I've bought a couple of cameras from overseas and, while always knowing I may be charged GST, never have. A few years ago now I landed my Minolta 7 for ~$AUD800 all up, when the best I could find locally was $1700. I don't pretend there will always be such a difference, but there are substantial savings to be had. Bought the international warranty, but never had to use it.

Sure, the Australian equivalent of US pricing is AUD$3700 and Sony wants AUD$4499 here, but that’s not factoring in the 10% GST you’d pay for importing it, taking it to AUD$4070, plus shipping of up to $80, making it $4150. Add in the fact you will probably get screwed on warranty, it’s actually not that much cheaper to buy it overseas.
