The Most Artsy Slow-Mo Gadget Smash Video Ever Features Axe, MacBook Pro
Posted by Jason Chen at 11:30 AM on September 12, 2008
We were so over videos that smash gadgets—it's douchey, amateur, and nothing we want to condone—until we saw this. This, my friends, has go to be the most "artsy" gadget smash video we've ever seen. That's along the same lines as crowning the tallest dwarf, the fastest minivan or the least slutty member of the Kardashian family, but it's something. Watch and see, then hit the jump for a blooper.

"I spent $2000 on a MacBookPro but was too cheap to buy the warranty. So when the logic board (or something really expensive) crapped out I decided to make a cool video instead of shipping it out under Apple's flat-rate facilitation repair for only a few hundred dollars."

That blooper reminds me of when Gimli tried to hack the One Ring to bits with his axe. With the Macbook just sitting there normally and the poor guy getting owned... smoke clearing... the eerie music...

If this would get trimmed down a bit, the music revised to sound just a bit more sad and mushy, and the text "Have you ever seen a grown man cry?" superimposed before the shots of the MacBook getting beheaded, this would make for a wonderful Apple ad.
I'm serious. Transgressive art holds a load of untapped potential in the advertising industry.

But why? Throwing away good money seems retarded. Even if it was dead, it's still worth it's weight in parts.
I'm not saying this because I'm a Mac fan, but I just don't see the point.

Why? Seriously, why? I can understand smashing an old car (that's going to the crusher anyway) to relieve tension and stress. That makes sense. There's no additional waste, and something comes out of it.
This just wastes decent parts that could revive other MacBook Pros. Had it been a laptop that had no hope of being parted out to fix another, or was doomed to be crushed in some other manner anyway, then I'd have no gripe. But I can guarantee that the MacBook Pro still has a market for parts. Artsy or not, I disapprove (not that it matters).

And for those who don't know, the flat-rate repair program will fix anything wrong with the laptop, even it's Apple's super pricey $800+ logic board for just $3-500 depending on model. Accidental damage is NOT covered under this plan, so they will not do it if you do [or just charge you $1000 in order to fix the cosmetics, which would be mandatory]. Also, older machines are not covered [about 5 years or older].

1. The 30fps look is distracting, please convert to 24fps. Also, the overall pacing wanes. Please use a variable speed effect to prevent this.
2. Sound effects are tired, as are flashes/jump cuts - needs more thought.
3. The location has no production value. Please submit a list of options for a reshoot.
4. Main character has no sex appeal/style, looks very 1990's cliche. Need to recast with an attractive female?
5. The overall metaphor is a bit muddled. David and Goliath? Who is who here? Who has ultimately triumphed? From my perspective it could go both ways. message here needs to be fleshed out and clarified.
6. Not sure and axe vs. a Macbook really provides the epic battle we're looking for. To easy to break apart. Consider revising with a Mac Pro or Apple storefront. Bonus if you axe Justin Long!
Please get back to me with a new script and shooting schedule asap. We'll cover some of the more nit-picky notes (lighting/camera) after we nail the rest down.
I'll be leaving early on Friday to go to the lake house so please coordinate with my asst. asap.
Best.

My first comment just appeared 12 from the top. The machine had a few good parts harvested from it, but overall it was completely ruined by vomit.
Thanks for all the comments, I'm glad I could provide some entertainment. :-)

Hahaha, sweet, I'm the guy who made this. Just to put your hearts a bit at ease, the Macbook Pro had been vomited directly into, so the entire thing was hosed in terms of recovery (not to mention the health hazard of taking it all apart). Some good parts were salvaged, but it was headed for the garbage, so I rescued it and put it to a more dramatic use.

Haha. It's funny how people have said they cringe over watching a laptop get destroyed. I'll be honest I did a little bit too but then I realized...
It's a laptop. Yes it's an overpriced and expensive laptop but it's a laptop just the same. I liked this video because it made me think of how much I might be attached to my computers, tv, etc...
It seems that Mac users are more attached to their computers than PC users (probably because PC users have tons more problems.)
Anywho..I need to be e-mailing this off to my friends who use Mac's just to cause them some pain. Muhahahaha

If you were a real technician and really 23 you would know that vomit can be cleaned from ANYTHING! Maybe not the smell, but then again that wouldn't be as bad as the iBook G3/early G4 keyboard glue.

@madog: Indeed, vomit can be cleaned from just about anything non-porous, so the "shell" of the MBP was nearly salvageable; however, all of the electronics were extremely corroded due to the acid involved, and neither I nor anyone else involved wanted to risk catching some horrible ailment from the putrid slurry that had befallen the machine.
I wanted to rescue the LCD as well, but in transport from storage to the recycling truck, the LCD was damaged (you can see a big round "spot" on the LCD where it had failed on the video) and thus unrecoverable. I rescued it from the truck before it departed to the land of wind and ghosts.
I have had far more fun with it than would otherwise be possible with the money gained from selling it for parts, so I consider the sacrifice completely worthwhile.
