Palm Treo Pro Finds A US Carrier, Is It AT&T?
Posted by Adrian Covert at 8:36 AM on September 20, 2008
Palm announced in their quarterly call that it had found an unnamed carrier to sell their new Treo Pro, but declined to mention who, specifically, would peddle the $US550 phone (at a potentially subsidised cost). WM Experts seem to think the carrier will be AT&T, which makes enough sense, since AT&T tends to get the big Palm GSM phones first in the US.
Though details on pricing and availability were scant, WM Experts thinks it won't hit until December at the earliest (due to AT&T's leaked roadmap today), and Wired believes the subsidised price that comes along with being locked on the AT&T network will bring it down into the 200-300 US dollar range. So far, however, this is all speculation. [WM Experts via BGR via Gadget Lab]

That clicking you hear is the sound of hundreds of pre-order cancellations.

@ctthoqqua: Actually, I'd rather buy an unsubsidized Treo Pro than deal with AT&T bloatware and obligate myself on a 2-year contract. But to the credit of your point, I am waiting for it to fall below the retail asking price of $549 (interested in $350-400) before doing so. AT&T subsidizing the purchase price of the phone, arguably, will help scoot the price drop from MSRP sooner.

Wow that's super.
Should I be looking to third party developers for things like the ability to see and use a memory card above 2GB?
Because that kind of hokey BS is probably what you should be expecting from the dried up re-packaging re-branding lake bed that is whats left of Palm.
Enjoy! :\

@ctthoqqua: Enjoy your Palm product if it works for you.
Personally I've had it with that company and won't reward their sloth with my business.

@strider_mt2k: Not exactly sure to what you're referring here, the Treo Pro supports 32GB microSDHC cards (which may also mean that it supports unicorns and gryphons, but I digress).
In spite of the illogic of it (it's an unlocked 3G phone-- but its 3G only works on AT&T's network, and it will probably be subsidized by AT&T very soon), I think I'll keep my order in the system just to encourage Palm to follow this exciting new strategy of making black phones.
