Targus' Chill Mat For Macs Designed to Keep Your MacBook and Knees Cool
Posted by Kit Eaton at 10:30 PM on September 30, 2008
Generally I think "laptop coolers... meh" when I come across them, but the new Chill Mat from Targus—part of the new range for Macs—is actually a fairly sweet device. Mainly because it's just a simple mesh-top gizmo, that tilts your Mac to a more wrist-friendly position and it looks like it'd sit quite well, stylistically speaking, next to a MacBook (and yes, I'm one of those people who'd think about that.) It's got dual USB-powered fans to keep your Mac and knees chilled, and fits all Macbooks up the 17-inch Pro. Out now for $US50. [Targus]

Me thinks some fanboys will misread this as "I wasn't interested in laptop coolers but now there is one for Macs I am."

I don't know.
I'm kinda still waiting for the Zefyr Pro.
Unfortunately the guys over at moshi are pretty mum about a release date.

my macbook pro introduced me into the world of S&M. Why the hell would I want to give that up?

this is very relivent to my needs! now if they could only make a 12inch one, for my powerbook G4 12inch 1.33ghz! oh and i found a program to fix the burning of the lap problem... by turning on the internal fan on sooner. on fortunately the fix doesnt work with you new school macbook and macbook pro users.

If the Mac overheats because it's working hard (and I'm not saying that is the reason, just hypothesizing) then wouldn't a mat that runs off the computer's own power make that situation even worse?

the important question however is did targus make any effort to make the build quality on their chillmats even remotely decent? Guessing from the traditional shoddy barrel connector in the press photo, it'll have the same 3-5 month use life before major soldering needs to be employed to salvage the thing

I've been thinking about a cool pad. I'm taking courses for a few A+ certifications, and from what I've been reading, cooling pads are a must.
"...if you must use a laptop, refrain from setting your laptop upon solid surfaces (such as tables or desks) and avoid blocking the air vents by placing the computer on a bed for example. It's recommended that you use a cooling pad that elevates the laptop off of the surface you are typing on. Most times, laptops get so hot that your lap is not an option."
I think that's the first time I've ever heard: "Keep the laptop off of the table."

@rsquared: Not to mention MacBookPros only having two USB ports. Since this was being designed for Macs, couldn't they have used one of the firewire ports that I never use? Sheesh.

@SF_iris: Designed for Mac's means it's white and has rounded corners.

Go get SMC Fan Controller. My MBP doesn't get hot anymore.... just run the fan higher RPM when you're doing heavy lifting.
Shaved 20 degrees C off it.
