$US100,000 Electric DeLorean Can't Store 1.21 Gigawatts, Runs at 88MPH
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 6:30 AM on October 3, 2008
This is the Electro DeLorean, a fully electric retrofit of the 1981 iconic Back to the Future car. It's also a completely wasted opportunity: If there's a DeLorean version that needed a lightning hook system, this is the one. Still, you can add it yourself, because it is for sale on eBay for $US100,000 right now, including the obligatory flux capacitator prop. According to the seller, this is the "fastest and longest range electric DeLorean" you can buy, capable of doing 88MPH:
YouThis is a 1981 DeLorean, DMC-12 that was converted to run on electric power. It uses no gasoline what so ever. The stock V6 has been removed and replaced by a powerful electric motor. This car is quicker than a stock DeLorean and it's top speed is over 88 MPH.
This amazing car is powered by thirteen 12 volt 100 amp-hour deep cycle Deka 9A31 Intimidator AGM batteries. The famous Zila Z1K - HV motor controller supplies up to 1000 amps of current to the series wound WarP 9 electric motor.
The electric DeLorean can travel up to 65 kms on a charge and it takes only 2 - 3 hours to recharge when the on board charger, a ManzinitaMicro PFC-20b is plugged into 220 volts AC or 8 hours when plugged into 110 volts AC.

Why would I pay 100,000 dollars for an ugly-ass car (though it may be a classic) when I could spend that money on a car that actually looks good? And, maybe, uses nuclear fusion as a power source?

jumpin jiggawatts! i wonder how it would surivive in cali traffic given that 40 miles at 5mph stop n go traffic isn't exactly conventional.

Great Scott!
This car seems familiar. We'll have to use a local church as a fuel conductor to get the car going. But if we go beyond 50mph the car will blow up.

40 miles? That would be about approximately to school, back, friends, back and no more juice for the Friday night ahead? Make it 10,000 miles on a 5 minute charge and I might reconsider.

40 miles? That makes this a viable commuter car. Kewl!
BTW: being faster than a stcok DeLorean ain't saying much. The original model basically ran a humdrum Renault motor.

Shockingly awesome...
Now.. I'll need a "DMC-12V" license plate to go with it.

@7raczyk: Um. Yeah, right as soon as battery energy density jumps 25000% and full-capacity recharge time drops 750%.
Did you even think about what you just said? Over three oil changes worth of a charge in the time it takes to shower.

@nutbastard: Naw, there are several thousand of us on my campus so we park in a parking garage. I'm sure there is an outlet in there somewhere but then being the slacker that I am I usually don't get in until late and end up with the furthermost parking space there is.

15.6 KWh charged in 2 hours @ 220v = 7.8 kilowatts constant = 35 amps... yeah that could work! most of these 'lectric car charging equations dont... equate.

@Serolf Divad: Yeah, when they were filming Back to The Future they had to drop the factory engine and replace it with the flat 6 out of the Porsche 911 so it would go fast enough to be believable. Sad, the car looks pretty cool but it's just so slow and heavy.

I do think the $100,000.00 price tag is a demotivater for all those DIY electric car buffs. But it does prove that an electric vehicle can be fun while not having practical stamped all over it. 'cause lets face it, if practicality really turned us on, we'd all be trying to strutting in Smart Cars...hmmmm.

"You mean we're outta gas...?"
"Yeah, its no big deal, we got Mr. Fusion."
"Mr. Fusion powers the time circuits and the flux capacitor; the internal combustion engine runs on ordinary gasoline, it always has. There's not going to be a gas station around here until sometime next century. Without gasoline, we can't get the DeLorean up to 88 miles per hour."
"So what do we do?"
"Just use the electic motor and get the hell out of here"

The stock DeLorean does have a small engine by most standards, 130 hp out of a V6 is nothing special... the original engine though will easily keep up with most other cars, and it can go a lot faster then 88 mph. Not that you'd know with the 80's stock speedometer, (stops completely at 85 mph).

@Serolf Divad: I remember watching something about the delorean a while back that said they released a twin turbo concept. It would have gone into production, except for the whole drug trafficking/entrapment thing.
Also, 40 miles isn't bad, but I'd need at least 70 to feel comfortable...my commute is 25 miles each way plus sitting in traffic, and side trips. Maybe one day we'll get decent electric cars.

Hmm, swore I saw this before on Youtube. It screeched as it took off, which put a big grin on my face. Have to say full electric isn't the best way to do things though. My idea would be hydrogen-electric, but we don't have those fuel stations all over the map, now do we?
