460,000-Brick Lego Tower Breaks World Record
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 1:30 AM on October 8, 2008

At 96.73 feet (29.485 meters) this Lego tower built in the Rathaus Platz in Vienna has broken the world record for the tallest Lego construction in the world. It took nearly 460,000 bricks and it was built over four days. The views from the top are quite stunning.
The tower included 121 plates designed and built by 3,000 kids using 2 x 4 Lego bricks. The kids participated in the building process to celebrate 100 Years of the Friends of Children festival in Austria. The previous Guinness World Record was set at 96.13-feet (29.3 meters), last May in Legoland Windsor.

If you are working in a Go Miniman Go contest video, it doesn't need to be 96.73 feet high or take 3,000 kids to complete. It just needs to be whatever size and technique you want, as soon as it's funny and gets to us by the end of the month deadline. If you want to participate, check the contest rules here and send your video now. [Brothers Brick via Brickarms]

So if I used more bricks and built this thing laying on it's side, would that count??

The question is not how long did it take to construct this, but how long did it take to get 460,000 bricks in one place!?

The fact that there's wires that are holding it up is just cheap if you ask me. There should be no wires at all.

Pure. Awesome. Almost as cool as the famous scale model of a US Navy aircraft carrier, and just barely not as cool as the ginormous Star Wars battle.

I've heard about this before but didn't know people were still trying to break the record and make taller ones. Seems pretty awesome to me.

Are we sure this one doesn't have Styrofoam on its innards? I was totally disappointed finding out the Indiana Jones lego-boulder was fake. I won't fall for it again!

It would have been even cooler if they hadn't used guide wires, because if you think about it why stop at 96 feet. The guide wires will hold everything in place and stop it from leaning or swaying, so the only limits to how tall it can go are materials.

What's with all the wires holding it up? If you're gonna build the worlds tallest LEGO whoosamajig it'd better be freestanding.

Because building a world record lego tower is so hard when you have cables strapped to the ground to hold it in place. Why didn't they just build a 1000 foot lego tower and just have a Chinook flying above to support it? Wouldn't be any different...

"I want my block back."
Anyone remember that Lego commercial in the 80's (90's?) Where they are building a large structure out of Lego brand building blocks and this little b@stard kid at the end says "I want my block back."
I always wanted to slap that little b@stard...not sure why, he just looked like he needed it. and Yes, I have issues.

I really don't get why grown adults find lego amusing. It stopped being fun when I was like five years old.

@Con Seannery:
So did I! Except it was less built entirely out of LEGO bricks, and more partly decorated with them. And it was less 5000 square feet and more 3200 square feet. And it was less just a throwaway line on the internet and more actually viewable on national primetime TV sometime in November (not sure of the date yet, though).

@mrtallbones:
Well, Bricklink's largest lot runs just shy of 19,000 bricks, so that's no good. LEGO Factory, on the other hand, could _theoretically_ handle the load, but if they don't have them all in stock it could take quite a while for the backorder to be filled. The least expensive 2x4 bricks from LEGO Factory are orange, which run $0.14 apiece, so you'd be dropping $64,400 _before_ shipping (if you want a more stylish color scheme, you could end up paying another $4600-9200).
