T-Mobile Restricting 3G Data Usage to 1GB a Month Without Penalty
Posted by Sean Fallon at 6:22 AM on September 24, 2008
If you examine the fine print on T-Mo's G1 launch page, you will find an interesting bit of information with regard to 3G usage. Apparently, they will be soft-capping data to a slim 1GB a month max in each billing cycle. If you exceed the maximum, the powers that be will strike you down to an anorexic 50 kbps or less until the next cycle begins. Obviously, that is completely intolerable for a power user and apt to send them into a fit of rage. We will just have to wait and see if this policy is actually enforced. [T-Mobile]

So, does this pretty much put the kibosh on sites like Hulu? Any idea how much you download watching a typical half hour on there?

This is titled to only affect 3G. As long as I still get unlimited Internet access on EDGE, I'm fine. It's not really "slow" after you get used to it.

That's crazy 1gb? I mean cmon they have to be able to support more than that, I mean what's up? Can the workers at t-mobile not download their gay porn fast enough if everyone is using more than 1gb? jeezus

I was psyched all day on this device/new initiative from TMob and its quickly fading.
1Gb cap is unacceptable. $179 is for NEW customers. Being and old, paying, trusted, loyal customer, I pay $299 with the same 2 year terms. And $35 is for sure a step up as Mr. Black mentioned, as I am on a similar plan (unlimited family text and data)
I knew it was too good to be true.

@Odd_Thomas: That'll be great when the Touch HD comes out on Sprint, right? Glad I didn't succumb to AT&T and give up my SERO plan. That $150 discount should hit next spring, and I'll have my Touch HD then.

Emailing and occasional web surfing should end up less than 1GB/month. Tethering however, will blow that wide open.

I spoke to a Sprint associate at a store who told me that sprint does not keep track of the 5gb limit and will not take action against you if you infact go over.

This makes AT&T and Verizon's 5GB cap very generous. Also, keep in mind that other countries have even less cap than 1GB for most plans.

Currently I pay $29.99 for Total Internet & Family messaging...so this ends up being $35, just for me, with severely limited internet? It seems T-mobile is taking pricing cues from AT&T, and not for the better!

Ah you mean the new T-Mobile Andriod deal isnt all its cracked up to be?
There are no free lunches.
Oh an i will gladly eat my words when they can really run andriod seamlessly on the many hardware platforms.
This will fail.....it will be great for the true power users and those willing the screw with it. For the vast majority of people Andriod will be nothing but FAIL.
Thats my prediction....lets see whos right!

Man, these company's are killing me with these caps. I have a sidekick LX and I get unlimited email and text for $20 a month, its EDGE but it goes pretty fast. If they eventually release an OTA that enables 3G and we have to change our data plans, I will not be installing the update, haha.

Nice job Google and T-Mobile. You build all this hype about the next generation of smartphones, applications from and for the masses, and then you smack a cap on it like this, in the fine print no less. Way to launch a "groundbreaking" and "revolutionary" product.
"Hey, our new 3G network is wicked fast, like the Autobahn. Oh, except if you go 100 miles per hour for more than 10 miles in a month, we'll slap you down to the right hand lane where you'll be stuck behind grandma going 45 mph with her left hand turn signal perpetually on."

Its not that big of a deal even if you DO have 3G, since, most sites one might visit dont need 3G, and mixing it with wifi, it may not be that bad.. THOUGH, its still unlimited data, capping 3G, is caca.... bastidz!
PS.. ordered mine! as 299 though!

This makes me thankful for my Rogers (Read: BEND OVER!) plan with my iphone, $30/month for 6GB data, which to be honest is pretty rediculous. I try and try, upload pics, browns internet all the time, use email, and even stream audio at least 2-3 hours a day and all i manage to hit is 1.5 at most.

I've got an iPhone contract in Germany.
The second most expensive one for the ridiculous amount of €70,- per month.
And I have a 1GB cap.
I haven't hit the 1GB mark, yet, but this is only because i only had the contract for a month before I went to China. (my usage was around 800MB)
A friend of mine had to endure the speed reduction, though.
In Germany they do enforce the speed limitation.
The most ridiculous thing about this:
They call it a flatrate...

@Odd_Thomas:
Even though their phones have tended to SUCK - Sprint is by far the cheapest for unlimited data plans and cheap minutes plans. I'm one of those users that only uses 100 talk minutes a month or so but uses a ton of data and Sprint is cheaper by about half over Verizon or ATT.

what a joke! 50 kbps is slower than EDGE!
I love t-mobile for the free tethering and no data cap - I easily run 1-2 GB a month with tethered usage over EDGE connections... if they are going to start throttling and being a pain I may as well start looking at other carriers

@Rolcol: I think any user would be hard pressed to hit the 1GB cap on EDGE, so that's probably why it wouldn't apply.
I easily go through 3-4GB/month on my Death Star 3G.

Just to clean up some messy information about this phone. One guy said the phone for current customer is going to be more. This is NOT correct current customers well be getting the same deal as brand new starting. Reason why he can't get the phone for 179 because he still half way into his contract agreement. Any current customer that is at the end or close by few months well get the 179. Price after mail-in. Also T-mobile well NOT be putting hard cap on 1GIB downloads but soft cap if the network starts to be running slow or effecting call quality well they do that. A lot of folks are saying that T-mobile is starting to act like ATT or Verizon with data plans but we are still the cheapest around and always be. Our data plans aren't 60.00 month like others are.....
