Sprint's HTC Touch Diamond Groped Ahead of Release by WSJ
Posted by Kit Eaton at 10:30 PM on September 4, 2008
We've been keeping you up to date on the CDMA version of HTC's Touch Diamond, coming soon to Sprint, but the lucky buggers over at the Wall St Journal got their mitts on one ahead of its launch. It's fatness turns out to be 15mm in size, partly due to that 1,350 mAh battery good for 4.2 hours of talk time. It comes with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional Edition with a Sprint-customised TouchFLO interface plus a bunch of extras like Dataviz's Documents to Go Suite, Opera browser, a YouTube app and it works with Sprint TV and the Sprint Music Store. There's also 4GB of internal memory, a 3.2-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth A2DP. The price is now set at US$250, apparently, with 2-year contract, and it's now due mid-September. I had the P3600 and to be honest, it had a lousy battery life. I had to charge it mid-day.
Now I have the P3700 (Touch Diamond) - and after the official ROM update, I'm quite happy with it. Good size. I probably won't change to the lager battery.
GPS works fine (bought maps from TomTom, installed TomTom7), I even use the 3D TouchFLO surface - it's fast & responsive.

@lldsandsll: I had almost the same hookup with them, but I switched to ATT last month, even with EDGE i'm still happier with my iPhone than I ever was with the HTC or the morons @ spring toll free numbers. And I'm not at all an apple fanboy, I wouldn't switch to a Mac unless there was a gun at my head, but WinMo phones are shit.

YES!!! FINALLY! I've been waiting years for a sprint phone worth buying!
With that said, I know it's sprint and blah blah blah, but for loyalty I get unlimited net, text, free roaming, and 1000 anytime minutes for $32 a month after tax. Does that explain me better?

after owning the HTC titan for almost year it is almost impossible to be excited about new HTC products, that thing was one disaster followed by another. Right now it sits a complete brick on my desk after the charger broke off on the motherboard. After half the keys stopped working, a light leak spot on the screen, continuous dropped calls, 2 hour battery life, faulty GPS that didn't work most of the time... I could go on, and considering that its running wm6.1 I really don't understand the fuss about it.

@lldsandsll: I know it looks bad, but i've been through every smart phone platform imaginable in the last 3 years and Apple is the only one to get it right so far, I talked crap about the iPhone from the day it came out until the day I got one, but after a month's use I still can't put it down or have any of the idiotic issues WinMo or symbian phones gave me

Well according to all the POP we are getting at work it's supposed to be a sept. 4 launch date but I just don't see that happening. Sprint is starting to give the hottest new phones to one rep in each store so that someone will know a little something about the devices before they launch. They've done the instinct, the RAZR VE20, the 800w, and now the diamond. I'm shooting to get the Touch pro. So go bug the store personnel about the diamond as our advocate is supposed to get their's this week :-) The Mogul is end of life as of 7/9/08, so the touch pro should be soon to follow.

I wonder how much it would be for SERO users already on contract? My Sprint Touch is SOLID after the 6.1 upgrade, so I'm not so sure I need to switch hardware so soon.

"it is almost impossible to be excited about new HTC products"
OK, no you are completely right, at no time does technology ever become more refined, fine tuned or improved upon.
While we are on the subject, you'll want to stay away Macs cause I hear that their "128K" model was really slow.
LOL
Aint no thang, more HTC Touch Diamonds for the rest of us!

I had this encounter with a friend the other day.Its not much, but is indicative of the state of blind euphoria many iphone converts exist in.
My friend and I had not seen each other in a few months and one day recently we met. He is normally a pretty upbeat character but today he was beaming more than ususal about his recent iphone purchase.
He spoke to me in breathless excitement telling me about this app and that app and how it was the best phone ever! (They were RSS feeds of his fav. sports teams).
I told him I was happy he was happy...
He looked at me and cynically asked what I could possibly find wrong with the iphone.
I hadn't even got through my speech about the carrier being the first complaint, on top of the lack of reliable 3g connectivity when he cut me off and told me that it was still the best phone ever.
He supported his statement by telling me how intuitive it was. To this end he informed me that the other day it had frozen and wouldn't make a call. "All he had to do" he said was go into the Apple store where the smug tech informed him to perform the intuitive " turn it off and on again" routine before making his call(s).
He was all grins and I didn't even try to touch on the fact that such a routine is A. not acceptable from a phone that is supposed to be Christ in cellular phone form and B. is similar to what many of us in the smartphone/pda phone world have had to deal with regularly.
But of course in his giddy state he would not hear anything other than that the iphone is perfect and magical.
OK...perfect and magical, but still malfunctioning with the rest of us...so not really perfect and not really magical.
I know the venomous fanboys will decend to try tell me why they are sooo much better than I am...and that resistance is futile and Apple saves a million babies for every App store sale.
BUT...back in reality the fact is that the iphone has its share of issues same as the rest of products out there.
When you boil it down to that cold hard fact, the premium that you pay for the "fashion statement" that is iphone on top of the outrageous 3g surcharge and lack of carrier choice seems a lot less worth it.
When the iphone issues are factored in, the real reason to buy the iphone is to be a fashionista. NOT necessarily because its "SUPERIOR TECHNOLOGY". lol...
It seems probable that the fanboys have concluded this for themselves and are now protesting a bit too much.
and... go get! go get the counter argument....goood fanboy...good boy! have a cookie!
On point, the HTC Touch Diamond looks promising, get rid of the red backing or at least offer it in black as well. Throw in the recent firmware tweaks that have demo'd in the recent Touch Pro. previews and you gots yourself some spiritual creamyness!

WAY TOO MUCH HATING GOING ON HERE!
I usually don't actually comment on these things, bc they are inevitably fruitless endevours in trying to get in the last word.
BUT!
I cannot stand by anymore.
I can only look at this from my perspective so I will:
Fact: Sprint has excellent, cheap (relatively) 3g networks that have great reception.
I have happily tethered my q to my laptop and gotten upwards of 1000kb/s.
Fact: WM has its share of issues (As does the iphone) but nothing I have seen or heard makes it a POS OS. In fact there are several 3rd party software tweaks that have made my Q operate at speeds that I would not have thought possible till I used them.
Conclusion:
Sprint is a good, but underrated carrier dogged by the Apple fanboys who enjoy feeling smug about themselves (Que South Park smelling own farts sequence).
MW is perfectly sound platform that offers lots of free and low cost 3rd party apps. and does not deserve a lot of the bad rap that it gets.
Apple is an ingenius company that has set out to rule the world one iphone at a time. Is the iphone a quality piece of hardware and software (really more about software) yes. But it doesn't mean that everything else is a pos.
The point here is...don't be hating!
