansion.com] is AWESOME for pre-existing content or downloaded content.
HandBrake (Win/Mac) [handbrake.fr] is AWESOME for ripping DVD's. There's even an AppleTV preset.
2) Decide on 40 or 160 gigs...this basically boils down to do you want to stream or sync. Stream = 40, Sync = 160
3) Discover a love for YouTube. God this is so awesome to throw on during parties.
4) Music Video Shuffle...god how I've wanted this for so long...again..parties!
5) Throw some funny or hot chick pics on the screen saver...but get a lot of them like ~1,000 These are fun to watch.
6) Last but not least, tag your custom content correctly with MetaX [www.kerstetter.net] so they show up as music videos, tv shows, etc.
6 Simple Rules for owning an AppleTV.

Works fine for me (and many others on the Apple Discussion forums: [discussions.apple.com]
Are you sure your music videos are tagged as Music Video and not Movies?

Does this mean no living room oriented surprises from Apple for the Christmas season? I was hoping that the "brick" was the rumored Apple TV with built in tuner, time shift, and the ability to sling content to my iPhone. I'm holding out on the Apple TV until then...

HA! Nice little bug there in the comment section. Both IE and Chrome show my dotted line crossing out of the comment box and across the screen.

Hopefully this fixes some of the crashing issues! I use that thing about twice a month and EVERY SINGLE DAMN TIME to go to use it it's FUBARD. Try to rent a movie and it says it's contacting iTunes..................................................................................................................................... It never does anything. Turn it off and on and POOF, it works. About every fifth time I rent a movie I get nothing but a blue screen. Again, turn it off and on and POOF, it works. I've gotten to the point where I just unplug it after each movie. Absolutely no damn point in it being on all the time.
