Star Wars The Force Unleashed For iPhone Hands-On
Posted by Jason Chen at 12:09 PM on September 30, 2008
We first saw the Force Unleashed iPhone game back at E3, and since then not a whole lot has changed. You still control Darth Vader's apprentice by drawing shapes on the screen to correspond with force powers or actions, which is quite suitable for the iPhone, but not as satisfying as it would be to actually draw lightsaber strikes or even swing around the phone like an idiot. Nevertheless, it's really polished and has luscious 2D backgrounds that your PS1/Dreamcast-era guy runs across. Worth $US9.99 (AU: $12.99) if you're a fan of Star Wars, lightsabers, or drawing shapes with your finger. [iTunes]

@diabolusunknownTheSecond: Wow. The pricing scheme completely annihilates the DS and PSP. /relativity

@diabolusunknownTheSecond: Makes sense. You get 20 dollars less worth of game than the PSP version. /fact

@diabolusunknownTheSecond: Methinks my point was postulated with a heavier hue of subtlety than what can be seen by some eyes in the dark of night...
I was merely pointing out that less money of course will equate to less game (relativity, get it?), so direct comparisons between an iPhone app and a full blown handheld game aren't really applicable here. Judge it for what it is, an inexpensive, more casually oriented, unique take on the popular game franchise.
Can you dig it?

I'd rather not turn my $60 frustration and disappointment in to a $70 frustration and disappointment.
I'm so tired of saying to my wife with a big sigh, "It had -so- much potential."

to be more specific the iphone version is like the modern version of an old lucas arts scummvm type game. ie: The Dig. the backgrounds mostly look hand painted and don't move and the music is really cheesy. But instead of point and click adventuring you slash and make gestures with your finger. the major con of this game is that just as you are finally getting the hang of it and learn all the force powers, the game is suddenly over.

You mean you X don't like pushing O button combos in ∆ situations where you X shouldn't O need to?

the psp version is the best version of the force unleashed. the 360 / ps3 version sucks friggin jar-jar ass. typical lucas destruction of star wars. BUT, i have to say, although the iphone version is way too short, it was surprisingly enjoyable! if it was $4.99 it would be worth it that's for sure.

I forgot to mention that I got the game for free. There is a method to hack any app store app for free (:

seems to be the same whirly motion to kill every guy in the game. how hard can that be?

@diabolusunknownTheSecond:
Ok, so then compare it to something of equal value. Flash based games.
I played it and I thought it was horrible for $10. I've spent $10/$15 on plent of games and have gotten 5 times the value.
Glad I didn't waste my money on this.
Another good example of Craptastic XCode.

I think its great that developers are taking advantage of the unique control scheme possibilities on the iPhone/iPod Touch. Sure you may be more used to a D-pad and buttons, and it may offer a more traditional means of controlling your character, but that is why you have a PSP or DS.
I say keep the touch-controlled apps coming. It is interesting to see what they come up with.
