Toshiba Satellite E105 Is a Big Fan of the MacBook Pro
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 10:00 PM on September 30, 2008
Toshiba's Satellite E105 is almost run-of-the-mill as far as new notebooks go—Centrino 2, latest Intel Core 2 Duo processors, 4GB of RAM, integrated graphics (boo), HDMI out—but a couple of things make it stand out. What instantly struck me is that the silhouette—which you can see more of below—is obviously inspired by the MacBook Pro.
And if the resemblance doesn't smack you in these pictures, it definitely does in person. Toshiba's even reps confessed to it (to the extent that PR people admit anything). So yeah, it's a sharply designed, if vaguely familiar-looking, notebook, with the lid and black stripe slathered across the middle just enough to make it Toshiba's own.
The other thing of note is the size—14 inches in widescreen, which isn't so common right now. But it will be, says Toshiba, because LCD panel makers are pushing it as one of the new standards. It's actually a pretty solid one too, since it gives you a good balance of actual portability and screen bigness, and 2.3kg isn't too much to carry. Lastly, it comes with Vista Home 64-bit, so it looks like the 64-bit push from consumer computer makers is finally here.

Sure if a Macbook Pro had a love child with a Sony Vaio...
Sure, there's some styling elements of the macbook pro hidden under that plasticy facade.

Really? you think it looks like the Macbook Pro? Maybe that's because IT'S A FREAKIN LAPTOP! My Laptop looks kinda like a Macbook pro... or maybe.. The Macbook pro looks like My laptop! Haha! Thats it! Apple copied my laptop! Wow I feel so special now...
Not a bad machine. Toshibas are very reliable (more so than Macbook pros). We almost exclusively use toshiba laptops in my office and trust me, I've seen a tecra bounce down a flight of stairs and still work perfectly. (Ok it was full of scratches, but it worked.)

I'm agreed with most of the commenters here:
This doesn't particularly look like a MacBook.
-keyboard and trackpad are off centered
-entirely different keyboard
-it's two tone
-ports on front
-speaker grills on front
-totally different hinge system
I mean basically the only real similarity is the proportions and that it is a bit more squared off than most laptops.... and that's where the similarities end.

@baltwade: And especially considering the comments posted after mine, it seemed tame by comparison. At least I could read theirs, mine was immediately de-voweled. Mine was taking a joking look at what was obviously going to show up here in the comments considering the article. que sera sera

Is it just me - or does anybody else find the combination of integrated video - and an HDMI out an odd combination?
I guess I was just assuming that if you're going to hook it up to your HDMI capable TV - you'd probably want something with a little more video "oomph" than integrated graphics would give you.
but that's just me.

I'd say the closest contender for a Macbook sibling is the HP Mini Note laptop. Anyone with a 12" Powerbook can definitely see the similarities.

I'm agreed with the poster. When compared to my Toshiba (a laptop I have for work) or my old Dell, it shares many uncommonly similar elements:
- ratio of track pad to keyboard to blank real estate on the notebook body
- the shape & radius of the rounded edges on the body (particularly the body edge that faces the user)
- silver tone looks to be the mbp aluminum silver (as opposed to the plastic silver in use by many manufactures)
- a slimmer, level silhouette
[When will the blind hatred of PC v. Mac end? Can't we all just get along?]

@Kaiser-Machead: I am still using my six year old 12" Powerbook and the HP Nini Note definitely looks like a long lost relative with its overall shape and keyboard extending all the way to the edges of the base. The G4 isn't as light weight but the small form factor, good design, and optical drive make it a better than average netbook/UMPC/etc.

I am really not seeing the MacBook pro resemblence. I mean aside from the difference in form factor, port locations, hinge type, media buttons, Disc tray, speakers, etc... It's is pretty much the same right?
So all notebooks that don't have a thick back and thin front = MacBooks?
Also sad face to integrated graphics :(

This reminds me a LOT of the Monster Cable/Blue Jean Cable debacle.
Wow. Look at that! A simple looking laptop that has a screen, hinge, and a keyboard! Must be a macbook copy because everyone knows apple is king!
Put an apple/fruit on the lid, then I'll accept the validity of this claim.

Jesus CHRIST.
Apple. Ok. Apple is good. But let's just say, somebody comes up with a laptop that looks similar to a Macbook. No big deal right? I mean, the common functions of a laptop somewhat set guidelines for which basic designs should follow. Just because they went with a fairly simplistic shell doesn't mean it had to be inspired by the macbook. Ok? So pull your head out of Job's ass, and start looking at products for what they are rather than what apple product they resemble most.
