What All Glasses Will Look Like in 2020
Posted by Mark Wilson at 1:00 AM on September 26, 2008
The latest in designer eyewear, these just-announced, newly-patented "Avant-garde Frames" reduce the strain of glasses that generally pinch your nose and weigh down your ears. By shifting the support to a headband-like contraption, the glasses can hang over your eyes without imposing upon delicate surround tissue or muscles—especially important while jogging. They may look funny to you now, but we're pretty sure headphones looked silly once upon a time, too. Inventor Huang Mei only requires someone to purchase his patents to roll these babies into mass production.

Wait til he comes out with version 2.0. It will include small motors and wiper blades to clean your lenses at the touch of a button, convienently located on the side of the headband (there will be room for expansion so other features/controls can be added later). Left and right hand models will be available in all colors & head sizes.

@DisposableInterloper: I think we stop noticing the pressure because we wear them every day. But it shows in the long run I think. I see a lot of people who stop wearing glasses (my mom after she got LASIK) and have the marks of the glasses on their noses. I guess it's not a big deal to most people.

Sure, make fun, people, but these glasses are perfectly serviceable. All that's really needed to boost their fashionability is to add a bit of bling. You know, like a kajillion Swarovksi crystals...

The problem is the headband. I would replace it with a large weighted mass, like a chef's hat filled with concrete, for greater stability.

@RE-L:
I wear glasses, and I really don't see the point of this "invention." If they fit to your face properly, and the frame is light enough, I can't see how how the pressure could be anything but negligible.

@Jrsy is the dude, playing the dude, disguised as another du...:
By 2020, there will be tense--at times even life-threatening--competition between eyeglass makers and hat makers. You see, to curb the tide of ever-dwindling sales of hats--due, of course, to dreaded "hat hair"--hat makers will have designed glasses that suspend a hat way above your head, never touching your hair.
The retail wars will be deadly, but with style innovations like these at least we'll all be lookin' good. As I will be soon (-47).

@Jrsy is the dude, playing the dude, disguised as another du...: That's what I was thinking. In 2020, glasses won't exist anymore. Lasik is already quite good, and will only get better. If/when health insurance companies start covering Lasik, glasses will be history. Now, this brings up a whole different argument of why insurance comanies will never cover Lasik, but that's for another time & place.

How about just developing a fastener of sorts to attach to the brow or bridge of the nose to support the lenses?
Or better yet, apply some nano Segway technology and have the glasses balance on the bridge of your nose.
