Palm Slips OS 2 Date, New Smartphones Due Later in 2009
Posted by Kit Eaton at 9:59 PM on September 22, 2008
Palm's been quietly developing its OS II, and says it'll now be finished by the end of this year, meaning we can expect to see handsets bearing the OS sometime after June 2009. It's another delay to the Linux-based OS, also dubbed Nova, with Palm's CEO originally promising OS II handsets in 2007: current Palms like the Centro use OS 5.4m, also known as 'Garnet' which has its roots in 2006. Bad news for Palm fans, though you could argue the extra development means the OS should be in even better shape to take on the iPhone, BlackBerries and Windows Mobile phones in its marketspace. My Treo 755p will be replaced with either the Touch Pro, or the Touch HD -- just a matter of when they are released.

strider is right.
I used to program a bit for my old Palm III and the subsequent Palm V.
It was fun back then.
But when they sold their development team I thought; WTF?
My Treo is slowly passing away (it started with the phone-part) and I can only hope that the PlecoDict for the iPhone will be out before that thing dies completely.
Still it is kinda hard watching a company make one mistake after another, because its bosses don't do the right thing a renew this company from the bottom up.
I think I'll keep the Treo 650 in a glass show case besides my trusted 1st generation Gameboy.

Not looking good. By that point, Palm could be (even more) irrelevant. HTC looks poised to snatch that Palm base away, RIM will keep their base and Apple should keep chipping away at RIM and WinMo. It will be a very interesting year for the mobile industry.

I guess Palm decided that Access will be doing better things with IT'S Linux-based OS that supports nearly all of the former Palm OS's applications.
Not like Palm can do anything with it any way, they don't even own Garnet anymore.
Considering how Palm has sold off it's best, brightest and most interesting parts over the years, I'm interested to see exactly how much disappointment will be generated over it's latest late lackluster effort.
I mean...YAY! New stuff from Palm!

How do you come to the conclusion, "meaning we can expect to see handsets bearing the OS sometime after June 2009."? I'm just curious, since I didn't read any official mention of that. What if they're working on the handsets now, concurrent with the OS?

Well, I may have to nurse my 750P along until the new ones come out. That bites. I like upgrading simply for the sake of upgrading, and now I may have to wait and delay gratification. And even then I might not like what I see.
But if the alternative is WinMo 6x, then I will grab my ankles for a while longer. Just say "No" to WinMo.

Garnet's roots go back way earlier than 2006. Sucker's close to six years old, by my accounting!

I thought Garnet had its roots in 2002 or so.

What a shame. I remember my first Palm device and how great it was and easy to use (a Handspring!). It would be great if this was something to get excited about.

@weatherman
"No va" means "doesn't go" the same way "Notable" means "No Table".

@strider_mt2k: Like who is left at Palm besides Jeff and the executive management? An executive there is named Way Ting...yes Palm, we are waiting...

ooh, new design.
Anyway, I like the original Palm os from the 90's. If they can keep the ease of use from that, and get the power and glitz of a modern hand-held device (aka iPhone), then I'll be interested. But... I dunno if we'll see that. Honestly after Android and iPhone, any other product will have to really stand out, I think.
