T-Mobile Android Event Live Tomorrow
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 7:30 AM on September 23, 2008
The world's first Android phone, made by HTC for T-Mobile, is officially a go tomorrow morning, and we'll be bringing it to you live. The event officially kicks off at 10:30AM Eastern--7:30AM if you're on the West Coast, ahahaha--but the doors open at 10, and we'll be getting there even earlier. The liveblog will be at the usual spot, where the updates will be superfast and stocked with the prettiest liveblog pics around, as always. To get you primed and up to speed, here's a roundup of everything we know:
•It'll be $US199 and have a low-cost data plan—the "heavy Google branding" says G1 more so than Dream
•It looks like this (and this)
•It'll be out in October
•Bluetooth is crippled, and it's missing Google Talk
•There will be lotsa location-based apps
•The Android app market will be totally open
•The Android OS will look something like this
•It could help Google profile you
•Five reasons to be excited, and five not to be

I can't wait for tomorrow, and then October. I'm starting to feel guilty about my hacked iPhone.
Okay, not really, but the Dream does look like it might be worth switching for.
Also: I love the new comments, Giz, but what's with the forthcoming ability to login with your Facebook account? Are Facebook and Gwaker merging?

It won't mess with the iPhone market, but it will sure throw in a monkey wrench for RIM/Symbian and WMobile.

I hope Android is amazing. But it's really going to have to be super amazing to make it worth moving on from the iPhone. I have a feeling I'm going to be underwhelmed?
Either way I support Google taking over the planet, and this seems like a good notch in their belt.

OK... Early adopters form a line to the left... And remember! In 30 days report back to Dusty and give him your thoughts on the Android phone.

I'm gonna wait this one out for a few reasons. 1.) To give Apple some time to redeem themselves and to get their act together and maybe not be total Nazis and release more good stuff for the iPhone (so that I don't go jumping the gun and ditch my iPhone for this). 2.) Wait to see if Android lives up to its expectations. 3.) Wait for an Android phone to come to my carrier.

FYI, Bluetooth is in. Only the API's are out. No word on Google Talk though. There are a lot of websites reporting no bluetooth for some reason. This just isn't the case.

I'm very interested in this. Looks promising. I had an ipod touch, then upgraded to an iphone that i bought for $100 and used it over the summer for 2 months. Then sold the iphone and i am currently using a generic cellphone and a 1st gen ipod shuffle.

If my T-Mobile plan is at a point where it won't hurt my wallet too much then I may just shell out and give it a try. I had the Shadow but didn't like the NEO interface so I sold it to a buddy of mine and bought the HTC Wing. A couple cooked ROM's later and I'm bored again...so we'll see.
Looking forward to the liveblog tomorrow. Would the masters of Giz be able to confirm the inclusion of a traditional headphone port? Also internal memory and max for external cards please?

"Did you guys see that crazy rumor they'd only be selling the g1 where they have 3g? No one would confirm yet, but it was mentioned that'll be 80 percent of T-MO's base by year end" They better release this phone to all of their customers. Cincinnati is getting no love for their 3G network.

I thought there was just a big food emporium under there. Amazing they stuck a TMobile store there too. And is that grass? Actual grass in NYC ? The best part about that place it its proximity to bed bath and beyond. The vertical one with special escalators for your shopping cart.... where u can overpay for mighty putty and cheap towels...

the potential is there , just look at the jailbroken apple community and all the software that will never see the apple app store.
but it will take time for devs to make the jump. how much? wishful thinking is somewhere between half a year and longer to get things fully running.
around which phones that fully utilize android will be out , so theres definately a hesistant nature.

Do I have to have a data plan when I get the phone? Or can I just use wifi?
If I want to send a text message, do I have to have a data plan? Or, since I'm already paying $5 for unlimited texting, can I just use the text messaging plan I already have?

I have a few questions that weren't answered by the press conference, or I was distracted with work.
1) Do you have to have a data plan? I was planning on just using wifi.
2) Do you have to have the data plan to send text messages? I'm already paying $5 for unlimited text. Does this mean I will no longer need to?

there is only one open source project that has ever partially worked with exchange, and it didnt work well, and that is evolution, and its functionality is limited. mobile me is the only other thing i know of that is not made by MS. The MS api for exchange is completely lacking and makes it imposible to develop for. I mean people can sync emails and folders using IMAP, and contacts can be grabed using mapi i have seen that done before, but sharing calendars, good luck finding someone who can figure that out.
