T-Mobile G1 Sold Out, Pre-order Ends
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 3:05 AM on September 28, 2008
If you were thinking about pre-ordering the T-Mobile G1 and just didn't get around to it yet, it looks like you're out of luck, since they've sold out. While there definitely won't be anything like iPhone launch day madness, don't be surprised if the launch supply is exhausted by demand and they're a bit scarce in the immediate aftermath. How many of you guys pre-ordered one? Update: Looks like it's back up. [Android Community]

I did pre-order a G1 phone. I am eagerly awaiting the 22nd to get here. I can not wait to see what all the hype is about. I have always wanted an iPhone-like phone from T-Mobile.

@CutePuppyz: You mean generate enough demand that their supply is low and you have to produce faster than all the competition to get close to maybe satisfying demand?

I think this may just be a scheme to try and convince people someone wants this new phone.
If it's sold our many people must be buying it! (even if they only had 1 planned)

-cause I'm not overly impressed with the users thus far.

@tenio:
I don't know if this is officially confirmed because people have said it is still there as an presale option in my.tmobile. I'm an android fan, but I agree this might just be something to drive demand. But they have been in shorter stock it seems and if you read the article they don't have the white one avaliable right now b/c of issues with the paint. Can't really say much since I don't think T-mobile confirmed this.

Lame. I tried to pre-order, but as a recent monthly subscriber, I don't qualify to "upgrade". Not sure why not. . . it seems T-Mobile would WANT to lock me into a 2 year contract. Their loss. I hope to hear about other upcoming Android phones before the G1 actually hits the streets. . . might motivate me to wait a bit longer.

I have Tmob, and am waiting till you all get yours and hear what the good and bad is on day to day use before I bite. No early adopters remorse for me thank you very much! I'm also going to wait and see what the reviewers have to say before I budge, just like I have with both iPhone's up until now (I've avoided buying either because of lacking key features up until now). No biggie for me if the pre-sale is over!

This is only on the dedicated G1 site. You can still preorder through my.tmobile.com, only time will tell if they're actually fulfilled or not.

Yeah, I ordered a black one the first day. For those of us on T-Mobile there's a huge offering of phones like the G1 or the iPhone.
I figure at $179 it's worth trying. I'm hoping on the actual receipt it will say I have 30 days to return it. That's more than enough time to find out how good or bad it is. If not, I'll put it on ebay and try to get most of my money back.
If it sucks too bad, I'll keep it for the 90 days that they say you have to wait to have it unlocked. That will surely help it sell better on ebay if I don't like it.

I actually got to play with the G1 tonight and it's actually quite nice. It sits well in the hand, and actually feels a little better than my iPhone (at least to me). The iPhone is nice because it's thin, however it's wide. The G1 is narrower, but thicker...but not overly thick. Also, I was surprised to see that the screens are about the same size. I never really noticed that the speaker and home buttons on the iPhone take up as much space as they do. The keyboard is great, and seems to be really easy to type with, especially since the keys are spaced like they are on a keyboard (not directly above each other). I am happy that I pre-ordered mine at this point.
I must say that the one I used (white) was pretty ugly in my opinion. I think the black one looks much nicer. The phone is built really solidly, though, and doesn't feel cheap.

Keep supply low for a higher demand nice move google.
See the people will come into the store and ask if a lot of people have gotten the G1 and the sales rep will say they're sold out =/ sorry. And people will think so hey i'll just get that 3G flip phone which basically no1 knows about but they do know its nice has a big screen and is new. Then they'll think it over and come back for the G1. GO GOOGLE GO!!!! Just get a better UI and unfortunate to say but im scared to change my wing because of the cons of the G1 as well as i want a Touch Pro as well as im still hoping some kick ass phone like the xperia x1 will come out soon.

i played with G1 last night here in NYC. A friend of a friend is a big wig at Google. Anyway, it feels real nice and has good weight. The mechanism slides open quick and easy and the keyboard is easy to use. I currently have an iPhone and i still think the touch aspect is better with apple, but in the long run, android looks much more flexible. i will pass on this version, but i was told there will be many interesting options on the future...we'll see...

@Echelondagod: Apologies for the late reply--I forgot I wrote this. I actually liked the interface a lot. I didn't even realize the lack of multitouch--I guess because I don't really multitouch as often as maybe some others do.
I also like the dedicated buttons, suprisingly. The overall interface didn't seem that difficult to navigate; however, I'm a techie (like most on this site) and I can't really say how the average user will like it. It seemed pretty intuitive to me, though. The only point that I got confused was when i tried to send a text message (to myself): I couldn't figure out where to touch to get the cursor to start typing. There was the address bar at the top where I put in the target phone number, then a lot of white space, then a single-line text box at the bottom. For some reason, I was clicking in the large white space in the middle, thinking it was where I would type the message. Once I figured it out, it was no problem though...ha.
I must say, though, that the operating system is very fast and responsive. I was actually really happy to see that, however I don't know how it would handle my contact list. My contacts kinda freeze up on my iPhone (even after the 2.1 update...just not as badly). I've got something like 600+ contacts, but it's really only listing their names, so I don't know what the delay is all about. Here's to hoping the G1 handles that better.

actually, there are several devices coming out between now and the end-of-the-year (several announcements on official 3G launch day), and, even more toys between now and Q1 of 2009, after which the new toy supply will dry up a bit @PCLoadLetter:
