The Dark Knight Blu-ray: Crushing Nielsen Ratings December 9th
Posted by Mark Wilson at 3:45 AM on September 30, 2008
Rumours and logic speculated that Warner would release The Dark Knight in time for the holiday season, and the Blu-ray two-disc and collectible limited edition will indeed go on sale December 9th, the same day as the standard DVD release. The standard, two-disc edition will be Warner's first BD Live disc, and it'll pack all sorts of Baterrific extras. From HiDef Digest:
Extras included on the first disc also include "Gotham Uncovered: Creation of a Scene," a "focus points" version of the film containing behind-the-scenes vignettes with director Christopher Nolan and his team discussing the planning of the film, the use of IMAX photography, the stunts, and more.
Disc two will feature additional extras presented entirely in HD, including a pair of featurettes ("Batman Tech," "Batman Unmasked: The Psychology of the Dark Knight"), the "Gotham Tonight" collection of six episodes of the Gotham Cable's Premiere network, and "The Galleries," containing multiple still galleries, theatrical trailers and TV spots.
Apparently the collectible limited edition is exactly the same as the standard Blu-ray edition, except it'll come in fancy Bat Pod packaging.
The standard edition will retail for $US35.99 (though it'll probably hit shelves for less), while the premium edition has yet to be priced. On a completely unrelated note, Gizmodo will not be in service from December 9th until further notice. Our apologies. [HiDef Digest]

No directors cut or deleted scenes? Can't say there's much attraction to the special-edition in that case...

I have to say, I am getting a little tired of all of these Blu Ray releases promising us all these great features...BUT NOT INCLUDING A DIGITAL COPY.
Do they really think I'm going to pay $35 to watch Batman or Iron Man in Blu Ray on my PS3 AND another $10 for my iPhone?
I'll be stealing that sh|t...and I don't care who knows about it...including Paramount (I work for a Viacom company.)

Although for those of you who have not seen this movie (or Batman Begins, for that matter), this is not your average back-in-the-day Batman.

Posted 5:15 AM 30/9/08
@Jon B.: Dude, HandBrake works great...when you have a standard DVD. How do you propose that I use HandBrake to rip a copy from a Blu Ray disc? Not too many people have a Blu Ray drive on their pc/laptop, nor is the decryption to get passed the Blu Ray DRM as readily available as that of standard DVD.
So, I will have to buy the Blu Ray version and then either pay even more for a digital copy or I can rent/borrow a DVD copy and steal it.

question: how did they manage the different aspect ratios between regular film and imax? isn't imax square? I saw it on a widescreen, but was curious as to what I was missing from the imax frames (or what imax viewers were missing from the wide frames)

I'd almost guarantee there's a director's commentary - Nolan has them on every release of his movies, and they're fantastic to listen to. Batman Begins (BluRay) had it, too, as well as a lot of similar extras they mention here (like the featurettes on the tech/stunts/etc). I doubt, though, that there are any deleted scenes or alternate takes, as much as people may want to see more of the Ledger performance. Definitely a Day 1 purchase for me.

@The Chad: They just black-bar the top and bottom of the film...It's the same way they shoot 35mm anamorphic. The film is naturally 1.33 but the lens projects on just the center of the film...voila

Seriously, if they're planning a Blu Ray release of the LOTR trilogy all on one disk, why are all these companies wasting resources to print multiple disks? Man hours of translating the formatting onto a single disk can't possibly cost as much as the extra disk material, especially when you consider the additional cost of shipping for the extra weight, not to mention the ecological ramifications of the waste and excess gas for shipping millions of copies. Idiots.
