You Actually Have to Own iPhone Apps to Slam Them Now
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 11:40 PM on September 29, 2008
Unlike their usual tack lately, Apple is doing something at the App Store that actually helps developers. Before, you could review—and slam—any app you wanted willy-nilly, even if you didn't own it. That changed over the weekend—now you have to own an app before you can review it, preventing an onslaught of one-star reviews for Tetris simply because EA is charging eight bucks for it. Now if Apple could apply some of that logic and fairness on their end and stop jerking developers around. [Alley Insider]

@Mayor McRib: "...especially since there are so many flashlight apps to choose from."
Holy crap, there are? I'm headed over to the iTunes App Store right now, gonna grab me one of those virtual tubes of naughty fun, yes I am. Gonnna pull the shades and
--oh, wait--
You said flashlight, didn't you?
Never mind.

I was just browsing the App store before I came here. There are a few other things I noticed:
The 'All free apps' link is missing. So you can't search for just free apps.
The 'Top Paid Apps' link has 'lighter' as #1, even though it has an average rating of one star. How that is #1 I have no idea.

This comment is boring and needs to be proof read. It is full of grammatical errors and not worth your time. I recommend DaiWalka's comment instead.

Agreed 100%. I spent at least 15 minutes looking for the "latest apps" button. It's the best way to keep track of what's new, especially since there are so many flashlight apps to choose from.

@Fountain: Don't mean to be rude but why do you even bother commenting about it then? i mean they're some other great stories on the from page, about 18 to be more specific.

Great move but the changes, also to the app store inteface seem to have taken away my ability to see the "latest apps". I was used to choosing, APP STORE>ALL IPHONE APPLICATIONS. This brought up all the apps and sorted them by date. I could then see which apps were new since I had last been looking. Now that feature is gone. Anyone see different? And I know there is a new app section but it does not cover since I have been in the store.

This is good cause am tire of reading bullshit comment's From people that haven't even try the apps out, I wish they do the same with Music & Movies, like someone already said, there's always some moron complaining about why there's no buy option and is only rental, like if they where going to buy it.

@Fountain: Agreed! This post sucks and that's why I'm not going to read it either. And, at free, it's way overpriced. Offer it to me for, like, pay me 10 bucks, then maybe I'd bother reading it.
One star.

Good. I had gotten very tired of "reviews" commenting on the price of an app without having even tried it. Like I need someone else to tell me whether something looks too expensive.

I want to see Apple ban application owners from leaving reviews on their own products. There have been a number of turkey apps where I've seen things like "best app ever - smooth and predictable - don't know how I managed to get along without it." You have to *know* these were written by the app developers themselves.

I haven't actually read it, but I don't really see why this post is necessary. I don't think other people should read it. In my opinion there are too many post like this already.
I give it one star.

It took Apple long enough.
All those BS comments about why an app is 'way to fucking expensive' should be gone now.

Finally - it'll be helpful to know that an app's not exactly what I want b/c it's not what I need, rather than b/c the person rating it woke up on the wrong side of the bed due to his girlfriend eating his last pop-tart.

@schmere, when you are trying to get an opinion on whether or not to buy an app, it's hard to sort thought 400 comments consisting of "this should be free" "it's too expensive" "this app sucks, try MY clone of _____ instead for only $14.99!" and "Free Kevin!" an so forth.
All I can say is, Thank God for this small piece of competence by Apple. Now if they'd pull their heads out about these app rejections I wouldn't have to jailbreak my touch.

@Fountain: I don't have time to read this post however I'll still throw my 2 cents in anyways. Who needs to read or even comprehend what's been read. All that counts is opinion and I think this stinks. You should all just save yourselves the trouble of having actually read the rest of the replies here and just agree with me now. Believe me, you'll thank me for it later.

@Blinklink11: I doubt Apple is going to take the time to go back through everyone's purchased apps and align them up with the user reviews in order to make sure they bought it before reviewing.
Me thinks they will just start this now and not look back.

Don't get wrong, this is great news! BUT why does Apple have to ALWAYS fix one thing and BREAK another?
They removed the "All iPhone Applications" link!!!!!!
This link was the only way to see all the new apps!!! You click that link then sort by release date.
Clicking any of the "new" categories is worthless. They DO NOT show you what is new. So much is missing from those categories.
IMO, the app store is now worthless. There is zero visibility. Good luck finding new apps.

This all started on Thursday the 25th. When you tried to browse "all new apps" or "all free apps" the newest date was September 15th. You had to look in EACH category to see what was new. Total pain.
If you use the "Power Search" You can view all free apps, but there is no way to sort by date, and the apps themselves in that view do not show the date either. In fact, I cannot figure out WHAT order they apps are showing up in after a Power Search.
I wrote App Store Support (Since you cannot talk to a live person) and I got a message back last night saying they did not understand the problem. Which is true, since the feature of seeing newest apps by date no longer exists!
What I wrote:
"Comments: When I go into the App Store, and click on "all applications", iphone
applications, Free Applications, etc, and then sort by release date, I am only
showing apps up to September 15th.
Nothing newer than September 15th will show up on my computer. However, newer
things are there. If I pick a "featured" application in iTunes App Store, it
will show up, with a newer date, such as September 23rd."
Their Response:
"I understand you have an issue with applications and their dates. I am sorry for
this inconvenience, I know how upsetting that can be. My name is Justin and I
would be delighted to assist with this issue.
Unfortunately, I am not fully understanding your issue. Please provide a step by
step description as well as screenshots so we can see what is going on here. We
look forward to your response.
Thank you for being an iTunes Store customer. We appreciate your business. I
hope you have a fantastic day!"

Screw Apple!
I understand that the "New" category does not show all the new apps that have been released on certain dates. I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused.
I cannot tell if or when the "All iPhone Applications" link will be added back.
Apple recognizes that no one is better qualified to provide feedback about iTunes than the people who use it.
I encourage you to use the iTunes Feedback page to submit your comments:
