Question of the Day: Do You Listen to an MP3 Player While Working Out?
Posted by Sean Fallon at 7:00 AM on September 3, 2008
The news about new iPods coming out on September 9th combined with observations during my daily visits to the gym have got me wondering about how many of you use an MP3 player while working out. Based on these observations alone, it seems that somewhere around 40 to 50% percent of gym goers rely on an MP3 player to pump them up. It is a good thing too because most studies show that listening to music you enjoy while working out improves results. So, do you use an MP3 player during your workout? How do you use it? Do you exercise at all?

Working out? What the sh*t?
Real men have beer bellies!
No, but seriously... the only exercise I do is swimming 2 times a week.
And I'm kinda interested in testing an mp3 player that works underwater... now, if only I can find a big, famous gadget blog to send me one for free...

I listen to music while working out for sure.
And by working out, I mean walking to work.
And by walking to work, I mean walking to and from the subway.
And by walking to and from the subway I mean stopping for coffee and a donut during each leg.
And by leg, I mean the distance from the escalator to the curb.
And by donut I mean a gigantic glazed bow-tie.
And by music I mean podcasts.
And by podcasts I mean the imaginary conversations I have with famous people in my head.

while I enjoy nothing more than watchng an Ipod get a good sweatbath, and am glad OTHER people take iPods to the gym for that reason, I stick to my Sandisks. I retired an older 1gb m230 to become my gym mp3 player. I don't care if it gets beat up, it holds enough music to run a marathon or two, and it's light as hell.
I've used an Ipod shuffle - I like the little clippy thing, but i'll be damned if I have to use iTumes for ANYTHING...crap-ass annoying software.

Zune, Armband.
Doesn't get in the way of lifting as Ipranal suggests. I have had maybe one excercise where it did get in the way, but I don't do that anymore (can't even think of it).
Routines I do: Bench, Incline Bench, Tricep pushdown, flys, dips, pullups/lat pulldown, row, military press, curls, reverse curls, forearm curls, squats, leg extension, leg curls, crunch (sheesh, stop bragging). Maybe an oddball excersice thrown in, but it stays put just fine and doesn't get hit by cables or weights.
Now, running/jumping does cause a problem. Band twists/slides a little bit and needs re-adjusting, which would be an issue if I ran or jumped.

Oh, and the best music for working out is 80s electronic, I'm all about Pet Shop Boys and Erasure. And I really have to resist singing along sometimes... You may catch me doing it once in a while. But I do find that particular music will pick me up when I've got no energy left, and I can alternate pace with the changing songs to make it more interesting.

I love the nike+ ipod thing, so I have a nano dedicated specifically to working out, and the armband thing for it. But I'm a girl, and our workout clothes often have no pockets, so I need it.
I actually really feel motivated to run with the nike+ thing, I set goals for myself and like to be told how many calories I burn. I don't use it with nike shoes though, since my feet require ugly motion control running shoes, but I use a little pocket clip on top of my shoe for the sensor and it works great.
That being said, I'm totally lazy and haven't run in a month, and prior to that it had been a few months. Thanks giz for making me confess to how out of shape I am, I think you guilted me into a run today.

@OMG! Ponies!: A person after my own heart! I'm a fan of shitty pop/techno for cardio and metal for weights too.
I have a black 8GB 3rd gen nano that I wear on my arm in a Belkin Sport Armband. That earbud cord storage thing is great for cutting down on that annoying rattle some earbuds get when the cords flap around. I'm not a fan of the iPod earbuds, so I replaced them with a pair of Sennheiser CX300s. The iPod earbuds don't fit in my ears very well.

I use Jamiroquai, Coheed & Cambria, Danger Radio, and others to pump me up when working. I used to use the bluetooth adaptor for my working out, but have gone back to headphones. What I find interesting in itself is the fact that 16% of polled participants find exercise not worth their time. A better question would be to ask how many people who are tech savvy actually exercise at least once a week.

Yup, I bought a refurbed Shuffle months ago for a big price break (before the full-price Shuffles had their price cut). I had been using my two-year old Nano, but it was too much of a hassle putting it into an armband then taking it out again for daily use. So, I much prefer my Shuffle as my designated Workout playlist iPod.

1st Gen iPod Shuffle on a clip on my shorts. I use some Sony in-ear buds so they aren't falling out and run the cable under my shirt.
I don't really have any certain type of music on it, pretty much a little bit of everything (even miles davis, yea!) Usually on the treadmill I try to listen to something in 2/2 time to help set a good rhythm or a fast 4/4. On the the weights I listen to whatever mood I am in, anything from Massive Attack to Pantera.
Sometimes I really rely on the music to drive me and sometimes I'm just in an elevator. I think the main idea is isolation.
While were here... my one pet peeve is people who have their frickin' cell phones with them on the floor. Can anyone tell me why you can't be away from your blanket for 1 hour while you exercise?

I go the full on corporate route: nike + ipod nano and a special nike + armband. Yeah, it's dicky but it holds real good. True story: my first nike armband delaminated (probably due to the combination of high-intensity sweat and over-sized biceps) and I tried to take it back to the giant corporate retail sports outlet, which refused to return it without a receipt even though I was a sucker and bought it using their privacy-infringing special shopper card, which I thought meant they tracked my purchases 'cause this is like the future with computers and stuff. In a fit of righteous consumer rage I went in and "replaced" it myself.
Normally I distrust large corporate entities, but I really appreciate the self-service aspect that the de-humanization provides me.

My gym has a headphone jack hookup on each elliptical, bike, and treadmill with your own individual screen that hooks into your MP3 player (I own an iPod, so that's all I know that works) that'll let you watch whatever the heck you want off your player on a larger screen in front of you, with volume controls on the machine too. They also have basic cable hooked up there too. It's amazing how fast a workout goes when watching Flight of the Conchords...

I bought a broken screen Sansa E260 from ebay to replace the cracked faceplate on my E250.
It now has become my gym player, like a 4gb shuffle. It took a lot of fiddling and a reflash in the beginning to get it to go playing music, without being able to see the menus (for some reason it's really easy to go into radio mode), and sometimes it loses the setting somehow and I have to push keys at random until I get back to the mp3s, but generaly it works well enough.
And of course, it cost me only ten dollars so I don't care if it gets beaten up.

Zune 30gb w/out an armband. My gym has several flat panels in the cardio area that broadcast audio on various FM frequencies, so I can either listen to my music or tune into one of those.
I mainly use mine on cardio days when I can stick it on the treadmill or elliptical. Jostling around a hard drive based player on my arm makes me a bit nervous. Especially b/c I bought the Zune as a manufacturer refurb.

Lifting weights is the closest I get to meditating. For that I prefer not to be distracted by recognizable music or TV. I don't mind a little 70s or techno babbling in the bg, but I otherwise keep my mind on the excercises.
for riding my bike on the streets I need to be attentive to traffic, so listening to music on the bike is out of the question.
It's also hard to do on the street- listening to music on the street requires massive volume so not only do I not enjoy the music, I would ruin my hearing in the process. No thanks, all the way around.

I love my Sansa Clip at the gym. I had a 30GB iPod video with armband and it was just too bulky to use at the gym. I was so close to buying an iPod Shuffle when I saw a sale on the Sandisk Sansa Clip at Newegg and bought that instead. I LOVE it! It was $20 cheaper than a Shuffle and has more features. 2GB is plenty of music for the gym, and with the Sansa I can select what album or playlist I want. Plus I can tune it to the FM frequency the TVs in the gym are on and listen to them. I've now convinced three friends to buy the same model for the gym and nobody has any regrets.

iPhone on an armband, with lots of jungle and drum n' bass and generally electronicy sounding things when I run, so that I can pretend I am the Bionic Man, except everybody looks at me weird when I start air-playing the keyboard part to "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger." If I turn up the volume loud enough, I can almost drown out the sound of my own wheezing and hacking and cursing, too. Afterwards, I even log onto Gyminee's iPhone client to log progress. And thanks to your sister site Lifehacker, I have my membership card loaded on my phone too. Yeah, I know, geeky gym guy... but at least I don't have a bitchin' Camaro and rock out to Master of Puppets.

i use a Samsung P2. the bluetooth headphones really come in handy on the treadmill and free weights(no cord in the way). i also like that i have my phone connected to the cardo headphones so i dont have to get either thing out of my backpack(ride a motorcycle there)

@ArrogantAce: Same here, for the same reasons. The P2 is perfect for working out, although I'm more of a rower than a lifter.

i definitely use my ipod for working out, especially when i'm just jogging around the neighborhood. hearing some of my favorite up beat music really gets me pumped and motivated to keep up with the beat.
that is, when i actually go jogging.
it's really an annual event haha

At the gym: I'll use my iPod when I'm on the treadmill. Never used it while weight training though.
At home: I'll put the iPod in my iHome and listen.

I'm a runner and find it difficult sometimes to keep going without the ipod. I was on a 10 mile run this past weekend when my shuffle died at mile 2. it was rought to keep going for an hour with no tunes but an ipod still strapped to my head.
Its supposed to be unsafe to wear an ipod while running outside, but meh. You can keep up a faster pace when you don't hear yourself breathe.

I listen to various elitist liberal radio podcasts or audio books while running. Music is too easy for me to ignore, but Ira Glass or Robert Krulwich? They're interesting enough that I focus on them rather than the pain.
Music when I'm at work, though.

I've been using a Samsung Yepp on either on a lanyard or in a pocket for 5 years. Its small, light, and its taken a beating and come back for more.

I have an ipod but i work out by biking or swimming.
both of which i've deemed unsafe with the addition of an ipod.

I actually cannot workout if I don't have an mp3 player.
and ever since I got the iphone it has been a bless, I can be texting, making calls and listen to my mp3 at the same time.
I also sing out loud, I bet it bothers people near me lol

I use my Verizon VX8550 (Chocolate 2) with my Jaybird http://www.jaybirdgear.com/ bluetooth head set. It's great you, don't have wires to get tangled in and and you can use an armband, put the phone in your pocket or even just let it chill under the bench while you work out.

For long, slow efforts indoors on treadmills or stationary bikes I really need the music to keep me from going nuts. Sometimes I even watch a movie on my iPhone. But when training outdoors I never use my iPod anymore. The scenery is enough to keep my mind occupied and I really don't want to get hit by a car.
So far I haven't been using an MP3 player on my swims, but I have considered it. Does anyone have any opinions on waterproof MP3 players or even waterproof iPod cases that are suitable for swimming?

I use my iPod Nano when I run, but not when I lift weights. In fact, I think that lifting weights with headphones on is downright dangerous, especially if there are other meatheads around who love to drop (read: throw) weights after their last grunt. If you don't hear that last "AAAARRRRGH", it could mean a broken foot at my gym. Of course, running on a street with headphones is probably more dangerous, but honestly I'd rather be hit by a car than have to deal with the roided out, phonebook-tearing morons at my gym.
Of course, this is all hypothetical since I don't think I've been to my gym since around last March. Ugh.

Right now I rely on Dexter: Season 2. Each episode is about an hour long so it's perfect for the elyptical. I downloaded the episodes to my iPhone.

I use a Rio Cali 128 MB with a 2 GB SSD card in it. Love it. Paid $50 for it 5 or 6 years ago.

i haven't jumped on the ipod bandwagon bc my bb curve has been more than up to the task - especially when i started creating playlists. i use earbuds at the gym, but use the speakers when i cycle outside since it's not technically legal to ride with headphones.
it's fun for me to listen to my own choice of music at the gym -- but it's a plus to not have to listen to the grunting and panting of the gym rats around me. :p

I use a Zune 30 in a Belkin acrylic case and Maximo headphones. I know that my setup is a little big but that acrylic case really protects my Zune from my clutzyness. Plus I figure you there to work out so I guess I can handle a huge mp3 player as well, heh. I can also watch movies & podcasts while I am doing cardio because the tv's at my gym suck.

I use my Sony Ericsson Walkman phone while I lift.
Put it in my pocket, run the wire under my shirt, and let Disturbed urge me to reach my goals.
