The Most Realistic Unboxing of All Time
Posted by Mark Wilson at 4:30 AM on September 16, 2008
Product unboxings are generally sterile affairs, boiled down to Hollywoodesque over-simplicity, ignoring blister packs and steel-impervious plastic for magically opened, perfectly photographed gadgets. Well, here's a real unboxing made for the rest of us. And to the average male Giz reader, the clip evokes the same vicarious pain of watching a guy get kicked in the stones. [via TUAW]

Typical Unboxing.
I'll be sure to make one for the iPod and focus more on the Box then the actual iPod.

After a minute I was expecting him to start biting the box and jump on the table like a chimpanzee.

The easiest way to open those annoying packages without sharp tools? Have a lighter ready! heat up the plastic and tear/cut/bite away (Just dont poison, burn or maim yourself in the process)

OK... really, that doesn't look so hard to open.
Probably the typical guy that opens a bag of chips and the whole thing explodes all over the place.
I do agree that some toys come in packets that feel more like ABS plastic used in the auto industry.

This kind of packaging is a breeze to open compared to those idiotic molded thick plastic things most USB flash drives, memory cards and stuff like that come in. Especially if you buy a memory card that you need to use right away and have no knives or scissors handy. Ugh... My teeth and fingers hurt even thinking about it

Yeah... I was also expecting him to cut himself... :P
I had far worse unboxing, only I didn't video it regretably.
The last hard plastic unboxing I did I remember very well making a deep cut on my index finger. Scar is still there... if I'm not mistaken, it was some sort of cable.

The worst is the costco packaging. You buy a fuckin thumb drive the size of a key and you have to battle with 3 feet of super sealed ultra plastic that requires a fuckin powersaw to open but you still can't avoid it pinching your god damn skin or cutting into your fingers causing you to bleed all over the floor until you finally rip the damn thing open so hard you smash your fist into the wall denting your new paint and breaking 3 fingers. But at least I got it for 10 fuckin dollars cheaper than from best buy!

I've had a similar experience opening an iPod charger I bought from Best Buy. I'm relatively sure that whatever glue Apple uses to put the plastic-hook on the top gets really really sticky over time and becomes virtually unmovable. I definitely destroyed the entire box trying to get at the charger.

@adhir: They have 15 or 16 pairs of those steel threaded twisty ties (so you can't cut them) that are spun with a machine so you need needlenose pliers to untwist them. Then, I've noticed on a lot of things, they have big thick plastic things SCREWED IN TO THE TOY USING METAL MACHINE SCREWS! Seriously, wtf is up with that?
@Neone: I found even the best packaging (short of kids toys mentioned above) is to use just a really sharp hunting knife. Why do I know this? I worked in retail, and was frequently the person to find cut open boxes.

LOL - come on guys - this dude is making an important point. Never mind that the apple remote is easy to open. I don't have this problem. I noticed the difficulty when I bought products form apply with similar a similar box. I just whip out the old swiss army knife and cut through the plastic. What really pisses me off is when I buy DVD's. I get so many and sometimes they come with 3 security tapes. WTF!

@trekkie: yes - i figured that would be the response. i'm decidedly not a packaging engineer. yet, i've opened enough packages to know good packaging when i see it. for robosapien/raptor/etc, the metal twistie ties are not it. foam with a roboraptor shaped cutout would have worked as well and not driven parents and their children to fits on christmas morning.

Go to Costco, purchase one of their gaming bundle packs, the ones with the console and a game and a controller. Anything short of a SWAT entry team will not get you in. Not to mention the new action figures are near impossible with the twisty ties and those super small clear rubber bands.

@adhir:
when you ship stuff in a boat it vibrates a lot. To keep it in place you spot weld them to the packaging.
The other reason is fuckers that steal and deserve to DIAF. They were poking into packaging and swiping pieces of the set ruining toys for all the kids. So they weld them in place.
It sucks, and this is how the industry tried to combat those two problems.

I don't _EVER_ want to be so tech-savvy that I become a gibbering monkey when it comes to opening a simple box. There are proper tools for everything, and scissors are _NOT_ the right tool for this job. That's just what people who have no clue what they're doing use.
For a box, you _cut_ the tape with a shop knife or a box cutter (don't use your kitchen knives because you probably won't want to find yourself eating tape goo a week later). For the plastic clamshells, there's usually an "innie" side and an "outie" side around the outside edge where it's heat-sealed. On the "innie" side, drop a knife point into the 90 degree corner and cut _three_ sides of the package open. After that, it's not terribly hard to pull the flap open so you can get at the tasty goodies inside.
@Kaiser-Machead on the Edge:
Send me one, and I'll send you video of me doing it in under a minute. Guaranteed. And no hospital trips necessary. You see, I do have the proper tools for opening boxes, blister packs, and pretty much anything an object might come commercially packaged in. And I know how to use them safely. 15 years of shop experience, and no missing body parts, nor any major at-fault injuries.
@adhir:
I guess you're not the one who vacuums your house, or you'd know why foam packaging is much hated (y'know, aside from the bad-for-the-environment thing).
@innout3x3:
I've actually gotten pretty good at peeling those off in one piece. Even the ones that are designed to tear apart when you try to do that so you can't reseal the case after opening it. Alternately, if they're that much trouble, you could always slit them right down the middle (the DVD case even provides a nice handy groove to guide your knife blade).

Everyone can thank big box retailers for the state of packaging security. Stores like Wal-Mart now mandate that manufacturers (of high dollar merch) who want to sell their product at Wal-Mart MUST use sealed, tamper resistant (proof) packaging. It is a theft issue.
So really you can thank the shoplifters.
