American Airlines Caves In to Religious Groups' Pressure, Filters In-Flight Porn
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 6:20 AM on October 10, 2008
I was hoping that American Airlines would stand up against religious groups' stupid demands, keeping their in-flight online service completely un-filtered. After all, they had great arguments: filtering porn sites will jeopardise the access to legitimate web sites, hindering the usability of their aeroplane wireless network. Not to mention the fact that people wanting to look at naughty bits in airplanes can always watch the porn stored in their computers, mobile phones, and personal multimedia players. The network filtering is not going to change that. Sadly, they now have changed their tune:
Since the launch of Gogo, American has not experienced any reported incidents of customers viewing inappropriate content via the Gogo service. However, we believe this is an appropriate measure to take.
If they have had no incidents--as expected, just as you don't hear of many people watching porn in their portable DVD players in a plane--, why give up? What happened to their technical arguments? Is the filtering going to limit web access to legitimate services or not? Most probably, American Airlines will avoid answering those questions.
But besides that, are they going to regulate people looking at porn on their own devices too? What about reading Playboy? Are they going to ban Playboy from flights? And are they going to filter Gizmodo because we post NSFW topless girls covered in oil playing Wii Sports once in a while?
Of course, logical questions like these will probably find no answers from American Airlines either. Religious groups like Focus on the Family, on the other side, would probably love to answer them with axes, pitchforks, and torches.
Another sad day in the history of a country that has defended personal freedom and responsibility as a core value since its very beginning. [Sky talk]

I think this shouldn't even have to be a rule or anything. People should just have common sense and consideration and not watch their pr0n in an airplane full of people and kids. That stuff should be watched in private.

@Jrsy is the dude, playing the dude, disguised as another du...: But their not getting off on their crappy sites, and their crappy sites don't have explicit material on them. If you want to look at porn, go head. Just do it at home or something, and not in public. Also, it's American Airlines telling you you can't look at porn with their in-flight internet service, not any religious group.

I am a big fan of porn, but damn if I would even feel comfortable watching a rated R movie on a flight. Listen, I am all about freedom. But part of freedom is respecting the rights of your fellow man too. Something I think is sorely lacking these days. So I won't watch questionable material because I don't want to offend the people sitting next to me, which on a plane is WAY to close as it is. =)
Even if there are no complaints, They should have the ability to filter at least known porn sites. They are running a business and need to be able to protect the image of that business with their customers. This is not a freedom issue, this is a customer service issue. If people feel so strongly about getting porn through inflight wi-fi, maybe they will change their tune if another carrier offers the service sans filtering.
It is all about the pressures of the market. The airlines are more sensitive to this than many others.
Meanwhile, I will watch my PG-13 material on a PMP since inflight wi-fi lacks the throughput to stream well anyway. =)

Having Internet access on a plane makes it a lot easier to access porn. Most consumers of porn don't schedule their port fetish ahead of time, so they won't necessarily think to pre-load their laptop before hopping on board. But if it happens to pop up while browsing it's an easy reminder that it's there and easily accessible.
Not only do I not want any kids subjected to this stuff, I don't want to be either. If someone is sitting an isle seat, everything they are doing on their laptop is visible to a whole lot of passengers. This is a welcome change in my book.

so this isn't really going to stop who they want to stop...it's only going to annoy people who want to go to legitimate sites like penisland.com

@doubledeej: If someone spend enough of their time "on the road", they do think to preload their laptops. So this will not stop you or anyone else from being assaulted with pr0n.
It seems to me a better solution would be for anyonw who sees someone watching such material on a plan to loudly and roundly embarass the porn watcher. It's not ok to watch it in a public place. Period. And using our social norms to embarass citizens to act considerately seems much less intrusive and better aimed at target.

Given the notorious unreliability of filtering mechanisms, what I'd do if I was American is _say_ that they're implementing filters (for the PR benefit, think of the children) and then not actually do anything, or do the minimum (little or no cost involved). Then when someone complains, they just say - we tried, but the filters didn't work.

This is pointless... so you block the internet. What about magazines or dvds? If they are gonna do it, then they are gonna do it. Probably just religious groups and religious flight attendents that want to filter our lives. The problems with filters is they may filter things that aren't pornographic as well. And American even admits its not an issue, and if it was as awkward as it were for the Flight Attendant, I think arrests would be made and as pointed above doesn't require the internet to accomplish, just a magazine.

This was not a religion vs non-religion type of an issue, its a decency issue. These "religious groups" are family oriented groups who are religious but whose focus is the health and well being of the family unit.
This includes keeping people clear from situations where say some perv is checking out porn on the plain next to them and their kids. Its a reasonable request to see to it that people aren't being all kinds of pervish next to them on the plane, and its a weak weak attempt at discrediting them to call them a "religious group" knowing this kind of reference will encourage a certain type of reaction when they could just as easily called them by name or stated the kind of religious group they are. Focus on the Family was one of the main groups, and it should have been said up front that it wasn't an attempt to keep non-religious people down, but to maintain a reasonable environment in a closed area of public transportation.

You people -- including the author of this piece -- that object to this change are ridiculous. First of all, get a life -- or perhaps try a relationship now and then. We've all found porn to fill a need but if you can't survive a few hours on a plane, in close quarters with 100+ other people, without the urge to watch the nasty, you need some professional help. Really. Secondly, if it wasn't a religious group pushing for this would that make it MORE acceptable to you? If it gives you some comfort to sneer at religious groups and somehow justify your own vices then perhaps the maturity part of growing up just hasn't kicked in yet for you. Lastly, if you are comfortable with watching naked people while you are within 10 feet of a dozen strangers then you are either a type of exhibitionist or twisted in some other way. Like one of the other posters, I feel it is inappropriate to watch certain R-rate material when I am near others because it is simply improper to do so. That's not a judgment on the material itself, it is simply socially unacceptable. Grow up, folks. You'll have plenty of time to play when you get to the hotel room.
