This Week In Blu-ray: Every Which Way But Loose Bolts Edition
Posted by Mark Wilson at 8:00 AM on September 3, 2008
Giz pick of the week: Transformers (Two Disc Special Edition)
It was the thorn in Blu-ray's side. Transformers, otherwise known as the 80s cartoon manifestation of geekdom, was HD DVD only. Well luckily for Blu-ray owners, HD DVD died a violent death and they got their Megatron fix after all. While this two-disc set won't offer anything extra over what was released last year on HD DVD, all of the special features have been ported to the new format along with the same, pristinely encoded video.
Here are the rest of this week's Blu-ray releases, including this week's runner up, Every Which Way But Loose:
•Black Mask (Lionsgate)
•Cirque du Soleil: Corteo (Sony)
•Eraser (Warner)
•Every Which Way But Loose (Warner)
•The Gauntlet (Warner)
•The Invincible Iron Man (Lionsgate)
•Marine Aquarium (BCI)
•Married Life (Sony)
•Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow (Lionsgate)
•Outbreak (Warner)
•Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles (FUNimation)
•Transformers (2007) (Paramount)
•Under Siege 2: Dark Territory (Warner)
Yeah, I just may have to be a stereotype of my demographic and pick Transformers up. [hidefdigest]

That list reads like the contents of the "4 for $20" list. It's still crap, just higher-resolution crap.

"all of the special features have been ported to the new format"
Does that include the downloadable content that HD DVD had? Is this a strict spec 2.0 disc?

New article for tomorrow: Awesomeness of transformers movie cannot be contained. Needs 2 discs!
It's a pretty sad state for technology when blu-ray JUST became the next big thing and it already feels outdated by not having enough storage space. Didn't i hear somewhere they could expand it to 300gigs? If transformers 2 is any indication, it'll take 10 blu-ray discs just to put the movie out. AWESOMENESS!

Why 2 discs? Lossless audio takes a LOT of space. If all of the special features are on disc 2 and nothing but high bitrate video and lossless audio are on disc 1 I will be a VERY happy camper!

Anyway, if it has a physical medium, I'm not buying.

If you are considering buying just remember the stupidity of the scene where they were looking for the glasses in the house..that horrendous scene wouldn't end.
Also try and recall any of the battle between the Optimus and the bad dude. It was all out of focus and behind the boring conversations screaming about running fast.
There I saved you $40.

It would be GREAT if I could mail in my HD DVD version and $5 bucks and get the Blu Ray edition, given that I ALREADY OWN THE LICENSE TO THE FLICK!
Given movie house and RIAA focus on owning the license, you'd think they'd provide some positive enticement here, but oh yeah, they don't value the customer. I forgot.

"yes, excuse me? I actually was silly enough to buy into a doomed format. Yes, I know, it was dumb. Anyway, I was hoping you would compensate my stupidity with a reduced cost for a movie that will actually work in players made in 5 years. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!" :p

Actually, Blu-Ray edition of Transformers has uncompressed audio instead of DD+ and more foreign language tracks as well as PiP commentary from Michael Bay.

I thought the Matrix was a much more important exclusive for HD-DVD. This Transformers movie kind of sucked. Let's have the real Transformers movie and The Return of Optimus Prime transferred to HD.

A little off topic, sorry, but was last weeks "Nightmare Before Christmas" BD release a Standard Definition release, but on Blu-ray?... Standard like 480i/p standard (If thta's the case I didn't know that they did that on BD)? I was looking at it on Amazon a few days ago since Giz's announcement of it and seriously considering purchasing it, and was a little thrown by the listing. I looked around online, and swear that it is in fact a "standard Definition Movie", just on a BD, am I right?... Anyone? Thanks, and sorry for the off topic post.

Transformers(2007) is the best movie on Blu-Ray yet. Both Picture and Sound quality.
If you have watched this, you won't bitch about the 2-blu-ray-disc thing.

@Ambiguous Blob 2.0: The Blu-ray edition is in 1080p. They also include a digital copy that's in standard definition. Maybe that's what threw you.

I already have the HD-DVD version. Its a waste of money to buy a 1:1 port.
With the LG Super Drive in my Media Center, I don't have a "failed format".

If only Transformers didn't suck.
My friends ask me: "Puddn', why don't you like the movie? Didn't you grow up watching the cartoon series?". To which I reply "Yes, I did watch Transformers as a kid. That's why I hate the movie".

@Pool2099: Not really a 1:1.
Probably 1:1.2 :)
But yeah, why would you buy the blu-ray version if you already have the HD-DVD version ? Unless if you're collecting blu-ray titles and doesn't care about money.

@Rusdude: Actually, the Blu-Ray has the following thing the HD-DVD doesn have:
* Lossless compressed (English) audio (Dolby TrueHD is lossless compression)
That's it.
The HD-DVD has everything the Blu-Ray has otherwise. All the PIP commentary and crap already existed on the HD-DVD. The only thing otherwise is the 7 Sector Seven videos, which instead of being downloadable (HD-DVD), are on the disc (disc 2, easter egg - go to Settings, highlight None, then press Right, and click the cube).
This time last year, the Blu-Ray version would've sucked horribly, but at least with profile 1.1/2.0 players being common, it at least could equal the HD-DVD.
Supposedly the picture quality is the same, though, strangely enough.
(Yes, I have both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray versions).
