Siemens Oven Lifts Your Roast Like a Death Star Hangar Lift
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 2:30 AM on September 2, 2008
The Siemens HB 78P570 oven looks like any other oven until you notice that it has no door, which is precisely when it starts to open automatically from its bottom: The glossy black food platform slides down mechanically until it is at the same level as your kitchen top. Sounds a bit crazy, but it's extremely convenient to put your suckling pig stuffed with chicken wings, then easily paint it with BBQ honey sauce until it's done. [More IFA 2008 Coverage]

The oven is missing the usual rack with the trays that is common to all ovens. For demonstration purposes only, i bet.

I've actually seen one such ovens in a real kitchen and have wanted one for a long time (yes, they're not new), if not for instant wife veto...

Wouldn't that door design make less energy efficient?

This looks more like a microwave oven then a conventional oven. If true it would clear up a lot of the questions...

@00000000: Gah, get a life.
@scoobydoo: Thats why they also sell the negative gravity energy generator as an optional add-on to make sure that kind of thing doesn't happen.

@scoobydoo: Exactly. Totally impractical. Plus, what happens when you want to use multiple racks? Does the bottom cook evenly sitting on the floor of the oven like that?

I can already see the boiling hot grease come dripping out of the bottom.

@comfortablesofa: Considering heat rises, I'm pretty sure this would be a more efficient design than a standard side-door model. However, practicality must be balanced as well... this seems like a case of form over function.

Gaggenau came out with one of these about a year and a half ago:

@comfortablesofa: Actually I think it makes it more efficient, as when you open the door not all the heat escapes, as it does in an conventional oven. Consider that the heat rises to the top inside the oven (then circulates and warms the entire oven) opening the bottom should / would result in less heat loss than opening the front of the oven.
If you follow the siemens-appliances.ie link that Drezio supplied and read the instruction booklet, you'll notice that on pages 18 and following there are socalled "accessory mounts" (the two little knobs) that you put two poles on and can have multiple racks. I don't think Siemens is that stupid to ship an oven without rack capability.

This is not new. This kind of oven has already existed for at least one or two years, even more.
The only drawback I see is that the place below the oven should always be free from anything.

@The Magnificen7: I'd like to know what exactly was going through the head of the designer of this impractical piece of crap. Seriously... no oven shelves so you can only cook one thing at a time, the risk of boiling hot grease spilling out as scoobydoo says... and I bet it's a pain in the arse to clean.

@Kid-A: You can't cook more than one thing in the oven, so that's why you get 2 of them. People don't normally just throw their turkey directly on the rack, they put it in a pan that catches all the grease. Cleaning it would be awkward though.
The only thing that makes me think this is a good idea at all is that when the timer is done the bottom can lower down automatically and the oven can shut off, so you don't have to be around and take whatever it is out of the oven.

For my money the best oven is the double-oven we bought at Ikea. It's 6' tall and has two complete ovens (and the top one has a convection mode).
I grant you, that as a serious cook, I still only use both ovens about twice a year. But nothing beats watching the Thanksgiving turkey cook on the bottom while the side-dishess cook by themselves on the top, and everything comes out done at the same time. Priceless.

It may not be practical, but speaking as someone who has to put on oven mitts and heave that 25 pound turkey out of the oven and up to the range top to baste it 10 times, its a great idea.

Agreed, this is nice for cooling off food. If all I cooked were frozen pizzas and cakes this would be great.
When you cook roasts, and you want to baste, you quickly open and close the oven to stop a large loss of heat. It doesn't seem to open/close as fast as you would want it to. Has anyone modded theirs?

To those that see the problem of boiling grease pouring out the bottom of this oven: Is that really an issue with your cooking?
The only way I could see enough grease to be in the oven and come pouring out is if you are deep frying in the oven (which I've never done) and you overfill your container. I'm no chef, but the most I've had spill on the oven floor wasn't enough to run anywhere.

Couple of issues with the comments so far ...
Heat does not rise. Hot air rises. Heat radiates in all directions.
The heat capacity of air is very small. So opening the oven from
the bottom is unlikely to have any effect on the retention of heat.
Second: the reason "boiling hot grease" does not come "spilling
out" is for the precise same reason boiling hot grease does not
come spilling out of the oven you already own; food is conventionally
cooked in a pan or other container rather than being left on the
floor of the oven.

Ziron
Posted 3:12 AM 2/9/08
Thats a pretty cool design... It would probably be more energy efficient as all of the heat would stay in the top of the oven as compared to traditional ovens where when you open the side all of the heat escapes through the top.

What about safety issues? Is there a way to get a burning casserole out of the oven quickly or spray a fire extinguisher into it without having to wait for the motor to drop down the lift? Or a way to open the oven if the power goes out?

Would suck if the lift malfunctioned leaving your turkey stuck inside until you can get it serviced. Of course I imagine there might be a manual release for the lift? Maybe? I'm too lazy to follow the link and read the instructions.
