World's First Tidal Turbine Farms to Power 40,000 Scottish Homes (or Pubs)
Posted by John Herrman at 8:30 PM on September 30, 2008
Following the apparent success of SeaGen, a small deployment of tidal turbines of the coast of Northern Ireland, Scottish Power is seeking approval for plans to build two farms of 20 30-metre, err, watermills promising a steady power supply for up to 40,000 homes. As with the previous example of tidal power generation, the most obvious problems have been pretty much addressed: fish, seals, and cryptozoological specimens (probably) won't be harmed by the slow-spinning blades, and shipping routes won't be affected on account of the depth of the deployment. Scottish Power claims that the project should be completed in about three years. Click the above image for a explanatory video. [BBC via CleanTechnica]

As far as I can tell, the Scots would want the power to go to the pubs before their homes. For the greater good and all that.

The Norwegian guy didn't seem very sure of himself. I'm sure the local Scottish folk are probably yelling at him. "If you think you can brring ya wee little fan and stick it in our churrning water, ya'r dreamin' laddie!!"
Have they considered the dangers to Nessy? She doesn't like staying in the lake and I would hate to see her all cut up from these underwater fans.

@majortom1029: This is an actual plan, not some company's "hope." This will be the first turbine farm, not the first turbine deployment. I linked back to an earlier one of those in the UK.

It might not be the biggest, but it sure is the best.

I'm a little confused by the supporters of wind and tidal power. The laws of Conservation of Energy are immutable. If "X" amount of tidal/wind energy is converted to electricity by a turbine, then that much energy is taken *out of* the wind/tidal forces, slowing them down, changing the way the wind/water flows. In other words, if heavily adopted, both of these plans *will* be weather-affecting by virtue of having changed the way air and water flow around the world. What am I missing?

@willie333: So maybe you should watch the video instead of looking at just one picture.

@Odd_Thomas: It won't last. Brothers and sisters are natural enemies. Like Englishmen and Scots! Or Welshmen and Scots! Or Japanese and Scots! Or Scots and other Scots! Damn Scots! They ruined Scotland!

Okay, looking at the picture of a motor suspended by strings, umm what keeps the whole motor from spinning in the ocean motion? It really has to suck to be a deep sea fisherman there. But hey, there's always the pubs ... it's where I get my best ideas!

This seems more practical than wind - the tides are not constant but they are mostly predictable.

@VeredTheia: Take into account the fact that everytime we build on land or put a boat in the ocean we take away from that energy. It's unavoidable. We affect it just as it affects us.

Water/tides have a tendency of overwhelming pretty much anything man-made put in its way, eventually. I wouldn't worry about a turbine farm getting in the way. It'll be interesting to see how viable it is...next up, the gulfstream!

@VeredTheia:
A windmill does slow the wind speed some... But so does a skyscraper. Skyscrapers do affect weather, just not to a degree that really matters.
Ultimately, wind power is solar power. As long as there's convection, there's wind.

Watch the video. It is lowered by those cables, thats not how it stays in the water.

@VeredTheia: Apparently you are oblivious to the fact of how much power there is in the ocean. We are taking a fraction of a minute, inconsequential, teeny weeny, itsy bitsy, little smidgen of the oceans power to turn these turbines.
And as crashproof said, it all gets replaced by the sun.

@Jeb_Hoge:
The gulf stream would actually be a viable form of this technology, something that flows constantly would be good, but I can't see it containing as much power as the tides, convection versus gravity, but then again, you would have to know the exact forces behind said sources, interesting to think about though.

Considering the average Scot spends more time in a pub than a house, it makes sense. God Bless the UK.

Last time I was in Costa Rica - they had hill tops full of these windmills.
Surprisingly 25% of their energy comes from green sources.
and yet... they still don't really have roads..

@Curves: no, no, you've got it all wrong - the greater good would be to power the breweries and distilleries.
We're quite happy to sit in the pubs with just candles and an open fire, so long as the production stays steady.
