Star Trek's Enterprise Boldly Went 42 Years Ago Today
Posted by Kit Eaton at 7:30 PM on September 8, 2008
Star Trek fans will be tickled to know that the good ol' starship Enterprise first took flight on network TV on September 8th 1966, and split infinitives became OK. Actually, aspects of the show have become such cultural items that even non-sci-fi fans know the thrilling soundtrack, the iconic hull of NCC-1701 zipping into warp, Kirk, Spock, Scotty, McCoy, Uhura, Sulu and Chekov, polystyrene alien worlds, and the inevitable death of red-sweatered crewmen. Who hasn't switched on their mobile (or flipped it open... old Motorola StarTacs were the best) and muttered "beam me up, Scotty"? All that began 42 years ago, a number that'll please a different set of sci-fi fans. Fingers crossed for the upcoming reboot movie. [Wired]

Finally, another reason for all those shut-ins with Lord of the Rings elf ear modifications to come out in public and proudly show their now socially relevant "Vulcan" ears with out being laughed at.

What exactly are the implications of the meaning of life in years being celebrated as an anniversary?

unfortunately no one ever muttered the sentence "beam me up, Scotty" in the entire old series !, go figure :)

@xenoastro: It happened, we just can't find evidence due to a change in temporal continuity. Perhaps Kirk should have punched that Nazi, but who can blame him.

@xenoastro: Ya, any true Trekkie/Trekker would know that and cry blasphemy when others say they heard that exact phrase from Star Trek.

Among the highlights (for me) of Season 1 is the use of a middle initial other than "T." for Kirk, that Vulcans have a second internal eyelid, and Kirk had a brother named Sam who was a biologist.

@xenoastro: You're right. But: grab passing strangers and ask them if they've heard of "beam me up, scotty!" and I bet you 99% will have.

ARTHUR: It's at times like this, when I'm trapped in an Vogan airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in deep space, that I really wish I had listened to what my mother told me when I was young.
FORD: Why? What did she tell you?
ARTHUR: I don't know, I didn't listen!

Cary Grant never said "Judy, Judy, Judy," either. And Humphrey Bogart never said "Play it again, Sam."

42 Years! Not an insignificant number.
Splitting infinitives is just fine in English. The only reason that rule exists is because the Classicists wanted to make English a more refined language like Latin where it is impossible to split infinitives.
Feel free to wildly split away!

"beam me up, scotty" is the sci-fi equivalent of "play it again, sam." both phrases were never uttered in the properties they are associated with.

Anyone else remember Shatner's Denny Crane character on Boston Legal opening his flip phone and hearing the communicator noise? Hilarious.
