Stunning Desert Canyon Flight Scares the Underpants Off Me
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 6:30 AM on September 1, 2008
Once upon a time I wanted to be a fighter pilot, which is probably why I write so much about the biggest and baddest machines ever. My feeling then and now is that there's nothing that can match the thrill of flying one of the fastest, most expensive gadgets in the world almost at ground level through a desert canyon. Exactly like this french Mirage pilot does in this awesome video, which has Johnny Cash singing I've Been Everywhere as a extra.

I think its in one of the French airbase around Djibouti (is it?).
In any cases, it seems that their main occupation is doing cool stunts and posting them on Dailymotion or Youtube.

You know, this would be more impressive to me if I hadn't seen B-52's doing literally the same thing at Red Flag through the Nevada desert. Of course, if they went to 90° of bank at 75'AGL they'd drag a wingtip...

@pdok: Hit return before I could finish... From what I understand the B-52 pilot was flying the last flight of his loooooong career. He decided to hot dog it and dragged a wingtip, cartwheeled, and ground himself into meat patties mixed with little bits of metal. U.G.L.Y... and tragic.

Bold to do it in a Mirage 2000, you hear that they fly like wounded ducks with lead in their underpants at low altitude (due to the delta wing...) The pilots probably just bitter he didn't get a Rafale slot.

I;m not familiar with African deserts, so I can't rule out this being made in Djibouti or Algeria, but it may have also been made in Nevada. Every quarter or so, the USAF hosts NATO and other allied countries at Nellis Air Force Base near Las Vegas. The Nevada Test Range, where they train, is ginormous and full of rock features like the ones pictured, and nobody except a few coyotes and snakes will care about you flying through the canyons.

I spent one summer working in the northern forests of Canada (we're talking FAR north, up almost to the tundra line, past the 60th parallel). Anyways, I often had to fly by chopper to various regions (I was doing inventory on government property)... There were two pilots that my group used, and one of them was an ex French Combat Copter pilot, and that dude was amazing.
He'd take me down so close to the trees (while flying at top speed) that they'd brush against the bottom of the runners. He could do low speed maneuvers while looking for a good landing place that I still don't think are possible in a copter, and he did them while flying BACKWARDS.
The french have some amazing pilots!

British pilots are mad insane. Not your normal brand of insane, but a special brand of insane only possessed by the Brits. A former British special ops guy I occasionally work with once told me a story about the first Iraq war, where they gave up searching for a lost squad when the pilot bounced the C-130 off a sand dune - at night. There is no such thing as too close to the ground to a British pilot. If they're not getting dust in their eyes, they're not flying. Mad props.

Heck, I have done that hundreds of times at night at as low as 200' AGL and going 480 to 540 fps on Terrain Following Radar flying F-111s. During the front shot in the video it looks like he is getting between 25 and 50 feet for a minute, that is really low. Requires concentration and smoothness but not really that hard to do. The F-111 had a 72 foot wing span and it would get within 40 feet horizontally to obstacles. I personally never went down the Grand Canyon but there were people who did... resulting in new rules that prohibited flight below the canyon rim without permission. That was OK there were some great canyons on the Green River and around lake Powell, too. Once hit Mach 1.15 at about 100 feet trying to catch someone once... in the Range in Nevada. Came over a ridge and slipped over 1.0 going down the back side without even noticing it... Not a good technique; the other aircraft could see where the shock wave hit the ground... not exactly stealthy.

Sure looks like southern Jordan to me. I don't know what kind of military cooperation exists between France and Jordan, but Jordan looks EXACTLY like that.
There are spots in the Negev in Israel that are similar, but they aren't very big. The video makes it hard to tell if they are flying a long way, or just circling around a smaller cluster of sandstone cliffs.
Amazing.
