Teeny Web Server is Smaller Than a Business Card, and Way More Useful
Posted by Kit Eaton at 12:15 AM on September 27, 2008
Hackaday's running a cute little electronics project at the mo (well, if you think electronics can be cute) which shows you how to build a fully working web server on a circuit board no bigger than a business card, in plan at least. It's capable of serving up web pages and files and instead of using tricky-to-access EEPROMs it runs from code stored on a FAT-formatted SD card—easily accessible by PC. Check it out: it's pretty fascinating, and is a project you can follow...assuming you're darn good at delicate soldering work, and are into DIY electronics. Just don't go sewing the board to any clothing. [Hackaday via BBG]

I don't have the soldering skills needed to make this, but if you put a nice brushed aluminum case around it I would totally buy one.

I would say plan view, not profile view (sorry, Civil Engineer nerd)...

and it has a skull and crossbones etched into the board. which gives it +9000 points

@GHETTO.CHiLD: me too, considering this shouldn't be expensive i think

So when can we run web servers from our cellphones?

@Wandel: exactly what i was going to say, it installs apache or tomcat or something. Hello people, the iPhone is running unix! I don't exactly understand the purpose, maybe to share files with someone in your local area network. I bet there is a way to create an ad-hoc network too, but I don't know for sure.

@borgseawolf: Isn't there a web server app available for the iPhone?

That's pretty awesome. With the recent release of a 16GB Micro SD card that would be onehellofa website!

But, if I sew it into clothing, I can make new pickup lines.
"Hey baby, wanna connect to MY webserver?"
"Yeah, you can check your MySpace RIGHT HERE..."

Yeah this one is nice because of the flash memory but tiny web servers have been around for a few years now. [d116.com] and a few running a subset of Linux! much better than this 8bit PIC processor.

The iPhone app is called Air Sharing. It was free up until a couple days ago, now it's $6.99 I think. It's not a full web server, but it does have a file serving function that will run in any browser. I assume that would be the most common use for a mobile web server anyhow.
