PC In a Nintendo Wii Looks as Cool as a Nintendo Wii
Posted by Jesus Diaz at 12:30 AM on September 5, 2008
At last, someone managed the most needed, most anxiously-awaited PC retrofit job there is: putting a PC inside a Nintendo Wii box. Looking into its guts and its back, the Wii PC not very powerful, but it is fully functional and comes with everything you need in a Windows XP box.
AU:Old news...
The computer runs Windows XP SP3 on a Celeron 1.3GHz, Intel 852 chipset, 512MB of RAM, and 40GB hard drive, with wireless access, digital video output, three USB ports, and a fan that he stole out of a F-35 STOVL fighter yet. At least, it sounds like one:

Well, at least we now know why there is a Wii shortage.

What kind of vid card did he put in there? Is it possible that some dude in his basement crammed more juice into a Wii case than Nintendo?

You guys weren't kidding about that fan being loud. The just ruins the entire thing for me. Would not want something that loud near my TV (would def use this as a media-center box).
Also, he has to be able to put more memory in there. WinXP barely runs with 512MB in it. Is space really that tight that he can't fit in 2 1GB sticks into it?
Cool that he did it, but the specs seem way to low for your average Gizmodo user.

It's missing the crazy case mods.

Install linux on it then we'll talk. 512Mb as stated before barely runs windows XP, install any distro it would run perfectly on this

I'm guessing that there is another box in the room, like maybe an HP LH3 or something... I just can't imagine one fan being THAT loud (and I used to have thermaltakes).

Running XP with 512 megs is a painful experience. The memory on my main computer died a few months ago and a 512 meg stick was all I had around as a spare. The 2 days it took for my replacement RAM to arrive were the longest two days ever.
On the other hand, though, I think the PC-Wii would work well with any number of specialized functions. (media computer, specialized *nix box, etc.)

you could basically transplant the system board and everything from a dell studio hybrid into a wii case fairly easily.
and have a much higher spec computer.....

@GumbyX:
I do agree to a point, XP runs fairly well in 512MB, surely I'd hate to run with only that amount, but it still runs pretty smoothly.
I have a Dell with only 384MB of RAM, running XP, runs like a charm, then again, its only for media usage now due to the addition of 3 audio cards.
But like you said, would be nice with 2GB of RAM, perhaps he didn't cause he ran out of money or maybe it would get too hot?
