Sprint Instinct vs. iPhone: Revenge of the 3G (Guess Who Still Wins?)
Posted by Matt Buchanan at 10:00 AM on September 5, 2008
Back when Sprint's US$100 million shot to the iPhone's nuts kicked off, the Instinct had two big things the iPhone didn't: 3G and GPS. Now, the iPhone's got both of those, making the Instinct a non-contender, right? Not in Instinct vs. iPhone, 3G Redux. We won't spoil it for you, but guess who wins by Sprint's count with a bigger 3G network, turn-by-turn directions, and sprinkles. Yes, sprinkles. [Sprint]

Instinct, look at the thing, complete iPhone rip off. It doesn't have an app store. It's ugly and the UI sucks. Sure, we would all love turn by turn directions. But nothing beats safari or the music player in the iPhone. I think people should just give up and get over it. The iPhone is king and you are the plebs. I sold mobiles for 5 years and nothing has come close to the usefulness I have found in the iPhone.

@ab3 Sprint's 3G network is bigger and many times faster than at&ts while at&ts overall network including 2G is bigger. at&t's 3G network coverage cant touch Sprint's. Sprint's entire network is 3G almost where as at&t is still rolling theres out it will be at least a few years before they can match the coverage and longer before they match the speed. Sprint's current network is the fastest in the US and when they roll out WiMax in Chicago, New York, and Houston I think they will be even faster

Well, until you throw in international and then the Instinct's 3G coverage is dwarfed by the iPhone.
What gets me is that they would bother competing with the iPhone. The Instinct is a decent phone, let it compete on it's on merits and don't compare it with the iPhone because without question the iPhone is superior to every other phone in several areas. Not every area and there are good merits to a lot of other products and they are superior solutions for a lot of people but when you start to compare your products side by side you are going to have to cede major points to the iPhone and that never looks good.

@DiscoDapper: Don't you know it's not popular to say good things about Sprint!!!
The funny thing is that the one thing I have to say about Sprint is this, for me "It just works.™"
I have no problem with them, my Mogul may be be ugly and the interface might not be "easy" enough for some, but the 6.1 upgrade has cut down on the bugs BIG TIME and it does EVERYTHING I want it to, when I want it to. I thought about switching to the iPhone, but I have a good thing going and I'm glad I resisted the thing that glitters.

All I can say is my wife's Instinct does not crash, has GREAT GPS, and works lovely (except for the crappy web browser).
I would say at this point it's a much better PHONE that rolled out smoothly. It also doesn't have the arrogant fanboy base which pretty much kills the iPhone for me, as shiny as that screen may be.
I still use an HTC 6700 which is on it's last legs, but WILL last until Android rolls out, FTW!

@DiscoDapper: No. HTC released the official 6.1 for Mogul last month. It saved the phone, I had had enough with wm6.
As far as homebrews an ROM cooking, I can't take too many risks with my phone. I use it for work and only use legit apps like WiFiRouter (turns the phone into a Wifi hotspot), FTP apps, and the bundled MS software. I have to admit the interface isn't intuitive but it's a damn workhorse, which allows me to work from home 2-3 days a week.
The network hasn't let me down in the last four years, and for the 3 years prior I've traveled ALOT in the U.S. and Sprint's network has always worked for me.
In the end I had no GOOD reason to switch.

2: I own the 3G iPhone... so not only do I work for a company who contracts sprint and work the technical side of things I own the competitor in which is smokin... the 3G iPhone is just simply awesome, but the damn instinct honestly still has it beat as far as speed and coverage... maybe onces AT&T gets there heads out of their asses and gives us a reliable 3G network I can say something diff, but until now I can't...

@dtmoore555 - It's not by any stretch of the imagination a case of "get their heads out of their asses and fix the network" to improve 3G coverage. I work in wireless carrier network deployment and I can tell you that upgrading these networks and extending coverage are extremely time consuming, expensive and difficult. Just getting a city zoning/building permit to build or upgrade ONE tower can take anywhere from 3 to 12 months or even longer for problem sites. Now imagine having to do that across the country even in remote places to achieve seamless coverage. Don't hold your breath for any of the carriers. They move in fits and spurts as best as they can, some efficiently some, not so, and I can say this as I've worked for pretty much all of them, currently AT&T and T-Mobile mostly. Sprint got a hell of a head start, which is why they have a good network.

Ahem...the Instinct's UG makes no mention of synchronizing with the Mac. None. Download the PDF for yourself. I haven't installed the software, but one of the best parts about the iPhone is that it is a logical extension of your own computing environment. The Instinct, on the other hand, seems as if it's going to require a lot of fiddling before it will sync.
Mark/Space is probably working on a "Missing Sync for the Instinct" now, but I intend to wait for an Android Sprint phone because I know that two weeks after it comes out there will be a third-party application which will do what the Mac's native sync function does with the iPhone.
Sprint, you can't sell a product like the Instinct and compare it to the iPhone without it performing like the iPhone!
And I'm a stockholder.

OK.. So I am on Sprint. Never had a problem with the network, phones, billing or CS. Maybe I am a lucky one, maybe I am technical enough to figure things out for myself.
With that said, yes without a doubt every carrier has issues with whatever they put out there. Where it is with a device, network, CS, billing or whatever. This includes AT&T, T-Mobile or whoever. Sprint has had some bad luck due to mis-management and the previous CEO really screwed things up for the company but making bad decsions and not fixing things where they really needed to be fixed.. Thus the reason why he was booted and has left a bad taste in lots of people mouths because of the imcompitance on management.
But remember folks, the only reason why AT&T is where they are now is due to Dan Hesse which brought AT&T out of the shit whole it was once in. And he is now with Sprint. Kicking ass and taking names. The problem is that the general public does not see this because of Sprint's past.
The iPhone can not be compared to any other phone out there.... period. It is a completly different animal. Yes carriers can blurt out "our phone can do this and the iPhone can't".. Who gives a crap. In the end its all about what the consumer wants and what the product has to offer. Right now that is the iPhone.
But in the end there are other great phones out there that have things to offer too. Some people can't stand Apple (me included), others WinMo deivces. i for one like WinMo, yes it is not simplistic as people have said, but what does a simplistic device say about the person that uses it?
All I am saying is ever carrier has its up side and down side. Some carriers have better deivces, services, network ( in certian areas) than the others. Make your choice where it best fits you and move on. Lokk at the good and bad of everything, and quite being errogant snots about who is better.

This just reminded me of how crazy it was for Apple to go exclusive with one of the lesser powered mobile networks. It's like they have this thing for being the "little guy with cool stuff". Don't they realize that people are ready for them to take the market by storm and crush everybody else? Why do they (seemingly) instinctively hold themselves back?
Anyways, very clever of Sprint to take a shot at the iPhone in the middle of iPhone's 3G issues. Good timing - might sell some units even.

CDMA is not dying out, and with WiMAx and Sprint looking to start a joint venture with the top wireless provider in Korea (which is CDMA- and has one of the most advanced networks in the world) to provide new headsets and improved technology, they can only improve. This ad only points out that Sprint's 3G network is more ubiquitous than ATT's. It does absolutely nothing to set the actual phones apart from each other. It is almost as if they were admitting that the Instinct (as a phone) pales in comparison to the iPhone, but it will work in more remote places. For the majority of cell phone users, the size of the network is irrelevant. I don't care if ATT doesn't have service in BFE, because I will never go there. They have awesome service in Denver, which is where I am 98% of the time. Also, frequent business travelers typically go to major metropolitan areas where ATT has just as good as service as Sprint (and their 3G network is a little faster). If you often have big business meetings or live in Defiance, IA (population 200), then you would be better off going with Sprint. The majority of users will pick the superior phone that has faster 3G speeds in the areas that they actually are most of the time. I think the sales numbers are a testament to this.

@justinpe: I think what countrydevil was trying to imply is that most apple fans are snobby/smug people and would say "oh apple doesn't have to spend so much money blah blah blah" when obviously they have spent as much if not more than sprint.I own the instinct and i can assure you the 3g is way fast,i can purchase a song and have it downloaded to my phone in the matter of a minute. If the iphone was on such a fast and reliable network their truly would be limited phones who could stand up to it,but as i say-whats the point of having a $100,000 car if you have a 1/4 of gas in the tank, and $10 in your pocket.Instinct is faster, less expensive to own and theres no need to think your poo doesn't stink if you buy one.Once the browser issues are fixed it'll be a really good contender. :)

@TonyBravo:
I have a friend with an Instinct and I can assure you that ATT's 3G speeds are slightly faster than Sprint's. I can also assure you that my friend has buyer's remorse and he wishes he would have bought an iPhone 3G. Who really needs to buy music over their cell network anyway? I have 1200 songs on my iPhone. Also, if I really really really need to buy a new song on the go, I can do it over wifi, which the Instinct doesn't have. BTW, wifi is much faster than either of Sprint or ATTs 3G speeds.
The Instinct may have a few advantages, but that does not make it better for a majority of people (how many Instincts has Sprint sold?). The iPhone 3G is somewhere around 4 million now.
Does your Instinct have a guitar tuner? What about console quality games? How about the ability to stream your entire music collection from your computer over edge, 3G or wifi to your phone? What about the ability to play any song on demand, for free (who needs to buy a song when you can listen for free?) Also, I have AIM, MSN messenger, ICQ and any other instant messaging service available in one easy-to-use app. The list goes on, but I think you get the idea.
I'll agree that the Instinct is a great device with a lot of functionality, but it will never come close to touching the iPhone. For the two or three advantages that it has, the iPhone has hundreds with the app store alone, not to mention the more responsive touch screen, multi touch, bigger screen, iTunes support, etc etc etc.

Apple didn't go with 'the little guy'. They went with GSM technology, which allowed them to sell their device in 200+ countries worldwide.
If Apple wanted to go with the little guy, the iPhone would be on Verizon or Sprint, limited to CDMA networks (North America and Korea, basically).
So, how many Instincts have been sold in Russia? Europe? China? India? Hate to reiterate a cliche, but you aren't the center of the universe, America.

@justinpe: Well spoken my friend. The people here seem to get wrapped up in little details and fail to see the big picture.

I literally just created an account to respond to this article. Here goes....
Our company, located about a mile from Sprint's headquarters, is a Sprint customer. I recently began using an iPhone 3G as a "test unit" to see if we might go to AT&T.
I also recently tested an Instinct. Unfortunately for Sprint, I used the iPhone first. The Instinct is, to put it mildly, an under-performer. The phone's interface is poorly implemented. For instance, I asked five people at random (non iPhone users) to make a call on the Instinct. In all cases, it took each of them between 30-90 seconds to figure it out. Once you see the little dedicated phone icon button, it goes faster, but it's still far from intuitive.
It does have MMS and Video Recording that the iPhone is oddly lacking. The browser, as noted above, is bad. It's worse than the browser on any phone I've used (Treo, Windows Mobile, Crackberry). It had difficulty rendering most of the web sites I tried, save for those that had a pre-loaded bookmark. I think Sprint/Samsung worked with those sites to have a compatible mobile version. And what's the use of better 3G coverage if you can't use a decent web browser?
For those who think me an iPhone fanboy, let me say it has a few glaring flaws that keep me from recommending it for business users. First, the push mail does not work when you're connected to WiFi. Re-read that sentence again. What's the point of push if it is disabled automatically by WiFi?!
Second, the iPhone's Exchange Calendar integration is severely lacking compared to other ActiveSync phones. The events on my calendar were all "scheduled" by me. So, if I delete an appointment on the iPhone, I get an email saying "I" just "Declined" an appointment. Another flaw is that there is no ability to set "private" appointments from the iPhone (nor a way to confirm they are private). Plus, there is no way to add users to a meeting on the go. A major omission.
Third, the iPhone Battery sucks. If you turn off 3G, bluetooth and WiFi AND you don't use it as an iPod AND you only make/receive a few calls AND you don't use manual sync email you MIGHT get 24 hours out of it. Plan on having a charger everywhere you go (Office, Car, Home, Plane).
At the end of the day, I'd refer Sprint users to the HTC phones. While they're "clunkier" than an iPhone, they do work well, offer a number of software titles and have a decent browser. They're nowhere near as slick as the iPhone, but they do work well.
But, if you really want an iPhone and you understand AT&T's coverage and costs, get the iPhone. It is a great phone, an amazing iPod (AKA iPod Touch) and the best phone-based web browser out there.

Ok heres the deal. Anyone who hasnt actually owned an Instinct and an iPhone 3g have no valid arguements. I have owned both. I had the Instinct on a 30 day trial and returned it to get the iPhone 3G. Instinct has the worst browser of all time, but its really fast..lol. Its voice command features and GPS turn by turn destroy most apps on iPhone. The coverage is amazing, not one dropped call in four weeks. (full 3G or whatever they have everywhere i went too) But without an apps store theres no future IMO. Got to an insticnt forum and read how frustrated they are. At least we have apps to play with when our phone cant dial out..lol. But seriously I miss the turn by turn voice GPS and the voice command features of Insticnt.

<---- Not an instinct or jesus/iphone owner... But I can say the iphone wins hands down... this so called largest 3g network that sprint has, really sucks when you force your customers to use crippled browsers... that hiccup and pause for 10-20 seconds at a time.... The average person isn't traveling much because gas is so expensive, so who cares how large the network is, as long as it works in major cities right? I have a Treo 755p and Sprints 3g networks is awesome only when I tether my lappy via bluetooth.
