Playing Your PSP at Work is a Bad Idea, Especially When You Drive a City Bus
Posted by Sean Fallon at 9:40 AM on September 26, 2008
A bus driver in Honolulu, Hawaii was suspended without pay recently after he was discovered playing video games while driving. Photos taken by a concerned passenger caught him red handed with his PSP, and she complained that he would play at stoplights and "with two hands... at times, while he was driving in traffic." As baffling as all this is, I am even more surprised that he wasn't fired on the spot. And why didn't anyone speak up with a "hey dumbass, keep your eyes on the road before you kill us all?" It's Hawaii brudda. Go with the flow and keep your shorts on. It's not like anyone in Hawaii is in any rush to get somewhere anyway.

not only that, but the Bus drivers here in Hawaii get paid more than I do as a Graphic Designer with a 4 yr degree from a major university (not UH).
I don't get to play games at work either.

It could have been worse. He could have tazed a guy who was threatening to jump from a second-story ledge.
Sorry, but this bus driver does not get the Dumb Government Employee Of The Week Award.

No worse than the L.A. bus drivers that are I experience regularly reading the newspaper while driving, or the MetroRail engineer in the big crash a couple of weeks ago that reportedly ws test-messaging and so missed the stop signal.

You mean this is not safe to do? So Arnold wasn't wrong when he banned texting while driving in California?

Well I mean... it is in Honolulu... an island right? What's he got to make like 8,000 lefts a day. I bet that gets kind of monotonous. I'm not condoning it, I'm just saying...

@Giz: "hey dumbass, keep your eyes on the road before you kill us all"
The people inside the bus would probably be fine. Much more likely to just plow the bus into several people outside the bus and kill them...

San Francisco bus drivers have hit pedestrians, injuring or killing them, and they're simply moved to a different bus rout. The wonders of Unions work for the betterment of us all.

I just watched a bus driver play with his iPod while driving. Not the thing you should be doing while operating a moving vehicle.

I once had to take a small prop-plane in Nicaragua (seats about about 10). Mid-flight I look up and the pilot is reading the sports section of the newspaper....

I bus daily in Honolulu. Today my quarters got jammed in the slot. The stupid driver told me to get out a key and fix the jam! He didn't bother to help at all. Typical low life fool.

Hey! That's (was) the regular bus driver for my route! True Story! I was wondering where he was yesterday. The noob that replaced him had the wrong route posted (there is an upper and lower version of that particular route), in the front and I had to wait another 25 minutes becasue I thought either my bus was early or was late. But seriously I think he was a nice guy. I always see him talking to the regulars. Well, that probably was not safe either!

@Cynt: That busdrive needs to be fired on the spot.
Tired of people who hold themselves above tradespeople because they have a college degree. And yes a busdriver is a tradesperson.
The busdriver gets more for a few good reasons.
That's because if something bad happens when a bus driver is working people may very well die.
If something bad happens when a graphic designer is working he may have to "go back to the drawing board".
There is a lot of demand for busdrivers, not as much for graphic designers. Only a small portion of designers get the top wage.
I have a bachelors degree from a 4 year university too. I also work a professional job at a different university. But while I was attending college college I used to drive a truck, for a portable toilet company no less. Gave me a sense of proportion and humility. Most professional drivers handle those large vehicles better than you handle your car.
Again, that driver should have been fired on the spot.
