Windows Mobile 7 Delayed Half a Year
Posted by Mark Wilson at 11:03 PM on September 23, 2008
Microsoft has informed their investors that Windows Mobile 7, formerly slated for early 2009, would be pushed back for a release sometime in late (second half) 2009. Microsoft did not comment as to any specific reasons for the setback, but it's hard to see the Android launch timing as a complete coincidence (though maybe it is and the entire tech world is not driven by deep, dark conspiracies). Very smart! Avoid releasing a premature system OS.

HTC Touch HD + WinMo 7 has me a bit more excited than the G1/Dream and Android... not going to lie...

@switchxfactor: Yeah I was kinda excited about that too, but the second half of 2009 is a LONG way away :(

If this means a WinMo that isn't a messy pile, then it's all for the better I suppose. For now, I'm guessing that Windows Mobile will be on nicer hardware than Android, which is a shame.

@Joseph: works for me!
I've got no complaints w/ WM6.1 except for the damn PPTP VPN not supporting MPPE... Who the fcuk thought that people still used PPTP un-encrypted!?!

@resource: I don't think Microsoft is going to be hurt (and consequently ban you from ever buying another WM phone) if you went ahead and picked up an Android phone for the time being...
I knew we probably wouldn't actually see WM7 until likely the end of next year, how is that in any way a surprise? (to anyone?)

Why is this delayed or premature??
WM 6 came out 18 months ago (2/07) and barely improved on WM5.
And that still wasn't enough time to get out 7?
Apple is dropping OS revisions constantly, although they still have a ways to go.
I was holding out for a dream combo like HTC Touch HD with WM7/Zune software w/ Skymarket because I like the WM openness over the iPhone platform but there is no way in hell I am waiting until Dec 2009.
Android/Apple, here I come...

My initial decision would be to go to Android, but if WinMo is better, then why not?

WinMo 6.1 came out in April 2008. I'd call that a pretty recent revision, wouldn't you?

PLEASE Microsoft. Stop making new features and get every software dev you have set to streamlining the existing code and reducing the over all footprint of the OS.
Also, I was dumb enough to buy not just one, but TWO copies of Ultimate. You owe me a discount on Windows 7 for your lack of Ultimate Extras in Vista. I mean seriously, what the hell did I pay for Ultimate for? Dreamscene? Bit Locker? Yeah... right.

Not sure... but WinMo looks the best out of all the smartphone OSes. Apple's iPhone UI kinda go old for me. Never had a smartphone before, but I wouldn't mind starting off using WinMo.

@axiomatic:
I definatley agree with you re code optimization, but I think it goes against the entire Windows (mobile or desktop) business model.
Wouldn't their hardware partners revolt if the advertising was - "Buy the new version of Windows. It makes your current computer faster & easier to use!"
Neither HP nor HTC would stand for that.
(I'm glad my HW & OS come from the same company, they have a history of doing just that)

people you didnt get it yet?
I think WinMo is ready but as they saw G1 Android they were surprised, WTF, lets rip all those features, thats how M$ thinks about it.
For people who will still wait until 2009 to get it, well, im sure 100% it will not have any features more than any smartphone available now. But you Bill boys will just follow what M$ says.
"Im a gadget collector, and Im a PC!! And i love to wait for Microsoft software even if it was 3 years late" the next Microsoft I'm a PC ad.

I hope the delay is a sign that MS is going to get serious about the WinMo platform - its been seriously neglected. Put a Zune Lite interface in it, make a shared dev kit Zune/360/WinMo available, and slim down the OS footprint to make it run faster.

WinMo is a horrible platform. It's clunky and slow, which is a serious serious issue when just about every phone on the market has a snappy interface.
Who wants to wait up to 30s for fancy menus and transitions to play out when you just need to make a phone call? When you try a phone at the store, that's obviously the first thing you do.
And the device still requires complicated tweaks which normally are found in the phone's settings. Countless WinMo forums exist where users post registry patches and home brewed firmwares - is this really a consumer phone!
