Solenoid Steel Band Makes Me Want to Go to Brazil and Dance
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 1:33 PM on September 29, 2008
A music aficionado/engineering genius has created this wonderful musical piece using just electromagnetic solenoids--devices that convert electricity into linear motion--placed next to different objects around the office, and a computer control program. The result is so good that it makes me want to drink caipirinhas, dance samba, or move to Rio do Janeiro. But since I just moved to New York and it's 11:30PM already, I will just do myself a caipirinha and watch the episode 1 season 2 of Californication.
How to do a perfect caipirinha
Ingredients
• Cachaça (brazilian sugar cane liquor)
• Cane sugar
• Limes
• Finely crushed ice
Instructions
• Get a glass, preferably one with a wide diameter and short (but I made them large myself)
• Cut one full lime into eight sections.
• Put the lime in the glass and cover with sugar (you can add more sugar later if it's too strong for you)
• With a wood pestle (you can also use a metal one or any other instrument) mash the limes with the sugar until the juice and the sugar create a syrup.
• Add the crushed ice until you top the glass (I crush it by hand, in a cloth)
• Fill with cachaça to the top.
• Stirred well with a spoon until the whole thing is mixed (if you have a cocktail steel glass, you can also shake it).
• Taste and see if you need more sugar (add and mix again if needed).
Enjoy one of the most delicious drinks in the world, perfect for a hot sunday (which it is, here in my apartment in New York).

I love it, someone should make a set you can buy, and you install a card in your computer, and the solenoids are wireless and battery powered and you can set them up anywhere within 30 feet of the computer. I would play with that all night.

Now, that looks like just about the ONLY worthwhile activity to undertake in an office!
caipirinha is my house cocktail down here in SW France - Cachaça is not often available, so I buy 10 bottles at a time when I see it. People LOVE it when they come round...

David Byrne just did this recently with a *whole building*. Better yet, he hooked it up to a keyboard so people could play their own tunes live:

In the recipe, it's lemons - not limes. I suppose the confusion comes from Brazilian lemons being green (Brazilian limes are yellow!), so Americans mistake them for limes.

The platform he/she was using is called arduino. It's being controlled by Max/MSP. You can buy all of the pieces commercially, and probably get the Max patches if you track down the whoever created the video. I doubt that you could buy this as a kit though, simply because it was a strictly DIY enterprise probably using some open source bits and pieces.

caipirinha (pronounced "Kai" as in Cobra Kai from Karate Kid, "Puh" as in put, "ring" as in... uh... ring, and "ah", but not the open up and say "ahhh" kind of ah, just the quick little ah like "ah choo" as in what you say when you sneeze. Kai-puh-ring-a. But in Portueguese the "ng" is closer to the "n" sound than the ng. I digress. Caipirinha is awesome any day of the week - and you can make them with lemon instead of lime as well - both an amazing drink. The Cachaça is only made in Brazil, and the crap you can get here in the states is, well... crap. Pronounced "kah" as in how they say "car" in Boston, "shasa" as in Mount Shasta without the "t" (or the Mount). But it's also called "Pinga" (pronounced just like it looks) - and that's easier to remember. So... If you ever know anyone going to Brazil, what are you going to ask them to bring back for you? A good bottle of Pinga!
