The Styrobot Wants to Rule Your Cups and Packaging
Posted by Mark Wilson at 10:45 PM on September 3, 2008
There's really nothing great that can be done with Styrofoam other than not produce it in the first place, but in lieu of recycling it or throwing it away, one man and his son, inspired by this artwork, took 5 years worth of Styrofoam packaging and did the next most logical thing—built a giant robot.
Assembled from 5 main pieces sliced with a foam cutter and held together with silicon seal, the limbs fit the torso as if they're sitting on a shelf (requiring no additional adhesive for easy assembly/disassembly). Also of note: this styrobot only weighs nine kilos. Just don't tell the neighbours, because they sorta think he's real. [KK via MAKE]

@strider_mt2k: Is that why styrofoam doesn't break down. Because, like Arnie, it cannot self-destruct.
I never thought I'd say this - for the sake of the planet, we need Edward Furlong.

@Keebler: And then your cat will attack it, leaving little pellets all over your living room rug.

I like at the end of the movie when it gets lowered into that big vat of nail polish remover and does a thumbs up as it goes under.
Awesome.

I've got about 80 pieces of large EPP (expanded polypropylene, stryofoam is EPstyrene) in my garage just waiting to do something like this... I'm inspired :D

"...'styrofoam' should never have been made..." - blasphemy.
How will future cultures know our innermost dreams and passions other than by seeing old big mac packages; computer box spacers; and floaty, pool recliner chairs. Let us elevate the humble foam to 'Lego' status...

If companies could make components of their packaging lego together into giant robots it would be pretty sweet.

I can kill you with this cup. I will smash it into you until the little beads impale into your blood stream causing you to clot and die of a heart attack!!
Death by styrofoam it shall be!!

Polystyrene Foam, it's white gold. And the best thing is, they pay you by the pound.

As was mine. It's ok, the kid will be 13 soon, he'll figure it out then.

@Holyelephant: I was going to mention that guy. Same thing, only better, bigger. I saw that piece at a museum in San Jose. It's really that big, and it's really difficult to resist jumping into it to see what would happen.

This guy labels his own bookshelves? What's up with that? Does he live in a library or something?

@wjousts: Judging by the VCT on the floor, this is on display in either a school, a library, or other "institution of learning". I miss the Dewey Decimal System.

Nonsense. Dewey was a fool!
Thanks to his Decimal System, cataloged neatly with these hole-punched index cards, all of the knowledge of the world will soon be mine.

I built Styrofoam robots when I was a kid. I thought that was a mandatory part of growing up, like building forts and catching grasshoppers.

Actually, Styrofoam, and the Styrobot, can be recycled: [www.epspackaging.org] - at least according to the The Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers. You may have heard of their battles against the Empire of People Who Just Throw $hit Away.
