Photoshop CS4 Dropping On Sept. 23?
Posted by Gizmodo US Edition at 1:45 PM on September 12, 2008
Is Photoshop CS4 coming earlier than predicted? A screengrab of NAPP Newswire shows that something is about to hit on Sept. 23... and that it's something to do with Adobe's Creative Suite 4. How disappointing would it be if whatever it is that's supposed to be "brilliant" turned out to be like... an ad? [-Thanks mrquintano2u!]

@MichaelScrip:
Last I heard, it'll be 64-bit only in Windows. Supposedly, OSX will only be getting 32-bit.

Man, I'm still using CS2. Wonder what they'll be adding/updating? Probably not worth the upgrade for me.

New packaging for CS, in 73 different colors, in 9 different combinations of software, and like Apple, they're gunna make it look just like the competition, and cut out features that made it stand out.
Sorry...still bent after the "Let's Suck" event...

Woot woot. Quad core support? :D I'll be swapping over in a heart beat if I can get some 20-25% increase with those sitting cores.

@Darkest Daze: That is what was said, but that was before we Apple demoed SL. While it appears to be 32 and 64-biit on x86, it surely won't support PPC. I think will change their stance and only support Intel and will be 64-bit.

LOL I seriously doubt Adobe would cut their user base in 1/2 by releasing a 64bit ONLY suite of applications.

Will it be worth it? If you call multi-core support and parallel GPU processing worth it...
I'm ALL IN, this is the 1st REAL overhaul of the CS platform in YEARS.

Way to foil the speculation fun. Also, the CS in CS4 stands for "Creative Suite."

To be clear the saving feature, nothing worser then working on a logo then finding out that the save feature is not working. fix print spool bug.
I would have put this in my other post if edit feature was available. come on giz we need edit feature.

Nope, you got it wrong. It's 64-bit and 32-bit on Windows, 32-bit on OSX :p. See this [wwwimages.adobe.com]

WTF?! Ponies!
Posted 9:38 PM 12/9/08
@VakeroRokero: Adobe has a long history of sticking it to Apple users. When OSX first came out, Adobe waited 9 months before releasing Photoshop on it. That alone prevented a lot of people from upgrading.
When Final Cut came out, Adobe scaled back Mac support for Premiere because it viewed Apple as horning in on its territory. Adobe does what it does very well and protects its market share jealously. If that means shipping Mac users a version that is not fully optimized, Adobe will do it.

CS4 is not coming out Sept. 23. It is just a preview event.
they have multiple times you can sign up for to see the preview. I believe it is going to be a webcast.
Adobe had sent out invitations to watch it.

@WTF?! Ponies!:
While I do not disagree with you about Adobe's history of Mac user abuse, from what I have read, the lack of 64-bit CS4 support for Leopard (and beyond) is just about 100% Apple's fault.

well... the jump from CS2 to CS3 was outstanding in my point of view. But you need a pretty fast computer to run CS3 smoothly!
So, do we have to wait for the next generation of computers before we can actually run CS4?
The adobe website points out something brilliant will happen on Sep. 23... Let's wait and see

Dear lord. How long has CS3 been out? I feel like I JUST upgraded last year.
If CS4 is coming out I'm boycotting until CS5. Unless of course my boss pays for it. Need it at home, so I can 'work' from home too, hmmp.

For a lot of jobs, $1000 for CS is cheap. I work for an arch firm as the Graphic Designer and my software needs are a pittance compared to the accountant's, the architects and the CADD peeps.
People that run successful small businesses budget for these things and if they're warranted, have little problem paying for the upgrades.

Talking to an Adobe rep on the phone a few months back he said they keep to a 16 month dev cycle per each version of photoshop. They already have the beta's out for Dreamweaver and Fireworks CS4 so perhaps it will just be a full announcement or more beta's will be released then.
Cant wait to try out Photoshop CS4, its suppose to have like GPU acceleration (finally!)

Vista is truly native 64bit / MacOSX isn't. Mac OSX abandoned carbon where Adobe has worked so they dont have enough time to port for cocoa. Then again Snow leopard is going to bring true 64bit for the mac, stay tuned for CS5

Yeah I do TS for ***** ..... its not out on the 23. There's supposed to be an announcement or something though on the website. I think the official date is sometime in October. I hope so anyway. I don't get trained on it til next week so I would hope that I get more than a week. Ha ha. But I have CS4 the MC at work for eval purposes. Haven't played with it much.

I wonder if brilliant means it'll be AT LEAST HALF THE SIZE then it was in CS3. WTF is Adobe doing? Acrobat is 1.2GB....FEAKING ACROBAT!!!! PDF creation.... 1.2GB!!!!
Even 300MB for Photoshop is too much.
How the hell is Photoshop 300MB and PDF creation = 1.2GB!!!!
AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, soda at 7 in the morning for me is NOT a good idea!!!!

It is interesting to see here how few people even understand what 64bit means.
There is no logic code difference between 32 and 64 bit apps. There is no reason an app could not be set up to run in either mode.
All 64bit means is that the system is capable of addressing memory locations past 4294967295 bytes (3.25-3.5GB of system ram depending on memory hole).
It has NOTHING to do with a program using 64bit values for calculations or color or whatever else you think 64bit does. MQW is the x86 assembly command that has been around for 20 years that means MakeQuadWord (64bit integer). Guess what, you've all had infinite bit systems for years!

@este:
"There is no logic code difference between 32 and 64 bit apps."
That's where you are going to lose most people. Take the 32bit version of SQL compared to it's 64bit counter part. Massive install size difference.
It is possible to code 32 and 64 bit versions differently in order to optimize memory resource handling. Especially when it comes to memory intensive apps.
