Software
SDK for Sony xPeria X1 Phone Launched, Doesn't Cost a Penny
Posted by Kit Eaton at 7:36 PM on September 3, 2008
Sony's just come up with the software development kit for the xPeria X1, designed to let programmers create new "panel" apps for the phone's funky one-touch panel interface that sits on top of its Windows Mobile 6.1 OS. The idea is to create stuff that will "meet the consumer's demand for a rich, individualised multimedia experience on their phone"—everything from search engines to social networking apps, all easy-access through the panels, or so says Sony anyway. If you're keen to get to grips with making software for this phone, you'll be able to get hold of the SDK for free here. Otherwise, check out a video of the panel interface at the Sony link. Press release below. [Sony]
London, UK -- 3 September 2008-- Sony Ericsson today published its Software Developer Kit (SDK) for Xperia™ X1 and invited developers and content creators to capitalise on the opportunities offered by developing mobile content for the phone. Whether it is music, photography, email or instant messaging, gaming, social networking or video applications, developers can now create a host of unique multi-media entertainment and content for the Xperia™ X1 for consumers to enjoy.
Xperia™ X1 brings a totally new experience to mobile phone users by introducing nine easy-to-use, interactive panels which sit on the touch screen interface of the phone.
Developers can use the Windows Mobile SDK, free of charge, to produce a wide variety of panels to meet the consumer's demand for a rich, individualised multimedia experience on their phone. Users of the Xperia™ X1 will be spoilt for choice as they personalise their handset with panel applications to suit their mood and lifestyle. Whether it is a search engine, advanced calendar or social networking application, music or film catalogue, sports or news related content, the panels enable you to access any information - quickly and directly - with a simple tap on the 3" super high resolution touch screen.
"Sony Ericsson is committed to providing its customers with rich, open content environment to make their mobile experience more enjoyable and entertaining," said Rikko Sakaguchi , CVP and Head of Creation and Development at Sony Ericsson. Food for thought for me at least. I was waiting to ditch the iphone and get the Android, but having seen the Android model (which looks cack and a bit Jimmy Hill) I think I may just add Sony into the mix, they do make cracking kit.

This is freaking retarded... how many SDK's are out now? Apple, Instinct, Android, Microsoft, Blackberry, and now this? Do companies think that just because you make a touch screen phone with an SDK, people will buy your product?

I don't like that triangle button crap on the phone, but I can't deny the awesomeness of SE.

It's a very nice peice of kit... but again, are we just going to see companies jumping belatedly into spaced the iPhone has made it's own? Is the skin on WinMo really worthy of a proprietary SDK - is this just the WinMo SDK with it's own daft skin? If it's the former, is the platform going forward in a major way or is this just a side dabble disguised as a genuine response to the threat of Apple & the App store? Or should I just rtfa?
That video was an unfriendly flavour of WMV (are there any other kinds?)

The problem with having an SDK for one phone's version of someone else's OS is that it's an SDK for one phone's version of someone else's OS. It's a nice addition for developers who want to do something for an app that doesn't take much time, but that's about it.
On the other hand, I wouldn't get all Apply because of it. It's not like the focus of the iPhone OS is to let 3rd parties make up an icon on your phone -- which is pretty much what this Sony thing does, right?

@cobaltage: Sony did that with Palm OS back in the day as well.
You were welcome to develop for 'em, no SDKs no help, no nothing, and it was all for Sony's Clie stuff, not the OS in general.

@cobaltage: I think this will initially start out with the X1, then move on the all of the later phones in the Xperia line.

@Joseph: No they think that if there are a lot of applications and software for their phones people will buy their product.
@jbang: Oh here we again with Companies being "threatened" by another fruit company that barely has any experience in their field. Why the hell are you getting mad when a company releases an SDK to let people create apps for their phone?

Kudos to Kit... the discipline it must have taken not to mention the iPhone for a phone so obviously wishing it were one is palpable.

The iphone doesn't OWN anything. It's a phone with an OS. Sure it is the first of the next generation of mobile phones, but it doesn't own the next generation, that the other companies should stop developing their own products. Iphone is also based on Mach kernel OS and has a SDK. Why cant a WinMo based device series have its own SDK?
stop calling the iphone a threat, its a market competition. iphone is certainly revolutionary, but the app-store isnt. And there is no certainty that the iphone will be the best of the next generation.

@takashimiike Ultimate and @strider_mt2k: That's true. I'd forgotten about the Clie as well. And I always wanted a Clie, but it was just too expensive (and import only after a short while).

@takashimiike Ultimate: Yeah thats true, but from the two examples we've seen of Apps; Apples already released Apps, and Androids developer contest, people are generally making the same programs and just spreading them across platforms. By this time next year, you'll have a code nightmare trying to keep up with 10 software versions. As a developer, that turns me off especially when this phone has no market share to even warrant developing for.

By the time this phone is out Android devices will be gradually rolling out and WM7 devices will be looming on the near horizon. Sure is purty, but I'll pass this late in the WM6 lifecycle.

@Ron-Mexico: Being that the core of the X1 is HTC hardware, I'd wager the folks over at [forum.xda-developers.com] will have WM7 running on it as soon as WM7 is available, probably before it's official too.
