Smart Posters Use Cool Technology to Give You More Marketdrone Material
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 9:38 PM on September 3, 2008
Always ahead of the curve, Japanese communication companies are deploying smart posters for a test drive in a Chiba shopping mall. The posters will use Near Field Communication technology to send information like images, music and movie clips to mobile phones over the air, all with no need to establish any kind of pairing.
People just have to hold the telephone within spitting distance of the poster, and start downloading. Then spit, too. In future chapters, the posters will form an evil network to take over Japan and create a giant robot that will force everyone to watch stupid ads and trailers until their brains explode. Couldn't we use this in theaters to send constant nags to shut your goddamn phone off before you take a coca~cola bath?
I bought extra, I'm ready.

Why couldn't they do something good with this, like having it in movie theatres so you can see trailers of movies before you watch them?

People just have to hold the telephone within spitting distance of the poster, and start downloading.
And why would I want to do that? Honestly, I think some advertisers are so deluded that they actually think they are giving you something that you want.

@jdunns4: I despise all these anal spellcheck assholes on here, but let me bust out my Tone Loc tape from 6th Grade and its actually Cheeba Cheeba. Would be cool if it were the focus of an entire shopping mall, especially in Japan.

I imagine it would be something like Minority Report.
"John Anderton, you could use a Guinness!"

If I walk past an advertisement and it makes my phone ring or start playing a song I will never buy that product and I will complain to the mall management.

This sounds like a bad, and very annoying idea.
