Unconfirmed: An Actual Picture of the New iPod Nano
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 3:00 PM on September 6, 2008
Looks like we've got a supposedly legit, actual spy shot of the new iPod nano in its packaging (apparently originally posted by MacNN in an obscured form before getting cleared up). Thankfully, while it confirms everything we've been hearing about it, it's much, much prettier and Apple-y than what Kevin Rose provided us with, which looked like it was crapped out of a plastic robot Ewok or something before it had its picture taken. This, all assuming that it's actually a legit picture. Orange? My dream of a lime green nano on Tuesday now has wings. Update: We have changed the photo again for one without watermarks we just got in the mail. [MacNN--Thanks Mike]

@MICHAELSD: Whats the need for a blazing fast Vid card in a Mac? Enless your doing crazy grapic design you really have no need. Last time I checked, Mac was not a meca for gaming.

Forget the iPods, I want a redesigned MacBook Pro. Apple has kept the same (amazing) design since the PowerBook, I think it's finally time for a redesign. Anyone think that Apple will put a decent video card in? The ATI 4850 might work, I think it has the same power consumption as the x1600 in the first MBP and it's around as fast as the 8800M GTX, if not faster. Anything else won't really be a big upgrade...

a lot of people will still say it looks like shit, just because they can't say "hey, i'll admit I was wrong." but anyways, i think it looks great. I mean, break it down, it's essentially a 2nd gen, but with a widescreen for videos. and a 2nd gen was essentially a 1st gen but in aluminum. so if you were a fan of the first gen nano, how can you not be a fan of this? if you tell me you never liked the nanos until the 3rd gen, then fine, but don't tell me you like 2 and not 4. it's the same thing. This one's just a bit sexier.

Any of the cards with a 128-bit memory interface (anything up to the 9700M GTS) isn't going to be much of a performance increase over the 8600 GT. I think it's finally time for Apple to step it up, especially if they keep the $2k+ price point.

Anyway, regarding the product, I'm glad to see that the orange color made it to the nanos. Also, I was right about the port. Apple will never be rid of their proprietary port.
I'm still pretty skeptical about the whole curvy thing. That's still not settling well in my mind. I'll have to see it in person and see if it grows on me.

@Ephemera: The irony is that if Macs have paltry cards, they're criticized for having cards that are not the best spec. If they have cards that are actually great, then it's criticized that you won't be doing any gaming on them. Funny little Catch 22. I imagine there's other things one can do with a great graphics card other than game, and at the same time, not involve high end expensive productivity work, though that'd definitely be something worth considering.
In either case, if someone wants a Mac but wants a gaming PC, a Mac with a great card can just save money on buying the separate PC and boot camp the whole shebang.

However, when you're watching a video, the controls would be incorrect. Granted, most of us can get over that quickly, but it'd be an interesting design flaw if they haven't worked around it. No, I can't imagine anyone would've not thought of that, especially Steve Jobs who is so detailed.

If this is considered the "next generation," is it really necessary for Apple to provide new models EVERY SINGLE year? I guess so, since there is a large crowd whose iPods will have crapped out recently and, since they've purchased all of their music from iTunes (which will only play on iPods, of course), they'll automatically look to the "new" model, instead of other players that could (*gasp*) be better.
This is a design step back, as far as I'm concerned, and now no one has ANY room to talk about flash Zune design decisions. Apple had better pull some crazy features out of its ass for iTunes 8. Then again, they don't really have to do anything to retain their marketshare. It's a shame, really, that consumers would put up with that kind of unwarranted dominance.

01: its fuggly as hell, even ugglier than the fatty nano. This more curvy design away from the linear/rounded they had, is not working. yuk.
02: their products get leaked even more than earlier, which also could signal that they doing too much for their own good in order to keep it sealed as they used to do.

This is actually sort of underwhelming seeing as how we essentially saw this same design back when Kevin Rose made his predictions about the new Nano and the like. Honestly, I didn't like the original mock up that Keven gave us, and I don't really like this alleged "final product" because it's essentially the same. All the same, I still expect some people who absolutely detested Kevin's shot to proclaim that they love this with all their heart. For some reason, when it comes from Apple, people just find it better...even if it's identical to the thing that got leaked to the interwebz just a few weeks before. This is coming from somebody who loves Apple too. I'm not a rabid fanboy/cultist, (I own and use a Lenevo X60 with Windows XP alongside my MacBook) but I will admit a strong preference for their products over those of other companies. It's not that I hate the new design, or I find it hideous (though it isn't gorgeous either) I'm just disappointed in the lack of creativity in both Apple and their cultists, and Apple's ability to keep their secrets.

I've got a shuffle and a first-gen iPhone, and I'm planning on selling the iPhone and waiting out Android, so I was considering getting a nano for working out-- the current model (as of this moment) is a great size for mounting in an armband... and the flat back doesn't hurt at all. That seems to be changed, here. The new design is OK-- I don't hate it, but I think I much prefer the fatty. I just think the rounded case is going to prove to be impractical.

@MICHAELSD: It's the opposite. Apple tries not to get their products leaked out with a vengeance, with multiple Dementors placed around unannounced products ready to suck the souls out of anyone who so much as brings a camera within 50 miles of a prototype. On the other hand, there's an army of Droogs that emerges around Apple event determined to uncover any crumb of information about forthcoming products, often at great personal risk to themselves.
It's an epic battle, and it plays itself out again and again. For every Apple spy shot that emerges, untold Droogs have lost their gullivers, and countless Dementors have feasted on their souls.
Because it's Apple, the sacrifice is justified. I mean, just look at that picture! That's the new Nano!!! It's tapered, like an iPhone!!! Now look away, and wait for your breathing and pulse to return to normal.
Needless to say, for any other company, there's simply not the same interest, no army of Droogs, no need for Dementors. Unannounced products sneak out all the time, but no one's pulse ever elevated to stroke-inducing levels by gazing at them, and no one's soul ever got sucked out of their gulliver by posting photos of, say, an unannounced Zojirushi rice cooker, on their blog.

@Faslane66: Current iMacs can play these games just fine. Seriously, the only Macs that have questionable gaming capability are the Macbooks and Mac Minis. All of the others have discrete graphics that are good enough to game on, despite what others might tell you.
Also, fuck Crysis. There I said it.

I'm pretty sure it takes more than 2 years for a shape/style to become Retro/cool..
Well guys, we've come as far forward as we can in this industry.. let's start going backwards.. it'll be fun!

@Faslane66:
I agree... you get the best of both worlds. Plus, my experience is Windows runs much better on a Mac and in some cases outperforms Leopard.

@ddink: Oh. I see. I think it's just a first-gen iPhone, and the chrome is just catching the light in a way that produces the black appearance.

@MICHAELSD:
ArakniD:It has an accelerometer in it too
:-)
MICHAELSD MICHAELSD:
@ArakniD: ****py trolling is ****py trolling ;).
If you're being serious, what makes you say that?
The fact that Apple wouldn't make a widescreen going vertically if you couldnt turn it horizontally, have the ipod detect that turn, and be able to watch a video in widescreen.
of course.

That Burn orange is... hot. Curvature on the sides may make it slippery.

For those complaining that Apple's industrial design of late is stale or not revolutionary enough, consider this- The current 'squat Nano' is basically a square and this and older Nano's are oblong- now how many times can you reinvent the square or oblong!

Wake me up when apple decides to add actual features to the iPod rather than just changing its shape. I'm so not excited about this... yawn.

I post something about this every 12 to 24 hours, but this time, I'll say it with more attitude. The important thing about the new Nano design is not what it looks like or how much the Nano and Zune are similar (for obvious reasons). The important thing is the internal volume compared with the overall dimensions.
With the "fat" Nano, it was pretty clear, I hope, that there was pretty much no space inside other than hardware components: circuit board, control scheme, flash memory, i/o ports, and probably a molded battery. The reason why the new, longer Nano is subliminally confusing is not because it looks like the 2G Nano (or the Zune) but because it looks like it has a significantly different internal hardware design. The innards are where the stuff is. What in hell is Apple going to do with the outside that is going to tip anyone off to anything about what it does? Do you want a hand-crank on the side, or a permanently affixed sticker that says "Intel Inside" or something? The iPod has a screen, a connector, a headphone jack, and a control wheel. It's been like that pretty much since it came out. Do people look at a picture of the outside of a new car and say, "Oh, it has doors, windows, and wheels...AGAIN"? Maybe you do, but I don't.
The new Nano has an internal wifi antenna. I'm putting myself way out there to make this bold, unexciting claim. Please stop saying it looks like the Zune, or whatever. The Nano and the Zune look similar BECAUSE THEY ARE BASICALLY THE SAME THING. Jesus christ. If you want to find a never before seen way of combining a screen, controls, and an audio port with some flash memory and a battery, go for it. If the Nano has a wifi antenna, then you can say that the Nano and the Zune both have wifi antennas. Big deal.
Seriously, some of you people and what you say... you would be terrible doctors. "He looks about the same on the outside as before, so he's probably fine." OMG.

Isn't Kevin Rose's a mockup though? Supporting this is that his picture looked like it had the headphone jack on top and this one clearly has it on bottom.

"thankfully, it's much, much prettier and Apple-y"??
No wonder you blokes get get caned for being one-eyed apple fanboys.
I do like the new shape though. but i think they have definitly taken a step back by deciding to icnrease the size by such a factor.

Apple is just up to date with fashion isn't it? Here comes a year of skinny anorexic-looking gadgets.
(If this is by anyway real, Apple's lawyer would have Gizmodo pull this off days ago, so, We'll see.....)

This is fake.. Look at the photoshopped "light glares" on the right of the case, and where is the reflection from the LCD screen? Finally why is it when they show these "spy" shots they are always blurry---this is a big time fake.
