$US900 Contraption Trims Your CDs to Make Them Rounder, You Poorer
Posted by Adam Frucci at 3:40 AM on October 14, 2008
We've certainly seen our fair share of insane, overpriced equipment aimed at overmonied audiophiles (usually from Furutech), but this is a new one to me. The Audio Desk Systeme from Germany takes your CD, spins it at a super-high speed, and uses a blade to cut it down to a more perfect circle. Apparently, this prevents very slight wobbling as it spins, which can create a jitter in the digital stream that affects the sound, according to idiots. It's a mere $US900, which, in these circles, is a total bargain. [Ultra System via Dvice]

Do they have one for gramophone wax cylinders? The tonal qualities of those cylinders blow CDs and vinyl out of the water. I can't imagine how great my cylinders would sound if they were absolutely perfect cylinders.

@Turbo Driver: No... belt drive decouples the platter from vibrations from the motor. Direct drive is preferred by DJ's, but audiophiles prefer belt drive.
I hate belt drive because mine broke recently and I had to hunt a bit to find a replacement.

BTW, is the belt they use to spin the pulley a Monster Belt? B/c if not, you will never get the rotational torque needed to overcome the lack of sufficient brake horsepower, which will lead to underspin. But let's see how good this really works. And to that, we turn it over to our tame DJ's. Some say, their breath smells of mercury, and that they roam around the woods at night foraging for wolves. All we know is they're called, the Daft Punk Stigs!

@Dr.Danger, Hasta la victoria siempre!: Do you like Phil Collins? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

The variations are meaningless. The data processors and buffers compensate for any fluctuations. No matter what happens with the disk, your hearing a steady stream. It's NOT analog, it's digital.
This is really stupid.
If there is a scratch in the CD, it picks it up on the next time around.

Sweet, now I can get that extra uumph from my Whitney Houston album
You know, It's hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks, but The Greatest Love of All is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it's not too late to better ourselves. Since, Elizabeth, it's impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It's an important message, crucial really. And it's beautifully stated on the album.

My car got 40 rods to the hoghead. That reminds me of the time time I took the ferry over to Shelbyville; I needed a new heel for my shoe. So, I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on them. 'Give me five bees for a quarter,' you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. They didn't have any white onions, because of the war; the only thing you can get was those big yellow ones.

I don't know, I have a number of out-of-round disks I'd love to trim just so they don't shake the snot out of my laptop drive (or xbox 360 drive, that thing is bloody sensitive to disk balance). The vibration noise alone is certainly annoying for music/movie enjoyment, jitter debates aside. In audio players though the disk spins slower than in pc drives, so the vibration isn't as loud.
The problem isn't really the concept, the problem is the price. Anyone who would spend this much, already has a nice quiet, expensive, buffered cd player that just isn't going to get much benefit from the trim.

I take it none of you has had an out-of-round CD shatter in their drive. I have, scared the crap out of me when it blew. Of course, it took the drive w/ it.
The ONLY thing I could see this being good for is if you had to move data off of a CD in a real hurry. But, I think you could probably do it faster than w/ a slightly slower drive if you had to "correct" your cds/dvds to achieve said speed in the first place.
Those 4x, 6x, etc write speeds are based upon the tolerances in which a disc is manufactured. Exceeding this in a write environment could yield less than optimum results obviously.
And, playback is the same rate. They stopped advancing CD-ROM/DVD speeds hugely because past a certain point they couldn't get the medium to spin smoothly enough. In some cases the discs would actually shatter inside the drive.
Pretty much anything over 52x (~20k rpm or so) in a CD-ROM drive will shatter a disc.
Though these days w/ flash drives able to store MORE information than a CD, no reason to not just send them back and forth instead. Less delicate anyway.

Super. So what you have done now is exposed the edge of your CD, DVD whatever to air and started the oxidation process that will, eat the 20ish micron layer of vapor deposited metal that was nicely sealed before some TOOL invented this. Not only that but you are very likely promoting surface de-lamination. I worked in quality control for a CD manufacturer and witnessed un-coated disc oxidation. wobble in a CD has no effect on sound quality.
It's not an analog record.. It's digital.. the digital packets are read in decoded and clocked out at a regular speed. the most you would get is skip if a packet could not be decoded in time to be clocked out. But that is what the buffers are for.
Wobbly ones and zeros .. bah..
