A Literal Hands-On of the PS3 Keypad
Posted by Mark Wilson at 6:40 AM on October 2, 2008
Ever since the PlayStation 3 QWERTY keypad was announced, we've been wondering (incessantly night and day) whether or not you could actually reach the thing as it sits perched on top of the DualShock 3. But according to some pics snapped by MTV, it doesn't look like you'll need grotesque, alien fingers to reach the buttons—though we're still a little worried that our palm fat is going to knock those analogue sticks around a bit. And are palms are quite svelte. Really. [MTVMultiplayer]

@.endejas.: You must be referring to the SIXAXIS. The DS3 is fairly hefty.

How much does this throw the center of balance off the DS3? The thing already felt horribly light, and I wonder if having a weight on the front of the controller would be such a good idea.

@ripfire: Why do snobbish Xbox owners think that just because they have Live that PS3 doesn't have the same features? Cause it does and it costs NOTHING!

What are we waiting for? PS3 has chat. People who PAY for XBL are getting ripped off!
In addition there are plenty of places in which to type and the onscreen keyboard SUCKS! This will come in very handy!

Yeah the PSP should have a slide out key pad similar to this, but I might buy this one for typing URLs as I dont chat.

See! This isn't nearly as bad as many a internet-commenter made it to be. All it took was picking up a Dualshock to understand that.

Seeing as it attaches to the top of the controller, does it prevent the use of the L1/R1 triggers or the L2/R2 buttons? Since the 360's chatpad attaches at the bottom, you can leave it attached to the controller indefinitely without losing the left/right bumpers.

@DetroitRhino: I was wondering the same thing, but after looking closely at the pic above, there looks to be bumpers on the top corners of the typing pad.
I guess it could work, but the 360 design is definitely a lot better.

@DetroitRhino: You have full access to the bumpers...the ones on the keypad are for another function...also remember...if it really gets in your way it is fully function while detached from your controller.

Looks good to me.
Now that I think about it, it's pretty natural just to move your thumbs up considering the position of your hand/fingers when holding your controller.
The angle between the thumb and index is smaller meaning it's in a more natural position (hold out your hands relaxed, you'll see).
Now the 360 chatpad is below so you would have to reach down meaning a greater angle from thumb to index; more awkward, strain.
This is just what I perceive in my head. I have not actually used the 360's chatpad so chill out if the scenario I described is totally incorrect.

its for LittleBigPlanet there is only on screen text and you have to use a crappy cell phone style on-screen keyboard. but its still in Beta so I hope they change it. the rest of the game is sweet.
P.S. yes PSN is free but live has a better less laggy connection when playing games like Call of Duty 4, I have both so I know. And I like my messanger kit so i will need to pick one of these up as well.
also this will work because remember PS3 has an Internet browser, and this also has an electro-static mode to run like a touch pad on a laptop.

@Nintenboy01: agreed! sony executives talking with ergonomics engineer:
- c'mon! let's put the keyboard in the lower part of the controller! It is more ergonomic!
- No, our rival did it first! We can copy them!
- but everyone is going to bump on the other buttons!
- STFU!!

this is pointless
you can find a wireless keyboard and mouse for cheaper than this and just plug it into you ps3. that way youll feel more like your typing on an actual computer instead of a cell phone or something

From: The person that matters To: The person that doesn't Dear Mr. Loser, Although it has been a thrill to deal death to you, I feel the time has come to part ways. While your skills are impressive(for a blind, one-armed, infant), I fear they are just no match for a player of my caliber. My friend, God did not see fit to bless you with even a miniscule amount of talent. In the future, to avoid further embarrassments, I suggest you change your handle to:CRIESLIKEABITCH. Sincerely, UrMaster This is the standard message I send to people I whip on, during Call of Duty 4 and Resistance.....trust me when you get one, u can either ignore it....(which is an impossibility) or respond with a two word reply: FUK U .... so yeah you need this........i have a bluetooth keyboard i snagged on Ebay...for 20 bucks and it is far more fun torchering people I beat than actually playing......and no I just don't whip on kids......though beating them is the best.....lol
